Impact of Living Alone on Depressive Symptoms in Older Korean Widows.

We examined the relationship between living alone and the prevalence of depressive symptoms in older Korean widows and assessed the individual contributions of health, social ties, and socioeconomic factors to the development of depressive symptoms. The study was a secondary analysis using data from widows, 65 years of age and older, who participated in the Living Profiles of Older People Survey (LPOPS). A logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the contributions of health, social ties, and socioeconomic factors to the development of depressive symptoms. Working status and equivalent

Social and behavioural risk factors for HIV infection among the wives of labour migrants in Nepal.

Summary Labour migration has increased the risk of HIV infection among the wives of labour migrants in Nepal. We conducted a matched case-control study to identify the social and behavioural factors for HIV infection among the wives of labour migrants in Nepal. We interviewed 112 wives of labour migrants diagnosed with HIV (cases) and 112 wives of labour migrants testing negative for HIV (controls) and used logistic regression analysis to assess independent factors associated with HIV infection. Literacy status was the only one woman-related social factor associated with HIV infection. Meanwhi

Social Safety Questionnaire: Development and Validation of a Psychometric Scale Assessing Social Safety and Social Threat.

Social Safety Theory posits that perceptions of social safety and social threat shape human health and behavior, yet no instrument exists for assessing these constructs. To address this gap, we developed and validated the 20-item Social Safety Questionnaire (SSQ) in a community sample of 503 adults (preregistration: osf.io/qaeh3). Four factors were identified: social rejection, social support, social acceptance, and interpersonal trust. As expected, social safety positively related to perceived social support (r=.75) and social safeness (r=.81), and negatively to loneliness (r=-.53), psycholog

What drives maternal RSV vaccine uptake? Understanding psychological predictors in Chilean women.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination during pregnancy protects infants, yet its psychosocial determinants remain understudied. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior, this cross-sectional study examined predictors of RSV vaccination intention in a convenience sample of 463 Chilean women of reproductive age recruited through social media. Structural equation modeling showed good fit and explained 64.7% of the variance of intention, controlling for age, number of children, perceived social status, children`s vaccination status, and conspiracy beliefs. Positive attitudes were the stron…

Self-Care Processes as Predictors of Quality of Life in Adults With Moyamoya Disease: A Structural Equation Modeling Study.

Background: Moyamoya disease is a chronic cerebrovascular condition requiring ongoing self-management to prevent complications. Riegel's theory of self-care in chronic illness posits that factors such as disease knowledge, self-efficacy, social support, and access to care influence self-care maintenance, monitoring, and management, which in turn affect health outcomes and quality of life (QoL). Aim: To test a structural equation model of factors influencing self-care and outcomes in adults with moyamoya disease based on Riegel's self-care theory. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 211 adults

Examining Psychosis Risk in Sexual Minority Youth: Increased Exposure to and Differential Impact of the Social Envirome in Early Adolescence.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESES: Sexual minority populations have a higher prevalence of psychotic experiences (PE), possibly due to differential experiences within the social envirome in its positive (eg, social support, parenting) and negative aspects (eg, adverse life events, bullying). This study hypothesized that (1) sexual minority adolescents experience more PE, (2) are more exposed to harmful aspects of the social envirome, and (3) may display differential sensitivity to certain aspects of the social envirome. STUDY DESIGN: Data from 678 adolescents (mean age 15.6 years) were analyzed. Psyc

Development and Validation of a Natural Language Processing Algorithm Using Electronic Health Record Data to Identify Breast Cancer Patients With Low Social Support.

PURPOSE: Social support is important in the management of breast cancer. We developed a series of structured variables or modules from electronic health record (EHR) data to form the basis for the development of EHRsupport, an EHR-based measure of social support. METHODS: We built a natural language processing (NLP) algorithm from clinical notes in 7,989 women diagnosed from January 2006 to September 2021 with invasive breast cancer. Our team reviewed charts, developed a lexicon, manually crafted rules, applied the NLP algorithm to 565,258 EHR notes and 68,760 patient messages -1 to +3 months

The Association Between Social Network Characteristics and Tuberculosis Infection Among Adults in 9 Rural Ugandan Communities.

BACKGROUND: Social network analysis can elucidate tuberculosis transmission dynamics outside the home and may inform novel network-based case-finding strategies. METHODS: We assessed the association between social network characteristics and prevalent tuberculosis infection among residents (aged ≥15 years) of 9 rural communities in Eastern Uganda. Social contacts named during a census were used to create community-specific nonhousehold social networks. We evaluated whether social network structure and characteristics of first-degree contacts (sex, human immunodeficiency virus [HIV] status, tu

Perceived Effects of Neuropsychiatric Symptoms on Functional Status in Early-stage Huntington Disease.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms in Huntington disease (HD) are commonly encountered, but their effects on functional status are poorly understood. In this qualitative study guided by the Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms, 15 HD patients and caregivers completed semi-structured interviews regarding perceived effects of neuropsychiatric symptoms on functional status. Physical, cognitive, and social functional effects were reported, with negative effects on daily activities and social withdrawal being reported by the greatest number of subjects. Participants also reported improved function with interventio

