Eleven patients (nine males, two females), 9-14 years of age, received adjunctive therapy with remacemide in an open ascending-dose study at two residential centers in the United Kingdom. Children taking enzyme-inducing drugs were given remacemide twice daily, starting at approximately 4 mg/kg per day and doubling the dose at two weekly intervals to a target dose of approximately 16 mg/kg per day. METHODS: In a 5-month period, prospective data were collected on patients undergoing conscious sedation for interventional radiology procedures (n = 594). Adverse events were categorized as respiratory, sedative, or major adverse events. Respiratory adverse events were those that required oral airway placement, ambu bag, or jaw thrust. The new platinum compound oxaliplatin (Eloxatin) appears to have activity, either alone or in combination, as both first- and second-line therapy for advanced colorectal cancer. Unlike other platinum derivatives, it is not associated with significant nephrotoxicity or ototoxicity. To investigate the safety of rapid infusion of alendronate, we used alendronate therapy for 11 breast cancer patients with bone metastasis. Of the 11 patients, only 1 had hypercalcemia and the remaining 10 normocalcemia. Rapid infusion of alendronate consisted of an administration of alendronate 10 mg diluted in 100 ml saline in 30 minutes, and was repeated every two weeks. OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of stripping of membranes in initiation of labor and to study its effect on maternal and perinatal morbidity.
METHOD: One-hundred primigravidae with certain gestational dates were randomized at 38 weeks gestation to either receive stripping of membranes or only gentle cervical examination. Cervical swabs were taken before pelvic examination at 38 weeks and again at the onset of labor. Placental membranes were sent for bacteriological study after delivery in all patients.
