PURPOSE: To assess oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients requiring orthognathic surgery, and evaluate if depression, temporomandibular disorders (TMD), and genetic polymorphisms in interleukin-6 (IL6) influence their OHRQoL.
METHODS: A total of 132 individuals included in three different groups. Two groups were composed by patients with dentofacial deformity (DFD) Class II (n = 44) or Class III (n = 44) malocclusions, requiring orthognathic surgery. The control group (n = 44) included individuals without DFD. Patients from all groups were evaluated in preoperative appointme

Schistosomiasis is one of the most important and widespread neglected tropical diseases (NTD), with over 200 million people infected in more than 70 countries; the disease has nearly 800 million people at risk in endemic areas. Although mass drug administration is a cost-effective approach to reduce occurrence, extent, and severity of the disease, it does not provide protection to subsequent reinfection. Interventions that target the parasites' intermediate snail hosts are a crucial part of the integrated strategy required to move toward disease elimination. The recent revolution in gene drive

Despite moderate heritability estimates, the molecular architecture of aggressive behavior remains poorly characterized. This study compared gene expression profiles from a genetic mouse model of aggression with zebrafish, an animal model traditionally used to study aggression. A meta-analytic, cross-species approach was used to identify genomic variants associated with aggressive behavior. The Rankprod algorithm was used to evaluated mRNA differences from prefrontal cortex tissues of three sets of mouse lines (N = 18) selectively bred for low and high aggressive behavior (SAL/LAL, TA/TNA, and

Dual hereditary jaundice, a combination of Dubin-Johnson and Gilbert's syndromes, is a rare clinical entity resulting from the compound defects of bilirubin conjugation and transport. We aimed to study the hereditary jaundice in 56 members from seven seemingly unrelated Roma families, to find the causal genetic defect and to estimate its origin in Roma population. On the basis of biochemical results of total and conjugated serum bilirubin and clinical observations, ABCC2 gene, TATA box and phenobarbital enhancer (PBREM) of UGT1A1 gene were analyzed by sequencing, RFLP and fragment analysis. We

The increase in obesity prevalence cannot be explained by a sudden and generalized change in human genome. It is certainly due to the modification of lifestyle habits and especially of the diet, as well as a lack of physical activity and sedentary living. Changes in the feeding pattern and the subsequent unbalance in the caloric profile of the diet may have had great importance in the occurrence of obesity. The social pressure in relation to the body image, the desire to have a slim body, and the fear to gain weight present in the current society have given way to the proliferation of myths an

In this study, we used deletions at 22q13, which represent a substantial source of human pathology (Phelan/McDermid syndrome), as a model for investigating the molecular mechanisms of terminal deletions that are currently poorly understood. We characterized at the molecular level the genomic rearrangement in 44 unrelated patients with 22q13 monosomy resulting from simple terminal deletions (72%), ring chromosomes (14%), and unbalanced translocations (7%). We also discovered interstitial deletions between 17-74 kb in 9% of the patients. Haploinsufficiency of the SHANK3 gene, confirmed in all re

CONTEXT: Sublingual testosterone is a single-dose treatment often used in studies regarding social, cognitive and sexual behavior. It is hypothesized that an increase in the ratio of free to total testosterone (free fraction) is indirectly, via genomic effects, responsible for the behavioral effects after sublingual testosterone administration.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the pharmacokinetics of three doses sublingual testosterone in premenopausal women. Also, to investigate the SHBG saturation threshold influencing the free level and free fraction of testosterone.
DESIGN: We conducted an inv

Learning and memory were assessed in 24 monozygotic (MZ) pairs of individuals discordant for schizophrenia or delusional disorder and seven normal pairs of MZ twins. On declarative memory tasks, the affected group displayed a pattern that might best be characterized as dysmnesic in that they performed significantly worse than the discordant unaffected group on story recall, paired associated learning, and visual recall of designs, but they learned over time, had relatively preserved recognition memory, and did not show profoundly accelerated rates of forgetting. Effortful, volitional retrieval