Association of ambient temperature with social isolation among the community-dwelling Chinese older adults: A cross-sectional study in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: The adverse health impacts of ambient temperature have been well-documented, encompassing not only the mortality and morbidity burden but also mood and mental health disorders. However, the relationship between temperature and social isolation remains unexplored. The objective of the current study was to investigate the potential associations between ambient temperature and social isolation among the aging population. METHODS: We took advantage of a cross-sectional survey conducted between January 2017 and November 2018 from a community service program special for older adults age

Structural equation analysis of rural communities in South Africa and Nigeria: social determinants of health, nutritional deficiencies, and perceived HIV symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines the pathways through which social determinants of health influence nutritional deficiency and perceived HIV-related symptoms in rural communities across Southwest Nigeria and the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Specifically, it explores how income, healthcare access, and housing quality are associated with both nutritional status and perceptions of HIV-related symptom burden within these underserved populations. METHODS: Using structural equation modelling (SEM), the study analysed survey data from 496 respondents to assess the direct and indirect effects of key

Health inequalities and homelessness: considering material, spatial and relational dimensions.

Homelessness is a pressing health concern involving material hardship, social marginalization and restrained relationships between homeless and housed people. This article links relational aspects of homelessness, and its health consequences, with material and spatial considerations through the use of photo-elicitation interviews with 12 rough sleepers in London. We highlight the relevance of embodied deprivation for a health psychology that is responsive to the ways in which social inequalities can get under the skin of homeless people and manifest as health disparities.

From basic concepts to clinical reality. Unresolved issues in the diagnosis of dependence.

This chapter discusses clinical and conceptual issues pertaining to the diagnosis of alcohol and drug dependence. Emphasis is given to the difficulties involved in moving from diagnostic concepts, such as those contained in the major psychiatric classification systems, to the clinical situation where diagnostic decisions are made. To illustrate how diagnostic concepts approximate clinical reality, a set of case histories is used to organize a discussion of unresolved issues in the diagnosis of dependence. These issues include the putative syndrome nature of dependence, the problem of diagnosin

Lower social vulnerability is associated with a higher prevalence of social media-involved violent crimes in Prince George's County, Maryland, 2018-2023.

BACKGROUND: Social vulnerability may play a role in social media-involved crime, but few studies have investigated this issue. We investigated associations between social vulnerability and social media-involved violent crimes. METHODS: We analyzed 22,801 violent crimes occurring between 2018 and 2023 in Prince George's County, Maryland. Social media involvement was obtained from crime reports at the Prince George's County Police Department. Social media application types included social networking, advertising/selling, ridesharing, dating, image/video hosting, mobile payment, instant messagin

Behavioural and social drivers of COVID-19 vaccination in Papua New Guinea: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Papua New Guinea (PNG) has one of the world's lowest COVID-19 vaccination rates, despite high awareness of the disease. Understanding the behavioural and social drivers of vaccine acceptance is essential for informing context-appropriate strategies to improve uptake. This study is the first in PNG to systematically apply the WHO Behavioural and Social Drivers (BeSD) framework to examine factors associated with COVID-19 vaccination status. METHODS: A cross-sectional, household-based survey was conducted between July 2023 and May 2024 in urban and rural areas of Eastern Highlands an

As good as it gets: an empirical study on mentally-ill patients and their stay at a general hospital in Sweden, 1896-1905.

General hospital care and treatment of mentally ill patients in a Swedish town was studied in records for 503 patients, 1896-1905. Restraint was extremely rare; 65% left the hospital as healthy or improved. Non-psychotic and alcoholic patients spent fewer days in hospital than patients with psychosis or dementia. There was no evidence of a social status bias. For 36% of the patients a certificate for mental hospital care was issued, with additional information. The cause of illness was stated as unknown for 42% of these patients; adverse circumstances were recorded for 18%. Heredity for mental…

Recourse to induced abortion in Spain: profiling of users and the influence of migrant populations.

BACKGROUND: Social vulnerability implies a higher risk of induced abortion (IA). Immigrant status could be an additional factor. The objective was to identify the patterns surrounding which women resort to IAs, and to study the relationship between socio-economic and health system factors. Another aim was to determine the relationship between the patterns identified and the immigrant's country. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed including all IAs notified during 2006 on women residing in three Spanish autonomous communities (the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Comunitat Valenciana

Homelessness and vulnerability among adults with and without alcohol problems.

While many works compare traits of homeless adults across levels of alcohol use, few specifically consider whether drinking status affects determinants of either homelessness or "vulnerability" to homelessness. This paper relies on a 1986 Chicago, Illinois sample (n = 535) to consider the potential contributions of resources, social network characteristics, disaffiliation, and mental health problems. Results suggest that resource problems may determine homelessness regardless of drinking status. But drinking-associated problems may raise the resource threshold for "vulnerability," reduce the p
