Abnormal gray matter volume and functional connectivity patterns in social cognition-related brain regions of young children with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with abnormal brain imaging findings, but descriptions thereof are inconsistent. The aim of the present study was to investigate brain abnormalities in young children with ASD using a combination of structural and functional brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Structural and resting-state functional MRI was performed in 67 children with ASD (aged 2-7 years) and 39 age-matched typically developing (TD) controls. Voxel-based morphometry was used to evaluate differences in brain structure between groups. Topologic parameters of the functional brain

The Neural Correlates of Intelligence Comparison.

Social comparison plays an important role in our daily life. Several studies have investigated the neural mechanism of social comparison; however, their conclusions remain controversial. The present study explored the neural correlates of intelligence comparison and nonsocial size comparison using functional magnetic resonance imaging and a distance effect paradigm. We found that both intelligence and size comparisons obeyed the behavioral distance effect-longer response times for near than far distances and this effect involved an overlapping frontal network including the dorsomedial prefront

Assessment of Social Support and Quitting Smoking in an Online Community Forum: Study Involving Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: A key factor in successfully reducing and quitting smoking, as well as preventing smoking relapse is access to and engagement with social support. Recent technological advances have made it possible for smokers to access social support via online community forums. While community forums associated with smoking cessation interventions are now common practice, there is a gap in understanding how and when the different types of social support identified by Cutrona and Suhr (1992) (emotional, esteem, informational, tangible, and network) are exchanged on such forums. Community forums t

Bridging of childhood obsessive-compulsive personality disorder traits and adult eating disorder symptoms: A network analysis approach.

OBJECTIVES: Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCDP) traits are commonly associated with eating disorders (EDs), with evidence demonstrating that these traits predispose and exacerbate the ED illness course. However, limited research has examined the symptomatic interplay between ED and OCDP traits. We used network analysis to (1) identify the most central symptoms in a network comprised of OCPD traits retrospectively assessed in childhood and ED symptoms and (2) to identify symptoms which bridged OCPD traits and ED symptoms. METHODS: Participants were 320 females with an ED (anorexia

A qualitative study of abortion decision-making trajectories among pregnant women at their first antenatal care visit in Kampala, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: In Uganda, only about half of women who want to avoid pregnancy are using modern contraceptives, leading to high numbers of unintended pregnancies and elevated maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. In this study, we aimed to learn more about women's abortion decision-making before continuing to carry a pregnancy. METHODS: We utilised a qualitative study design and interviewed 31 purposively selected single and partnered pregnant women aged ≥18 years at their first antenatal care visit at Kawempe National Referral Hospital in Kampala, Uganda. We conducted the interviews in

Family function, anxiety and depression in adults with disabilities: a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of family dysfunction, anxiety and depression is high in people with disabilities due to long-term activity constraints and social difficulties. Recently, although studies have attempted to provide guidance for family therapy by focusing on the relationship between family function and negative emotions, the specific effects of improved family function during family therapy on alleviation of anxiety and depressive symptoms have been obscured. Thus, this study attempted to elucidate the impact of specific family functioning on specific symptoms of anxiety and depressio

Using Latent Profile Analysis to Identify Stigma Typologies Among a Sample of Women Living with HIV and Who Inject Drugs in Ukraine.

Women living with HIV (WLWH) who inject drugs experience intersecting forms of stigma that adversely impact care engagement and health outcomes. We used latent profile analysis to identify typologies of intersecting stigma among WLWH who inject drugs and examined individual, social, and health care-related factors associated with these typologies. Surveys were collected from WLWH in Ukraine (n = 297) between 2019 and 2020. Six scales for internalized and enacted stigma related to HIV and drug use were used, then multinomial logistic regression assessed factors associated with profile membershi

Multiple cognition associated multimodal brain networks in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder frequently leads to cognitive impairments, significantly affecting patients' quality of life. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying cognitive deficits remain unclear. This study aimed to explore multimodal imaging biomarkers associated with cognitive function in major depressive disorder. Five cognitive scores (sustained attention, visual recognition memory, pattern recognition memory, executive function, and working memory) were used as references to guide the fusion of gray matter volume and amplitude of the low frequency fluctuation. Social function wa

Differences between physician social networks for cardiac surgery serving communities with high versus low proportions of black residents.

BACKGROUND: Compared with white patients, black patients are more likely to undergo cardiac surgery at low-quality hospitals, even when they live closer to high-quality ones. Opportunities for organizational interventions to alleviate this problem remain elusive. OBJECTIVES: To explore physician isolation in communities with high proportions of black residents as a factor contributing to racial disparities in access to high-quality hospitals for cardiac surgery. RESEARCH DESIGN: Using national Medicare data (2008-2011), we mapped physician social networks at hospitals where coronary artery b

Functional Networks Abnormalities in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Age-Related Hypo and Hyper Connectivity.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized by defects in social interaction. The past functional connectivity studies using resting-state fMRI have found both patterns of hypo-connectivity and hyper-connectivity in ASD and proposed the age as an important factor on functional connectivity disorders. However, this influence is not clearly characterized yet. Previous studies have often examined the functional connectivity disorders in particular brain regions in an age group or a mixture of age groups. The present study compares whole-brain within-connectivity and b

Resting-state functional under-connectivity within and between large-scale cortical networks across three low-frequency bands in adolescents with autism.

Although evidence is accumulating that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with disruption of functional connections between and within brain networks, it remains largely unknown whether these abnormalities are related to specific frequency bands. To address this question, network contingency analysis was performed on brain functional connectomes obtained from 213 adolescent participants across nine sites in the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE) multisite sample, to determine the disrupted connections between and within seven major cortical networks in adolescents with ASD at

Social Protections and Climate Migration: Service Navigation among Puerto Ricans Displaced by Hurricane Maria.

As climate change continues to displace greater numbers of people, transnational ties are important sources of social protection for climate migrants. Migrants assemble unique configurations of formal and informal social protections depending on the resources available within their sending and receiving communities. However, the specific constellations of social protections that climate migrants use following disaster and displacement remain underexamined. Authors conducted semistructured interviews with Puerto Ricans who migrated in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria (N = 41) and used qualitati

Frailty as a Moderator of the Relationship between Social Isolation and Health Outcomes in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

This research investigated the effects of social isolation on frailty and health outcomes and tested whether these associations varied across different levels of frailty. We performed a multivariate analysis of the first wave of Frailty: A longitudinal study of its expressions (FRéLE) among 1643 Canadian older adults aged 65 years and over. We assessed social isolation using social participation, social networks, and support from various social ties, namely, friends, children, extended family, and partner. Frailty was associated with disability, comorbidity, depression, and cognitive decline.
