Unraveling the Cross-Cultural Differences in Online Expression of Social Anxiety in Online Support Communities.

Individuals suffering from social anxiety disorder (SAD) are increasingly turning to online support communities for self-disclosure and social support. Despite the extensive body of research on online mental health discourses, the cultural nuances within SAD-related discussions remain underexplored. In this study, we examine the cultural differences in online expression of social anxiety by analyzing individuals' self-disclosure and support-seeking behaviors in social media posts. Using two-week data (n = 1,681) from two SAD support communities on the Reddit and Douban groups, we used both qua

Longitudinal Behavior Phenotype Hallmarks in RNU4-2 Syndrome: Implications for Clinical Management.

Pathogenic variants in the non-coding spliceosomal gene RNU4-2 underlie ReNU syndrome, one of the most prevalent monogenic causes of neurodevelopmental disorders, accounting for ~0.4% of cases. Despite increasing recognition, little is known about the longitudinal behavioral and neuropsychiatric phenotype of affected individuals. We report two patients with RNU4-2 variants, providing a comprehensive description of their developmental trajectories from infancy to adolescence. Both exhibited global developmental delay, impaired adaptive functioning, and significant language deficits. Distinctive

In-depth behavioral characterization of a rat model of Schaaf-Yang syndrome.

Schaaf-Yang syndrome (SYS, OMIM #615547) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by truncating variants in the maternally imprinted MAGEL2 gene. It is characterized by intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, joint contractures, and feeding difficulties. Although MAGEL2 is deleted in most cases of Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS, OMIM #176270), SYS presents with more severe symptoms, suggesting pathogenic effects of truncated MAGEL2 beyond a mere loss of function. This study expands the behavioral characterization of a novel rat model ("Magel2Pmut rats") which carries a truncating mu

Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 Has the Potential to Be Used as a Diagnostic Tool and Treatment Target for Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental disorders, is characterized by social impairment and repetitive and stereotypic behaviors. Because of the lack of approved laboratory diagnostic markers and effective therapeutic medications, it is one of the most challenging diseases. Therefore, it is urgent to explore potential diagnosis markers or therapeutic targets. Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a neurotrophic growth factor that enhances brain development. IGF-1 levels in body fluids are lower in preschool children with ASD than in typically developing c

Short- and Long-Term Neurobehavioral Effects of Developmental Exposure to Valproic Acid in Zebrafish.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, anxiety, hyperactivity, and interest restricted to specific subjects. In addition to the genetic factors, multiple environmental factors have been related to the development of ASD. Animal models can serve as crucial tools for understanding the complexity of ASD. In this study, a chemical model of ASD has been developed in zebrafish by exposing embryos to valproic acid (VPA) from 4 to 48 h post-fertilization, rearing them to the adult stage in fish water. For th

Cannabinoid treatment for the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting approximately 3% of school-age children. The core symptoms are deficits in social communication and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. Associated problems in cognition, language, behavior, sleep and mood are prevalent. Currently, no established pharmacological treatment exists for core ASD symptoms. Risperidone and aripiprazole are used to manage associated irritability, but their effectiveness is limited and adverse events are common. AREAS COVERED: This mini-review summarizes existing scient

Endocannabinoid markers in autism spectrum disorder: A scoping review of human studies.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social communication deficits and patterns of restrictive and repetitive behavior. Although the neurological underpinnings of ASD remain elusive, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) may play a role in modulating social behavior in ASD. Preclinical studies have suggested that alterations in the ECS result in ASD-like phenotypes, but currently no reviews have examined ECS abnormalities in human studies. This scoping review investigated any evidence of ECS alterations in humans with ASD. A comprehensive literature searc

Participation and Experiences in Extracurricular Activities for Children With Developmental Language Disorder and Their Peers.

OBJECTIVES: Participation in organised extracurricular social activities (OESAs) can provide wide-ranging positive developmental benefits for children. This study investigated whether participation and experiences differ for children aged 4- to 12-years with a developmental language disorder (DLD) compared to their typical language developing (TLD) peers. METHODS: Parents of children with DLD (n = 18) and those of TLD peers (n = 21) reflected on their child's participation and experiences in OESAs. RESULTS: Results demonstrated that parents of children with DLD reported engagement in a simil

Specific phobia of illness in the community.

