Nutrition therapy for hepatic glycogen storage diseases.

Hepatic glycogen storage diseases (GSD) are a group of rare genetic disorders in which glycogen cannot be metabolized to glucose in the liver because of one of a number of possible enzyme deficiencies along the glycogenolytic pathway. Patients with GSD are usually diagnosed in infancy or early childhood with hypoglycemia, hepatomegaly, poor physical growth, and a deranged biochemical profile. Dietary therapies have been devised to use the available alternative metabolic pathways to compensate for disturbed glycogenolysis in GSD I (glucose-6-phosphatase deficiency), GSD III (debrancher enzyme d

A prospective study of risk for peptic ulcer disease in Seventh-Day Adventists.

Cross-sectional and prospective data were collected and analyzed to identify risk factors for the development of peptic ulcer disease in a population of 34,198 white, non-Hispanic Seventh-Day Adventists. On a life-style questionnaire administered in 1976, 3853 subjects reported ever having had a physician-diagnosed peptic ulcer for a lifetime prevalence of 13.5% for men and 11.0% for women. Odds ratios of greater than 2.0 (P less than 0.0001) were observed for use of "stronger pain relievers," current cigarette smoking, and history of rheumatism or other arthritis and coronary disease. For bot

The effect of a whey protein supplement dose on satiety and food intake in resistance training athletes.

OBJECTIVE: Many athletes perform resistance training and consume dietary protein as a strategy to promote anabolic adaptation. Due to its high satiety value, the regular addition of supplemented dietary protein could plausibly displace other key macronutrients such as carbohydrate in an athlete's diet. This effect will be influenced by the form and dose of protein. Therefore, this study assessed the impact of liquid whey protein dose manipulation on subjective sensations of appetite and food intake in a cohort of athletes. DESIGN: Ten male athletes who performed both resistance and aerobic (e

Effects of quercetin supplementation on markers of muscle damage and inflammation after eccentric exercise.

The flavonoid quercetin is purported to have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study examined if quercetin supplementation attenuates indicators of exercise-induced muscle damage in a double-blind laboratory study. Thirty healthy subjects were randomized to quercetin (QU) or placebo (PL) supplementation and performed 2 separate sessions of 24 eccentric contractions of the elbow flexors. Muscle strength, soreness, resting arm angle, upper arm swelling, serum creatine kinase (CK) activity, plasma quercetin (PQ), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were asse

Dietary behavior and its association with sleep-disordered breathing symptoms in Taiwanese children.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is highly prevalent in children and is associated with significant cognitive, metabolic, and quality-of-life (QOL) impairments. While obesity is a primary risk factor, the role of specific dietary behaviors as independent, modifiable contributors to SDB symptom severity remains underexplored. PURPOSE: We aimed to (1) examine the association between dietary intake and SDB symptom severity in children, and (2) develop and validate a dietary-based prediction model for moderate-to-severe SDB (msSDB). METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed baseli

The Triple Burden of Malnutrition among Children and Adolescents in Indonesia during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Narrative Review.

Children and adolescents in Indonesia are experiencing the triple burden of malnutrition (TBM), resulting from an increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity paired with persistent undernutrition and anemia. The extent to which the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) further exacerbated TBM within this group, because of lifestyle changes and increased food insecurity, has not been well documented. This narrative review aimed to fill that gap by exploring components of TBM (i.e., undernutrition, anemia, and overweight and obesity), its determinants (e.g., diet), and related nutrition polici

Evaluation of Water Status and Thermal Characteristics of Dried Carrot Half-Slices in Correlation with Physicochemical and Sensory Properties.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of enriching carrot slices by NFC (not from concentrate) juices from chokeberry (CH), sea buckthorn (SB), cherry (CHE) and carrot (CA) before microwave-vacuum (MVD) and freeze-drying (FD) carrot on the physicochemical and thermal properties. While water activity (AW) was not dependent on enrichment treatment but only on drying method, NFC juices significantly enriched carrot slices with biocomponents. Freeze-dried samples, as a reference, had significantly lower AW than those dried by the MVD method. Both FD and MVD-dried samples had comparabl

Does body mass index mediate the association between dietary patterns and colorectal neoplasia among individuals at above-average risk for colorectal cancer?

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Modifiable factors, including dietary patterns and body mass index (BMI) are associated with the risk of colorectal neoplasia in the general population. However, evidence is limited on whether the association between dietary patterns and colorectal neoplasia is mediated through BMI among individuals at above-average risk for colorectal cancer due to a family or personal history of colorectal neoplasia. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between dietary patterns and colorectal neoplasia and assess the mediating role of BMI on their associations. METHO
