Validation of an objective scar pigmentation measurement by using a spectrocolorimeter.

Scar pigmentation changes throughout its maturation process and it is often used as one of the indicators for scar maturation, yet it is often rated subjectively. The purpose of this study was to investigate the application of a commercial spectrocolorimeter to produce a reliable measurement on scar pigmentation. Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) model of color has been adopted in this study for measurement of scar pigmentation 24 patients with hypertrophic scars at different stages of maturation were selected for the study, were inspected by two therapists using the Vancouver sca

Laser treatment of benign melanocytic lesion: a review.

Treatment of pigmented lesions is one of the major challenges of laser and cosmetic practitioners. The most common pigmented lesions that are treated by lasers are melanocytic nevi, ephelides, solar lentigines, and café au lait macules. Melanin absorbs different wavelengths (500-1100 nm); thereby, treatment of various pigmented lesions requires the application of lasers with different wavelengths. Choosing the most appropriate type of laser depends on various factors such as the chromophore and the location of a specific lesion in the skin. In this paper, we aim to review the most efficient la

Molecular characterization of SLC24A5 variants and evaluation of Nitisinone treatment efficacy in a zebrafish model of OCA6.

Skin pigmentation is a highly heterogeneous trait with diverse consequences worldwide. SLC24A5, encoding a potent K+ -dependent Na+ /Ca2+ exchanger, is among the known color-coding genes that participate in melanogenesis by maintaining pH in melanosomes. Deficient SLC24A5 activity results in oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) type 6 in humans. In this study, by utilizing a exome sequencing (ES) approach, we identified two new variants [p. (Gly110Arg) and p. (IIe189Ilefs*1)] of SLC24A5 cosegregating with the OCA phenotype, including nystagmus, strabismus, foveal hypoplasia, albinotic fundus, and vis…

Bee venom stimulates human melanocyte proliferation, melanogenesis, dendricity and migration.

Pigmentation may result from melanocyte proliferation, melanogenesis, migration or increases in dendricity. Recently, it has been reported that secreted phospholipase A(2)(sPLA(2)) known as a component of bee venom (BV), stimulates melanocyte dendricity and pigmentation. BV has been used clinically to control rheumatoid arthritis and to ameliorate pain via its anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive properties. Moreover, after treatment with BV, pigmentation around the injection sites was occasionally observed and the pigmentation lasted a few months. However, no study has been done about the ef

Depigmentation therapy in vitiligo universalis with cryotherapy and 4-hydroxyanisole.

Vitiligo is a disease characterized by the loss of melanocytes, resulting in progressive depigmentation of skin, and areas of normally pigmented skin can be of cosmetic concern. Several options have been tried to remove the pigment and make the skin a more even colour. We present an easy and effective therapeutic procedure based on single-session cryotherapy followed by topical 4-hydroxyanisole (4-HA).

Pigmented melanocytes are protected against ultraviolet-A-induced membrane damage.

The dominant skin pigment melanin is believed to protect human skin against several harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. It is not clear, however, how melanin located inside melanin-producing melanocytes modulates the effect of ultraviolet radiation on melanocytes themselves. We have determined membrane damage in pigmented and unpigmented albino mouse melanocytes after ultraviolet A radiation, which is suspected to induce melanoma. Unpigmented cells were much more susceptible to ultraviolet-A-induced membrane permeability than pigmented cells. Unpigmented cells were also more susceptible

Horizontal and vertical pigment spread into surrounding piebald epidermis and hair follicles after suction blister epidermal grafting.

Following the earlier description of Carnot and Deflandre in 1896, pigment spread phenomenon in mammals was investigated using immunogenetically marked melanocytes (Billingham and Silver, Quart. Rev. Biol. 1960 35: 1-40; Billingham and Silver, Ann. N.Y. Acad. Sci. 1963 100: 348-363). In spite of a number of similar studies on vitiligo lesions, detailed evaluation of pigment spread in piebald lesions has not been reported. To gain further insight into the pigment spread phenomenon in human skin, five piebald patients were studied, on whom suction blister epidermal grafting therapy onto piebald

Perioral pigmentation: what is your diagnosis?

Pigmented spots in the skin and mucosa (lentigines) can be found in various diseases called familial lentiginosis syndromes; Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is one of them. It is characterized by the association of mucocutaneous melanin pigmentation and hamartomatous gastrointestinal polyps. Patients with PJS are at increased risk of intussusception and cancer development (gastrointestinal and non-gastrointestinal tumors). We present a 5-year-old girl with pigmented macules of perioral and perinasal skin, lips, and buccal mucosa and review lentiginoses and the surveillance of PJS.

Effect of Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 on Melanocyte Proliferation in Tissue-Engineered Skin Substitutes.

Burn patients treated with tissue-engineered skin substitutes (TESs) often experience pigmentation irregularities, including hypopigmentation and pigmentation spots. These issues are thought to stem from the reduced presence of melanocytes through dilution during TES manufacturing. To address this, we hypothesized that supplementing epithelial cell cultures-primarily composed of keratinocytes but also containing melanocytes-with Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (FGF-2), a known promoter of melanocyte proliferation, could enhance melanocyte growth. This would potentially increase their numbers in TES

SASH1 interacts with TNKS2 and promotes human melanocyte stem cell maintenance.

Both aging spots (hyperpigmentation) and hair graying (lack of pigmentation) are associated with aging, two seemingly opposite pigmentation phenotypes. It is not clear how they are mechanistically connected. This study investigated the underlying mechanism in a family with an inherited pigmentation disorder. Clinical examinations identified accelerated hair graying and skin dyspigmentation (intermixed hyper and hypopigmentation) in the family members carrying the SASH1 S519N variant. Cell assays indicated that SASH1 promoted stem-like characteristics in human melanocytes, and SASH1 S519N was d

[Is the pigmentation a characteristic sign for chronic venous insufficiency?].

In epidemiological studies pigmentations were declared a decisive criterium of stadium II of chronic venous insufficiency. It is discussed in this work if it is possible as the pigmentation is sometimes absent in advanced stages of chronic venous insufficiency. On the other hand it has got to be considered that there are many other possibilities of pigment building on the legs without chronic venous insufficiency. Pigmentation may be of actinic, endocrine, atrophic or especially of inflammatory origin. These pigmentations cannot be differentiated from those caused by chronic venous insufficien

Expanding the Clinical Application of Fractional Radiofrequency Treatment: Findings on Rhytides, Hyperpigmentation, Rosacea, and Acne Redness.

While radiofrequency has been used medically for decades to treat a wide variety of conditions, its use therapeutically to target conditions affecting the skin is relatively new. With the development of fractional radiofrequency, which allows for the heat energy to be delivered in a more targeted manner through the use of needles as electrodes, this technique is now the preferred medical treatment option for many skin conditions given the reduction in recovery time and fewer number of reported side effects. The current study examined the clinical effectiveness of SmartScan(TM) Nano-Fractional