This study evaluated the prevalence, risk factors and morbidity associated with specific phobia of illness. Subjects were from a random, community telephone survey of 500 persons age 40 to 65 who lived in Johnson County, Iowa, USA. Forty-three subjects reported that illness fears substantially bothered them personally or affected their medical care, work, or social life. Twenty-one of these subjects could be contacted and agreed to a semistructured interview designed to diagnose specific phobia of illness and screen for other common psychiatric disorders. Based on the interview, 10 subjects me

Predictors and moderators of improved social-emotional functioning in mothers with substance use disorders and their young children enrolled in a relationship-based case management program.

Mothers with substance use disorders (SUDs) typically have trauma histories and psychosocial difficulties that lead to poor social-emotional functioning and disrupted mother-child relationships. This 12-month study explored associations of family adverse circumstances and services (case management, therapeutic, and community-based) received by 57-mothers with SUDs and their infants (less than 24-months-old) with changes in social-emotional functioning. All mothers were enrolled in a relationship-based case management program (Parent-Child Assistance Program [PCAP]) that emphasized connecting m

Repetitive self-grooming behavior in the BTBR mouse model of autism is blocked by the mGluR5 antagonist MPEP.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by abnormal reciprocal social interactions, communication deficits, and repetitive behaviors with restricted interests. BTBR T+tf/J (BTBR) is an inbred mouse strain that shows robust behavioral phenotypes with analogies to all three of the diagnostic symptoms of autism, including well-replicated deficits in reciprocal social interactions and social approach, unusual patterns of ultrasonic vocalization, and high levels of repetitive self-grooming. These phenotypes offer straightforward behavioral assays for translational investigations of ph

Community Asset Mapping: Promoting Inclusion and Equity and Countering Stigma in Applied Substance Use Research.

People Who Use Substances (PWUS) are among the most stigmatised groups in society. Stigma associated with substance use is known to be detrimental to the individual's wellbeing, and substance use is often used as a mechanism by policy makers and services to legitimise exclusion. PWUS often do not benefit from the drug and alcohol services that are available to them. Community Asset Mapping (CAM) is a strengths-based approach involving the re-engagement of communities through active involvement in research. There are criticisms and concerns about equity and the burden on participants involved i

Autistic syndrome with onset at age 31 years: herpes encephalitis as a possible model for childhood autism.

The author describes a previously healthy man who contracted herpes encephalitis at the age of 31 years, and over the following months developed all the symptoms considered diagnostic of autism. This case report casts doubt on the notion of autism as an exclusively developmental disorder. It is suggested that temporal lobe damage may cause autism in some cases.

Resources and supports for mothers with severe mental illness.

Over the past 20 years, community mental health services have enabled individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) to spend more time in the community and to have greater opportunities to face normal developmental life tasks. Currently, women with SMI appear to be as likely to have children as women in the general population. Although these mothers tend to be single parents, often live in inadequate housing, have small social networks, and lack social and emotional supports, they have received little treatment attention. This article presents a systematic review of literature published in the

Mll5 haploinsufficiency attenuates microglial phagocytosis through dysregulated TREM2-SGK3-GSK3β signaling and recapitulates ASD-like behaviors in mice.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and repetitive behaviors. Recent studies have indicated that heterozygous mutations in the mixed lineage leukemia 5 (MLL5) gene are implicated in ASD susceptibility and associated with neurodevelopmental abnormalities. However, the detailed mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that Mll5 haploinsufficiency in mice impairs microglial phagocytosis, drives neuronal hyperexcitability, and recapitulates core ASD-like behaviors. We also show that Mll5 acts as

Neuroglia in autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behavior, typically diagnosed during early childhood and attributed to altered neuronal network connectivity. Several genetic and environmental risk factors contribute to ASD, including pre- or early life immune activation, which can trigger microglial and astroglial reactivity, impacting early neurodevelopment. In ASD, astrocytes show altered glutamate metabolism, directly influencing neuronal network activity, while microglia display impaired synaptic pruning, an essential dev

A review of methods for classification and recognition of ASD using fMRI data.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a severe neuropsychiatric brain disorder that affects people's social communication and daily routine. Considering the phenomenon of abnormal brain function in the early stage of ASD, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), an excellent technique that measures brain activity, provides effective data to study ASD. Therefore, based on fMRI data of ASD cases, this paper reviews the progress of machine learning methods and deep learning methods in ASD classification and recognition in the last three years and summarizes the different research results of fMRI
