[Disintegration of social cognitive processes in schizophrenia].

UNLABELLED: Despite rapid development of research on social cognition (SC) impairments in schizophrenia, efforts are still made to generate new, broader theoretical models which include the neural network approach to those dysfunctions. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the structure of SC in patients with schizophrenia in comparison to healthy subjects. METHODS: The studied groups consisted of 55 subjects: 30 patients with paranoid schizophrenia according to DSM-IV criteria, and 25 control healthy subjects matched for age, gender and education to the clinical group. In order to ass

A polymorphism of the beta1-adrenergic receptor is associated with low extraversion.

BACKGROUND: We examined the possibility that allelic variation leading to alterations in beta(1)-adrenergic function might be present in persons with elevated social anxiety-related traits. METHODS: A sample of 504 undergraduate college students were phenotyped on a personality inventory (the NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised) and measures of shyness and social anxiety and genotyped for two beta(1) adrenergic (ADRB1 gene) polymorphisms: a serine/glycine substitution at amino acid 49 (Ser49Gly) and an arginine/glycine substitution at residue 389 (Arg389Gly). We hypothesized that the Gly49 vari

Social support network for young mothers of children diagnosed with congenital syphilis.

This study of multiple cases aimed to analyze the social support network of young mothers of children diagnosed with congenital syphilis in a municipality in Ceará with six participants. Information was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the cross-case synthesis analytical technique. The young women's social network comprised family members, people outside the family, and social facilities. We identified heterogeneous bonds and social support as essential in the gestational and postpartum periods after the diagnosis of syphilis. The vertical transmission of syphili

Socioeconomic Status and Depression Among Older Adults with Disabilities in Korea: The Mediating Role of Social Support and the Moderating Effects of Self-Esteem and Public Service Utilization.

Background/Objectives: Depression among older adults with disabilities represents a significant public health concern, with well-documented socioeconomic disparities. However, the mechanisms through which socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with depression in this population remain insufficiently specified. Guided by the Reserve Capacity Model (RCM), this study examines whether social support is statistically associated with the SES-depression relationship and whether this association varies according to psychosocial and structural resources. Methods: Data were drawn from the 18th wave (2

White Matter Tract Changes Associated with Clinical Improvement in an Open-Label Trial Assessing Autologous Umbilical Cord Blood for Treatment of Young Children with Autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social communication deficits and the presence of restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. We have previously reported significant improvements in behavior, including increased social functioning, improved communication abilities, and decreased clinical symptoms in children with ASD, following treatment with a single infusion of autologous cord blood in a phase I open-label trial. In the current study, we aimed to understand whether these improvements were associated with concurrent changes in

The association between social anxiety and social functioning in first episode psychosis.

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between social anxiety and social functioning in first episode psychosis, and to determine whether those with psychosis have any maladaptive or irrational beliefs regarding social situations. A sample of 60 first episode patients (41 males, 19 females) participated in the study. The presence of social phobia was determined using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-I). Measures included The Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory (SPAI), the Social Functioning Scale (SFS), the Quality of Life Scale (QLS) and the Social Interact

Impaired social cognition processes in Asperger syndrome and anorexia nervosa. In search for endophenotypes of social cognition.

A growing number of publications indicates presence of significant deficits in social cognition in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). These deficits appear to be comparable in qualitative and quantitative dimension with impairment of the same functions among people with Asperger syndrome (AS). The aim of this study is to identify subject areas in the field of impairment of social cognition processes among people with Asperger syndrome and anorexia nervosa taking into consideration the potential contribution of genetic pathways of oxytocin and vasopressin in the pathogenesis of these diseases

[Social phobia with interpersonal attitude delusions on the background of endogenous diseases].

The paper presents data on 38 patients with slow-progredient schizophrenia and cyclothymia with clinical picture of social phobias combined with sensitive ideas of reference. Two types of such states were singled out: social phobia of self-insufficiency with isolated sensitive ideas of reference (13 patients) and social phobia with the ideas of physical or mental defect and generalized ideas of reference (25 cases). The states of the first type were observed in the structure of circular melancholic depressions and were characterised by the presence of the ideas of low self-esteem. Phobic avoid

Genetic and Environmental Effects on Parent-Rated Adaptive Behaviour in Infancy.

Adaptive behaviour refers to the everyday skills that individuals are expected to have to function independently, based on their age and societal norms. Currently, we know little about the role of genetic and environmental factors in parent-rated adaptive behaviours in early infancy. The aim of this study was to investigate the aetiological factors that influence individual variability in different adaptive behaviour domains at 5 months, and the degree of genetic and environmental influences that are unique and shared across these domains. We analysed data from the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour

[Quid Nunc? The relationship between the medical world and society in Belgium and in Europe of the 25 at the dawn of the 21st century].

Since about twenty-five years, we observe important transformations of the socio-economic structures of our society, modifying the main references which reign over the social structures and thus over the medical world. As a result, we observe a social syndrome which we can define as a divorce between the medical world and the society. The consequences of this phenomenon can constitute a real danger for the whole society; nevertheless, actually we can still consider that Belgium can assure a very high level of medical care for the greatest part of the population for a really social prize. The m…

Network analysis of social anxiety and problematic mobile phone use in Chinese adolescents: A longitudinal study.

