PURPOSE: To identify MRI findings for injuries to periarticular soft tissue structures that were related to isolated greater tubercle fracture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 16 patients (mean age: 53.8, range 30-71 yrs) were enrolled and diagnosed with isolated greater tubercle (GT) fracture with CT and MRI and underwent shoulder arthroscopy from September 2009 to April 2019. Two musculoskeletal radiologists were blinded to the patient history and arthroscopic surgical findings and reviewed patient's CT and MRI. Fracture displacement, fracture center, and presence of bony Bankart lesion with Hill sa

Children involved in high-speed vehicle collision could be particularly exposed to severe injuries when adult restraints are used. We report a case where adult 3-point restraint used without booster seat was responsible for severe thoracic injury resulting in complete shoulder and clavicle dislocation, occipito-atloidal dislocation, and complete disruption of right common carotid artery in a 7-year-old boy. Misplacement of the adult shoulder harness at the base of the neck could be directly responsible for these lethal injuries, which could probably be avoided by concomitant use of a booster s

In brief Complex tests and procedures brief are not usually needed to identify shoulder injuries that are common in clinical practice: rotator cuff injuries, shoulder instability, and impingement syndrome, among others. The history can differentiate causes of pain or instability with questions about symptom patterns. Performing targeted physical tests such as the drop-arm test and the apprehension test establishes presence and degree of impingement or instability. A standard radiographic series that includes rotation, axillary, and supraspinatus outlet views can identify presence of associated…

Overhead activities require the shoulder to be exposed to and sustain repetitive loads. The segmental activation of the body's links, known … h as weakness and/or tightness in the leg, pelvic core, or scapular musculature can lead to overuse shoulder injuries. These injuries can be prevented and maladaptations can be detected with a thorough understanding of biomechanics of the kinetic chain as it relates to overhead activity.

BACKGROUND: Internal fixation of one or both bones is the recommended treatment for floating shoulder injuries (ipsilateral fractures of the scapula and clavicle). Perceived risks of nonoperative treatment include abduction weakness, decreased range of motion, chronic pain, malunion, and nonunion. None of these problems, however, have been confirmed by clinical studies. The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze the clinical and radiographic results of nonoperative treatment of floating shoulder injuries.
METHODS: Twenty patients with a floating shoulder injury were treated with e…

Shoulder injuries resulting from acute trauma are frequent. Minimally invasive (MIS) procedures such as arthroscopy are increasingly being used instead of traditional open approaches for several surgical purposes. When it comes to arthroscopy evaluations and treatments, the shoulder ranks second most often. Various shoulder pathologies, including rotator cuff pathology, subacromial impingement, acromioclavicular joint abnormalities, and more, may now be evaluated and treated with the use of shoulder arthroscopy. Shoulder arthroscopy has several benefits over open surgery, such as less comorbid…

The long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) is a common source of pathology. The biceps-labral complex (BLC) is the collective anatomic and clinical features shared by the biceps tendon and the superior labrum. LHBT pathology can be caused by inflammation, instability, or trauma. Numerous tests can be performed to determine the existence of biceps tendon and superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP) lesions; however, many of these tests do not have high sensitivity and specificity, which limit their clinical utility. Because it is difficult to diagnose both LHBT and SLAP pathology, management

Superior labral anterior posterior (SLAP) tears are an abnormality of the superior labrum usually centered on the attachment of the long head of the biceps tendon. Tears are commonly caused by repetitive overhead motion or fall on an outstretched arm. SLAP lesions can lead to shoulder pain and instability. Clinical diagnosis is difficult thus imaging plays a key diagnostic role. The normal anatomic variability of the capsulolabral complex can make SLAP lesions a diagnostic challenge. Concurrent shoulder injuries are often present including rotator cuff tears, cystic changes or marrow edema in …

AIM: We aimed to identify patterns and mechanisms of injury situations in men's professional handball by means of video match analysis.
METHODS: Moderate and severe injuries (absence of >7 days) sustained in competition in one of six seasons (2010 to 2013 and 2014 to 2017) in men's professional handball were prospectively analysed with a newly developed standardised observation form. Season 2013 to 2014 was excluded because of missing video material.
RESULTS: 580 injuries were identified: 298 (51.4%) contact injuries, 151 (26.0%) indirect contact injuries and 131 (22.6%) non-contact injuries

Brachial plexus birth injuries (BPBIs) are typically traction type injuries to the newborn that occur during the delivery process. Although the incidence of these injuries has overall decreased from 1.5 to around 0.9 per 1000 live births in the United States over the past 2 decades, these injuries remain common, with incidence holding fairly steady from 2008 to 2014. Shoulder dystocia is the strongest identified risk factor, imparting a 100-fold greater risk. The newborn's shoulder is caught behind the mother's pubic bone, and traction performed on the child during delivery results in injury t

Simultaneous bilateral anterior shoulder dislocations are extremely rare and typically result from high-energy trauma or seizure activity. Due to their unusual presentation, diagnosis and associated injuries may be missed without thorough assessment and advanced imaging. Here, we present a case report with an associated narrative review of the relevant medical literature. In addition, we propose a treatment algorithm to optimise management of this cohort. A 44-year-old male presented to the emergency department with bilateral shoulder pain and loss of function after lifting a 100 kg weight ove

A proximal humerus fracture typically occurs when an elderly woman falls directly onto her shoulder or on her outstretched arm. Local pain in the shoulder and immobility of the upper arm raise a suspicion of a significant injury. Other bone and tendon injuries in the shoulder region as well as dislocation of the shoulder should be considered on differential diagnosis. Diagnosis is achieved by plain X-ray. Most fractures can be treated conservatively. Consultation with an orthopedist is needed, if there are several fracture fragments with extensive dislocation.

INTRODUCTION: This study delves into the management of acromion fractures and acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocations-orthopedic injuries with significant implications for shoulder function. Despite their infrequency, these injuries present challenges due to potential persistent pain and functional limitations. Current treatment strategies span from conservative measures to surgical interventions, yet there exists a notable gap in comprehensive data on specific surgical approaches.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a compelling case involving a 38-year-old male athlete who sought medical att

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is uncommon in routine practice of a paediatrician and injuries arising out of CPR are extremely rare especially in those involving children. A 41-year-old senior resident of paediatrics performed CPR on a young boy, following which he complained of pain in the left shoulder with restriction of all movements and flexion of the left elbow. MRI of the left shoulder revealed tear of the long head of biceps brachii, soft tissue oedema in left deltoid muscle and mild effusion in left glenohumeral joint with extension into subcapsularis bursa. He was treated conse

The superior suspensory complex of the shoulder (SSCS) is a ring shaped structure composed of bones and soft tissues that play a fundamental role in the stability of the shoulder joint. Isolated injuries of the SSCS are relatively common, but injuries that affect 3 components are extremely unusual. We present a triple injury of the SSCS in a 26 year old patient with a Neer type ii clavicular fracture, a Kuhn type iii acromion fracture and an Ogawa type i coracoid fracture. An open reduction and stabilization of the clavicle was performed with 2 Kirschner nails. The acromial fracture was synthe

BACKGROUND: Combined posterior and posterior-superior (PPS) injuries (6:30-12:00; right shoulder) have a much higher incidence than isolated superior labral anterior to posterior (SLAP) injuries (11:00-1:00; right shoulder). However, it is unclear how PPS injuries affect glenohumeral (GH) biomechanics and how they should be treated. This study evaluated if (1) PPS injuries alter GH kinematics and joint characteristics, (2) standard repair techniques restore GH kinematics and contact characteristics toward their intact state, and (3) there are differences between repair techniques.
METHODS: Te
