Sweat production and localisation of carbonic anhydrase in the equine sweat gland during exercise at two ambient temperatures.

The aim of this investigation was to study sweat production during exercise at 2 ambient temperatures (20 degrees C and 35 degrees C) and the concurrent localisation of carbonic anhydrase (CA) in the sweat gland. Horses develop alkalosis during prolonged exercise and the sweat contains HCO3-. Carbonic anhydrase is therefore of interest since it catalyses the reaction CO2 + H2O<-->HCO3- + H+. Four standardbred trotters performed an exercise test. Skin biopsies were taken from the neck, and sweat rate, blood and skin temperatures were measured. There was a close relationship between sweat rate, …

Heat strain during at-sea helicopter operations and the effect of passive microclimate cooling.

Twelve Navy H-3 helicopter aircrew members were monitored (heart rate, skin and rectal temperatures) in both microclimate cooling (ice) vest … significant (p less than 0.05). Analysis of variance demonstrated significantly lower mean weighted skin temperatures (p less than 0.05) when wearing the ice vest. These data suggest that wearing a protective cooling vest can reduce the heat strain associated with helicopter flight in high heat environments.

Treatment of port-wine stains: analysis.

Port-wine stains (PWS) are bluish red skin stains that are caused by enlarged, ectatic blood vessels in the dermis. Laser treatment of PWS is analyzed from computation of the spatial distribution of heat production by direct absorption of the laser light and subsequent heat conduction. The absorption and scattering caused by oxyhemoglobin, epidermis, and dermis as a function of wavelength are utilized in this analysis. Ideal treatment is defined as coagulating the ectatic blood vessels without irreversible damage to the epidermis and dermis. The analysis shows that a millisecond pulsed, yellow

Cold and L-menthol-induced sensitization in healthy volunteers--a cold hypersensitivity analogue to the heat/capsaicin model.

Topical high-concentration L-menthol is the only established human experimental pain model to study mechanisms underlying cold hyperalgesia. We aimed at investigating the combinatorial effect of cold stimuli and topical L-menthol on cold pain and secondary mechanical hyperalgesia. Analogue to the heat-capsaicin model on skin sensitization, we proposed that cold/menthol enhances or prolong L-menthol-evoked sensitization. Topical 40% L-menthol or vehicle was applied (20 minutes) on the volar forearms of 20 healthy females and males (age, 28.7 ± 0.6 years). Cold stimulation of 5°C for 5 minutes w

Critical Evaluation of Whole-Body Cryostimulation Protocol in Race Horses.

Cold therapy is commonly used to relieve pain and inflammation and to aid in muscle recovery after exercise in human medicine. A number of applications have also been observed in veterinary practice. In this article, a critical evaluation of equine protocol applied with a new commercial concept of equine whole-body cryostimulation (WBC) was made. With this new concept of WBC, the protocol usually utilized for relieving pain and discomfort in humans has been extended to horses. The investigations described herein focus on the reduction of horse skin temperature when applying human WBC protocols…

Regional heat loss in resting man during immersion in 25.2 degrees C water.

Five male subjects having a wide range of relative body fat, 9.2-20.2%, were studied during total body immersion in water at 25.2 degrees C. The regional surface area of each subject was calculated from anthropometric data utilizing a segmental geometric model. Skin temperatures (Tsk) and regional skin heat loss were measured prior to and during 30 min immersion at 13 sites. During immersion, mean Tsk was 25.9 degrees C and remained significantly higher than the water temperature. A measurable temperature gradient for heat flow was observed from all body segments. Segimental temperature in wat…

Impaired thermoregulation in adults with growth hormone deficiency during heat exposure and exercise.

OBJECTIVE: It has recently been shown that patients with growth hormone deficiency have a reduced sweating capacity. We hypothesize that reduced sweating might affect thermoregulation in growth hormone deficiency patients. In the present study we have examined thermoregulation in growth hormone deficiency patients. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: Six adult growth hormone deficiency patients and six matched controls were exposed to a 90-minute heat period (40 degrees C). On a second day the subjects exercised for 30 minutes under standardized conditions. MEASUREMENTS: On both occasions changes in GH sec

Postherpetic neuralgia. Are C-nociceptors involved in signalling and maintenance of tactile allodynia?

Under normal conditions acute stimulation and sensitization of polymodal nociceptive C-fibres cause pain and, due to afferent axon reflex activation, a local skin vasodilatation, flare reaction and skin temperature increase. Two questions arise: (i) Do sensitized C-nociceptors signal allodynia in chronic postherpetic neuralgia? (ii) If not, does ongoing peripheral nociceptive C-fibre input maintain a central process that accounts for allodynia? Ten patients with postherpetic neuralgia and tactile allodynia and 10 control subjects were studied using a laser Doppler perfusion monitor. Peripheral…

Using Thermal Imaging to Track Cellulitis.

BACKGROUND: Cellulitis is a common soft tissue infection and a major cause of morbidity. The diagnosis is based almost exclusively on clinical history and physical exam. To improve the diagnosis of cellulitis, we used a thermal camera to track how skin temperature of the affected area changed during a hospital stay for patients with cellulitis. METHODS: We recruited 120 patients admitted with a diagnosis of cellulitis. Daily thermal images of the affected limb were taken. Temperature intensity and area were analyzed from the images. Highest daily body temperature and antibiotics administered …

The effect of humidified heated breathing circuit on core body temperature in perioperative hypothermia during thyroid surgery.

Purpose: During general anesthesia, human body easily reaches a hypothermic state, which is mainly caused by heat redistribution. Most studies suggested that humidified heated breathing circuits (HHBC) have little influence on maintenance of the core temperature during early phase of anesthesia. This study was aimed at examining heat preservation effect with HHBC in case of undergoing surgery with less exposure of surgical fields and short surgical duration. Methods: Patients aged 19 to 70 yr - old, ASA-PS I or II who were scheduled for elective thyroidectomy were assigned and divided to the g

Effect of change in ambient temperature on core temperature during the daytime.

In this study, the hypothesis is tested that continuous increases in ambient temperature (Ta) during daytime would give elevated core and skin temperatures, and consequently better thermal sensation and comfort. Rectal temperature (Tre), skin temperatures and regional dry heat losses at 7 sites were continuously measured for 10 Japanese male subjects in three thermal conditions: cond. 1, stepwise increases in Ta from 26 °C at 9 h00 to 30 °C at 18 h00; cond. 2, steady Ta at 28 °C from 9 h00 to 18 h00 and cond. 3, stepwise decreases in Ta from 30 °C at 9 h00 to 26 °C at 18 h00. Possible mechanisms of hypothermia after inhibition of the median or dorsal raphe nucleus of freely moving rats.

We previously reported that tetrodotoxin (TTX) perfusion into the median raphe nucleus (MRN), which contains the cell bodies of serotonin (5-HT) neurons, induced a considerable body temperature reduction under normal and low ambient temperatures (23 and 5°C, respectively) in freely moving rats but showed no such effect under high ambient temperature (35°C). In the present study, we aimed to determine the mechanism(s) of body temperature reduction after TTX perfusion into the MRN by measuring tail skin temperature (an index of heat loss), heart rate (an index of heat production), and locomotor …
