Exposure to video games: effects on sleep and on post-sleep cognitive abilities. A sistematic review of experimental evidences.

The public opinion is ever more interested and worried about possible effects of exposure to VGs (video games) on human life and well-being. Scientific literature shows several evidences highlighting negative outcomes on behavioural, emotive, cognitive and physical health spheres. All these aspects are intrinsically linked to sleep quality and quantity and to date very few studies directly investigated the effects of videogame (VG) exposure on sleep and post-sleep cognitive status. The aim of the present systematic review is to examine the impact that the exposure to VGs can produce on sleep p

Dynamics of slow wave activity in narcoleptic patients under bed rest conditions.

Following a baseline night recording, 9 narcoleptic subjects and 9 sex- and age-matched control subjects were maintained on 16 h of diurnal sleep deprivation. Thereafter subjects were submitted to a 32 h bed rest protocol in a sound- and light-attenuated room. The EEG was recorded and processed by a Fast Fourier Transform. Narcoleptics did not differ from controls in total sleep time over the whole 32 h, but spent more time sleeping during the daytime (DT). In both groups slow wave activity (SWA) showed an exponential decaying trend during the first night (N1); a similar exponential trend duri

EEG sleep in depression and in remission and the REM sleep response to the cholinergic agonist RS 86.

A comparison of the sleep EEG patterns of patients with a major depressive disorder intraindividually between remitted and depressed state revealed an improvement of parameters of sleep continuity and a tendency for normalization of rapid eye movement (REM) latency and REM density in the former. Additional application of the cholinergic agonist RS 86 prior to sleep did not reveal a heightened sensitivity of the REM sleep system in the remitted sample. Whereas a group of presently ill depressives displayed a drastic reduction of REM latency, results of the remitted patients were comparable to h

The integrative process promoted by EMDR in dissociative disorders: neurobiological mechanisms, psychometric tools, and intervention efficacy on the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dissociative disorders (DDs) are characterized by a discontinuity in the normal integration of consciousness, memory, identity, emotion, perception, bodily representation, motor control, and action. The life-threatening coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been identified as a potentially traumatic event and may produce a wide range of mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, and DD, stemming from pandemic-related events, such as sickness, isolation, losing loved ones, and fear for one's life. In our conceptual analysis, we introduce the contr

Sleep EEG in mice that are deficient in the potassium channel subunit K.v.3.2.

Voltage-gated potassium channels containing the K.v.3.2 subunit are expressed in specific neuronal populations such as thalamocortical neurons and fast spiking GABAergic interneurons of the neocortex and hippocampus. These K(+)-channels play a major role in the regulation of firing properties in these neurons. We investigated whether the K.v.3.2 subunit contributes to the generation of the sleep electroencephalogram (EEG). The EEG of a frontal and occipital derivation of K.v.3.2-deficient mice and littermate controls was recorded during a 24-h baseline, 6-h sleep deprivation (SD) and subsequen

Effects of a magnesium-deficient diet on sleep organization in rats.

The influence of magnesium, one of the most important cations in the vertebrate body, on the sleep-wakefulness cycle and ECoG patterns in chronically implanted rats recorded during the light period over a 6-hour period was investigated. Two groups of rats were studied. Group 1 (6 rats): after a control period of 2 weeks, the rats were maintained for 9 weeks on a Mg(2+)-deficient diet. Group 2 (5 rats): after a control period of 2 weeks, the rats were maintained for 7 weeks on a Mg(2+)-deficient diet followed by 4 weeks on a normal diet (recovery period: weeks 8-11). Mg(2+)-deficient diet for 9

Animal Models for the Study of Neurological Diseases and Their Link to Sleep.

Sleep is a vital biological function governed by neuronal networks in the brainstem, hypothalamus, and thalamus. Disruptions in these circuits contribute to the sleep disturbances observed in neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, Huntington's disease, and Alzheimer's disease. Oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and abnormal protein accumulation adversely affect sleep architecture in these conditions. The interaction among these pathological processes is believed to modify sleep-regulating circuits, consequently worsening clinical symp

The effect of acute morphine on sleep in male patients suffering from sleep apnea: Is there a genetic effect? An RCT Study.