Genomewide association studies (GWAS) are being reported for an increasing number of common diseases, including first reports on GWAS for hepatobiliary diseases. Most common liver diseases are multifactorial (complex) diseases that are modified by higher-order interactions between multiple genetic and environmental risk factors. The aim of GWAS is to identify the genetic risk factors contributing to disease susceptibility and/or progression. In GWAS, large patient cohorts are genotyped for genetic markers that cover the whole genome, and genotypes are associated with phenotypes by contingency

Maternal defensive aggression towards humans reflects poor sow welfare and undermines stockpersons' safety. Selection on young boars using proxies for human-directed defensive aggression would be advantageous because their high reproductive contribution allows them to substantially influence the genetic composition of subsequent generations. We analysed feeding behaviours expected to reflect individual personality and social influences, in pre-pubertal male pigs and estimated their genetic correlations with maternal defensive aggression. Automatically recorded feeding data were available for g

BACKGROUND: Global health security is increasingly threatened by emerging viral syndemics, where infectious viruses interact synergistically with socio-economic-structural vulnerabilities. Traditional reactive surveillance is increasingly insufficient to address the complexity of these interconnected crises. This systematic review aims to synthesize evidence for the "Silicon Shield," a proactive computational framework integrating mathematical modelling and artificial intelligence (AI) to bridge a unified computational framework, and critical literature gaps for pandemic preparedness and respo

Lockdowns and social restrictions imposed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic intensified the proximity and reciprocal exposure among members of nuclear families. It is unclear how variation in mental distress during this period is attributed to potential influences of family members. This study used genetic data from adolescents (n = 4 388), mothers (n = 27 852) and fathers (n = 25 953), to disentangle the contributions of parent-driven, child-driven, and partner-driven components to mental distress during the first two months of the Covid-19 lockdown. Separate models also included adolescen

Background/Objectives: Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS), caused by either chromosome 22q13.3 deletions or pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants in the SHANK3 gene, is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder. Behavioral issues greatly impair the quality of life for affected individuals and their families. This genotype-phenotype study intended to further characterize key behavioral features and their genetic and metabolic correlates in PMS. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data on 56 individuals with PMS. Autistic and related behaviors were assessed with the Autism Diagnosis Intervi

OBJECTIVE: Some individuals avoid Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology as they age, or retain cognition despite substantial pathology, suggesting mechanisms of resistance or resilience to neurodegeneration. Educational attainment (EA) is associated with reduced risk of cognitive decline, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated whether genome-wide polygenic scores (GPS) based on cognitive and non-cognitive components of EA, reflecting intelligence and behavioral/social traits, respectively, show differential associations with AD diagnosis and neuropathology.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interactions and communication, repetitive, or stereotyped behavior. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an essential polyunsaturated fatty acid, has been demonstrated to exert anti-oxidative stress and anti-inflammatory properties, while also promoting myelin development and neural differentiation and development. However, it remains uncertain whether DHA can ameliorate autistic-like behaviors, and if so, the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. Here, we established a neonatal maternal separ

The human capacity to speak is fundamental to our advanced intellectual, technological and social development. Yet so very little is known regarding the evolutionary genetics of speech or its relationship with the broader aspects of evolutionary development in primates. In this study, we describe a large family with evolutionary retrograde development of the larynx and wrist. The family presented with severe speech impairment and incremental retrograde elongations of the pisiform in the wrist that limited wrist rotation from 180° to 90° as in primitive primates. To our surprise, we found that

Atractylodes lancea (Thunb.) DC. (AL) has been indicated in traditional prescriptions for the treatment of depression. However, the mechanism of action of AL in the treatment of depression is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the antidepressant potential of AL using network pharmacology, molecular docking, and animal experiments. The active components of AL were retrieved from the traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology database and analysis platform (TCMSP), and the depression-related targets were screened through the DisGeNET database. Overlapping targets of AL and dep
