The regulation by melatonin of hypothalamic-pituitary events in the ewe to advance seasonal oestrous activity, with no undesirable effects upon fertility, and its induction of those seasonal responses associated with short days indicates an essential role for melatonin in controlled-breeding programs in major sheep-producing countries. The development of suitable controlled-release systems to provide a choice of practical methods of melatonin delivery under field conditions is discussed as also are geographical and breed factors in controlled breeding with melatonin.

Seasonality of the reproductive cycle in sheep is a general phenomenon for mid-latitude breeds. The proximal part (breeding season) and also partially distal part (end of gestation and beginning of lactation) of this cycle is controlled by photoperiod, whatever the form of light regimens. To define the dose response of apnea and breathing to morphine we studied 12 fetuses at 116-141 days of gestation using our window technique. We instrumented the fetus to record electrocortical activity (ECoG), eye movements (EOG), diaphragmatic activity (integral of EMGdi), heart rate, carotid blood pressure, and amniotic pressure. Rumination activity was recorded in sheep during a period of 3 h. The amount of rumination occurring in 30 min following the intravenous injection of an alpha 1 blocking drug (prazosin, 0.1 mg/kg) and an alpha 2 blocking drug (idazoxan, 0.1 mg/kg) was reduced compared with control days when saline was given. The control of phosphorus excretion in sheep has been examined by constructing a kinetic model that contains a mechanistic set of connections between blood and gastrointestinal tract. A total of 648 blood serum samples from sheep and 65 aborted fetuses were subject to serologic, resp., morphologic studies. It was found via the immunodiffusion test that 33.4 per cent of the investigated sera from nonmiscarrying sheep and 53.06 per cent from sheep that aborted were positive for toxoplasmosis antibodies. The relationship between ceruloplasmin, a metalloenzyme with oxidase activity, and copper was investigated in cattle and sheep. The oxidase activity of ceruloplasmin correlated closely with the serum or plasma copper concentrations in cattle. The respective correlation coefficients were 0.83 and 0.60. Taenia saginata cysticercosis was experimentally produced in 4 Soay sheep, 1 four-horned sheep and 1 Texel sheep by oral administration of eggs of the parasite. Some of these sheep were given dexamethasone therapy. The evolution of T. saginata cysticercosis in this host is characterised by a rapid immune reaction so that by 6 weeks after infection almost all the cysts were dead. There were indications that the dexamethasone therapy may have assisted establishment of the infection and to some extent, postponed the process of degeneration.

Sheep were immunized with antigens extracted from third-instar larvae of L. cuprina. This procedure produced substantial titres of circulating antibody as measured by solid-phase radioimmunoassay or immunodiffusion or by both techniques. The relative central nervous system and cardiovascular toxicity of lidocaine was compared in adult, newborn, and fetal sheep during continuous infusion of lidocaine into the jugular vein at the rate of 2 mg x kg-1 x min-1. The epidemiology of trypanosomiasis in a tsetse-infested range area of Kenya was studied for 2 years in various breeds of sheep and goats. Direct and indirect Coombs tests were performed on six experimentally chronic copper poisoned sheep and on two control sheep. Initially, all sheep were direct Coombs test negative and five of six experimental and one of two control sheep were indirect Coombs test positive. During intoxication, five of six experimental sheep became direct Coombs test positive while controls remained negative. Eluates, prepared from the red cells of three experimental sheep, sensitized normal sheep red cells, as measured by the indirect Coombs test. Similarly prepared eluates from control sheep were negative.