Questionnaire-based studies have suggested genetic differences in sleep symptoms in chronic opioid users. The present study aims to investigate if there is a genetic effect on sleep architecture and quantitative electroencephalogram (EEG) in response to acute morphine. Under a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design, 68 men with obstructive sleep apnea undertook two overnight polysomnographic studies conducted at least 1 week apart. Each night they received either 40 mg of controlled-release morphine or placebo. Sleep architecture and quantitative EEG were compared betwe

The effect of sildenafil on sleep respiratory parameters and heart rate variability in obstructive sleep apnea.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the magnitude of effects of sildenafil on respiratory parameters and heart rate variability (HRV) in slow wave sleep (SWS) and REM sleep of patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS: Thirteen male patients with untreated severe OSA (aged 43+/-10 years, body mass index of 26.7+/-1.9 kg/m(2)) were studied on two nights, one with sildenafil 50mg and one with a placebo, in a double-blind, randomized fashion. All-night polysomnography and HRV were simultaneously recorded. Short-term HRV measures were performed in apnea-free intervals. Respiratory parameters

The glymphatic system and its involvement in disorders of the nervous system.

The central nervous system was thought to be devoid of lymphatics. Recently, the existence of an authentic brain lymphatic system, known as the glymphatic system, composed of paravascular channels penetrating arterial and venous brain vessels and dural lymphatics cleaning the interstitial space, has been demonstrated. Aquaporin-4, located in astrocyte feet attached to the paravascular spaces, plays a key role in the clearance of waste molecules, such as beta-amyloid or tau proteins. The activity of this system is increased during sleep, mainly in the slow wave phase and while sleeping on one s

Questions to ask a patient with nocturia.

BACKGROUND: Patients may not raise nocturia as a concern as they mistakenly consider the symptom to be a normal part of ageing. Nocturia is associated with significant morbidity and is likely to be a marker of poor health. OBJECTIVE: This paper provides questions to guide diagnosis, evaluation and individualised treatment of nocturia. DISCUSSION: Nocturia results from the interplay between nocturnal polyuria, reduced bladder storage and sleep disruption. Changes in the function of the urinary bladder, kidneys, brain and cardiovascular system, and hormone status underlie the development and p

Emerging therapies in narcolepsy-cataplexy.

In the past, narcolepsy was primarily treated using amphetamine-like stimulants and tricyclic antidepressants. Newer and novel agents, such as the wake-promoting compound modafinil and more selective reuptake inhibitors targeting the adrenergic, dopaminergic, and/or serotoninergic reuptake sites (ie, venlafaxine, atomoxetine) are better-tolerated available alternatives. The development of these agents, together with sodium oxybate (a slow-wave sleep-enhancing agent that consolidates nocturnal sleep, reduces cataplexy, and improves sleepiness), has led to improved functioning and quality of lif

Subthalamic nucleus beta oscillations and sleep disorders in Parkinson's disease: A new perspective on deep brain stimulation regulation mechanisms and circuits.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is increasingly recognized as a multisystem neurodegenerative disorder that extends far beyond its classical motor manifestations. Among its non-motor symptoms, sleep disturbances are among the most prevalent and disabling clinical features, affecting up to 80% of patients and often preceding the onset of motor symptoms by several years. Recent electrophysiological studies have identified the subthalamic nucleus (STN) as a critical hub linking motor dysfunction to sleep abnormalities. Aberrant synchronization of beta (13-30 Hz) oscillations in STN local field potential

Daytime sleepiness and polysomnography in obstructive sleep apnea patients.

BACKGROUND: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is the major complaint in subjects with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). However, EDS is not universally present in all patients with OSAS. The mechanisms explaining why some patients with OSAS complain of EDS whereas others do not are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To investigate polysomnographic determinants of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in a large multicenter cohort of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS). METHODS: All consecutive patients with an apnea-hypopnea index greater than 5h(-1) who were evaluated between 2003 and 2005.

Effects of epilepsy treatments on sleep architecture and daytime sleepiness: an evidence-based review of objective sleep metrics.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep is considered restorative, and good quantity and quality sleep is required for memory consolidation and synaptic plasticity. Sleep disorders are common in patients with epilepsy. Poor sleep quality or quantity may worsen seizure control. On the other end, seizures and epilepsy may worsen the sleep quality and set a vicious cycle. In addition, antiepileptic drugs have an effect on sleep architecture. We performed a systemic literature review with a goal to evaluate the effect of antiepileptic drugs and nondrug treatments for epilepsy on sleep architecture to help better underst

Clinical and genetic studies of fatal familial insomnia.

We report a 42-year-old man who, for 8 months, had intermittent motor abnormalities and mild difficulty falling asleep. A diagnosis of fatal familial insomnia (FFI) became evident over the next 6 months when he developed progressive insomnia, myoclonus, sympathetic hyperactivity, and dementia. The amyloid or prion protein (PrP) genotype showed features typically seen in FFI, with a 178Asn mutation and a 129Met polymorphism. There was also a deletion of one octapeptide repeat, suggesting that the association of 178Asn mutation with the 129Met polymorphism is not due to "founder effect." Western