Social anxiety is a common comorbid factor of problematic mobile phone use, but the relationship between them from the inside structure has been underexplored. This two-wave longitudinal study aims to identify the central symptoms of problematic mobile phone use and social anxiety, respectively, as well as the bridge symptoms between the two disorders. Furthermore, this study examined the time and gender differences. A total of 3,294 Chinese adolescents were recruited during two waves (T1: January 2023; T2: August 2023), and completed the questionnaires of social anxiety and problematic mobile

Biological mechanisms and social determinants of antimicrobial resistance.

Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a defining global health crisis, projected to cause 1.91 million annual deaths globally by 2050. These alarming statistics call for a holistic, dual-lens approach that examines the molecular strategies bacteria use to develop antibiotic resistance, as well as the socio-economic drivers and structural inequities that remain critically overlooked in AMR governance. This review delves into two seemingly unrelated but critical aspects of bacterial AMR: biological mechanisms of bacterial resistance and the social norms and structural inequities that play

Social and olfactory experiences modify neuronal morphology of orbital frontal cortex.

Structural modifications in the dendritic morphology of neurons occur following many forms of experience, including exposure to drugs, complex housing, and training in specific behavioral tasks. The present study examined morphological changes in orbitofrontal (OFC) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) neurons of female rats following experience with a variety of social partners or nonsocial olfactory stimuli. We reasoned that experience with various social partners or olfactory stimuli, and the associated behavioral adaptations, would drive structural modifications in prefrontal cortex neurons

Social mobility and class segregation in personal networks over time: evidence from longitudinal data.

This study examines how class-based network homogeneity evolves over time and whether intragenerational social mobility reshapes personal network composition in Chile. Drawing on four waves of longitudinal data from the Chilean Longitudinal Social Survey (ELSOC, 2016-2023), we assess the extent to which class stability and different forms of social mobility-conjunctural, structural, and cumulative-influence the degree of class homogeneity in personal networks. We use the position generator instrument to measure cross-class social ties across 13 occupations, calculating the proportion of ties b

Neurostructural correlate of math anxiety in the brain of children.

Adequate mathematical competencies are currently indispensable in professional and social life. However, mathematics is often associated with stress and frustration and the confrontation with tasks that require mathematical knowledge triggers anxiety in many children. We examined if there is a relationship between math anxiety and changes in brain structure in children with and without developmental dyscalculia. Our findings showed that math anxiety is related to altered brain structure. In particular, the right amygdala volume was reduced in individuals with higher math anxiety. In conclusion

Unravelling the complexity of the relationship between social support sources and loneliness: A mixed-methods study with older adults.

Loneliness is an increasingly significant social and public health issue in contemporary societies. The available evidence suggests that social support is one of the key psychosocial processes for the reduction and prevention of loneliness. This study investigated the role played by sources of social support in the experience of social and emotional loneliness, identifying seven sources of support split between family (spouse/partner, children, grandchildren, siblings) and non-family (friends, neighbours). The study population comprised people aged 65 years and over living in Spain, with a par

Sex-specific cortical networks drive social behavior differences in an autism spectrum disorder model.

Social behavior is highly sensitive to brain network dysfunction caused by neuropsychiatric conditions like autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Some studies suggest that autistic females show fewer social skill impairments than autistic males. However, the relationship between sex differences in social behavior and sexually dimorphic brain neurophysiology in ASD remains unclear. We hypothesize that sex-specific changes in cortical neurophysiology drive the sexual dimorphism observed in social behavior for ASD. To test this, we used male and female Tsc2+/- mice, a genetic ASD model, to examine co

Loss of white matter connections after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and its relationship to social cognition.

Adults with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) often suffer poor social cognition. Social cognition is complex, requiring verbal, non-verbal, auditory, visual and affective input and integration. While damage to focal temporal and frontal areas has been implicated in disorders of social cognition after TBI, the role of white matter pathology has not been examined. In this study 17 adults with chronic, severe TBI and 17 control participants underwent structural MRI scans and Diffusion Tensor Imaging. The Awareness of Social Inference Test (TASIT) was used to assess their ability to understand

Beyond the Clinic Walls: Nurse-Led Socialised Care and Health Equity for Vulnerable Populations in Australia.

AIM: This paper critically examines the Australian College of Nursing's proposed socialised healthcare model and the potential of nurse-led socialised care as a paradigm shift for addressing the intersection of medical need and social distress among vulnerable populations experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, poverty, and other disadvantage. APPROACH: This is a position paper. It offers a theoretical commentary and critical reading that situates the proposed socialised healthcare model within frameworks of social determinants of health, health equity, and socially responsive care deli

'She come like a sister to me': a qualitative study of volunteer social support for disadvantaged women in the transition to motherhood in England.

This qualitative study explores the ways in which disadvantaged women benefit from social support from a trained volunteer during pregnancy and the postnatal period, using the theoretical frameworks of stress and coping and a multi-dimensional model of social support. Forty-seven mothers took part in semi-structured interviews. The mothers, who had received social support through nine volunteer projects in England, faced many potentially stressful challenges besides having a baby (such as poverty, poor housing, histories of abuse, motherhood at a young age, living with physical or mental healt
