Perceived discrimination, social support, and perceived stress among people living with HIV/AIDS in China.

Perceived stress among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH) was associated with severe mental health problems and risk behaviors. Discrimination toward PLWH in China is prevalent. Both perceived discrimination and social supports are determinants of the stress level among PLWH. Psychological support services for PLWH in China are scarce. It is unknown whether social support is a buffer between the perceived discrimination and perceived stress. With written consent, this study surveyed 258 PLWH recruited from multiple sources in two cities in China. Instruments were validated in previous or the p…

Emotional bonds and social support exchange between men living with HIV infection and their mothers.

Men infected with HIV are often faced with caregiving responsibilities of aging, ill parents, while simultaneously looking for support from their parents in dealing with their own health problems. Unfortunately, the reciprocal roles of HIV-positive adult sons and aging mothers as caregivers have not been examined. To address this gap in the literature, HIV-positive men (n = 118) answered open-ended questions about the support they exchanged with their mothers, completed the Depth of Relationships Inventory, and rated the importance of health-related assistance between themselves and their moth

Race/ethnicity, social support, and associations with diabetes self-care and clinical outcomes in NHANES.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate how social support and race/ethnicity were associated with diabetes self-care behaviors and clinical outcomes. METHODS: Using the cross-sectional 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the authors examined white, black, and Latino respondents who self-reported a diabetes diagnosis (n = 450), estimating the associations of social support on diabetes outcomes. The primary exposure was a social support index (0-5), which assessed the number of sources of support in one's life. Outcomes were self-care behaviors (cont…

Physical activity as a potential mechanism through which social support may reduce cardiovascular disease risk.

Social support has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). It has been suggested that the protective effect of social support is mediated through the autonomic nervous system and/or unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, but data are sparse, especially in diverse populations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate possible pathways through which social support may reduce cardiovascular disease risk. Baseline data from The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Family Intervention Trial for Heart Health were included in this analysis (N = 501, mean age 48 +/- 13 years…

Treatment of social phobia: randomised trial of internet-delivered cognitive-behavioural therapy with telephone support.

BACKGROUND: Although effective therapies for social phobia exist, many individuals refrain from seeking treatment owing to the embarrassment associated with help-seeking. Internet-based cognitive-behavioural self-help can be an alternative, but adherence is a problem. AIMS: To evaluate a 9-week programme of internet-based therapy designed to increase treatment adherence by the addition of short weekly telephone calls, nine in all, with a total duration of 95 min. METHOD: In a randomised controlled trial the effects of internet-based cognitive-behavioural therapy in the treatment group (n=29)

Social support as a predictor of health status among older adults living alone in Japan.

The purpose of this study was to determine social support as a predictor of health status among older adults living alone, based on a 2-year longitudinal study in a rural area of Japan. The self-reported questionnaires were distributed to 624 older adults living alone and were collected during home visits by welfare commissioners as baseline survey. After the follow-up survey of 493 respondents as the baseline survey, we analyzed 340 persons who lived alone over the last 2 years. Women had significantly higher emotional and instrumental support scores than men. Receiving positive support from …

Correlates of depressive symptoms among HIV-positive injection drug users: the role of social support.

Using cross-sectional data from an ethnically diverse sample of HIV-positive injection drug users (IDUs), we sought to identify correlates of depressive symptoms. We were particularly interested in whether perceived social support was associated with depression among HIV-positive IDUs and whether social support buffered adverse effects of other correlates. Data were collected from a sample of HIV-positive IDUs recruited from a variety of venues in the New York City and San Francisco metropolitan areas in the USA. Multiple regression analysis identified four significant correlates of depressive…

Hostility, social support, and adrenergic receptor responsiveness among African-American and white men and women.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the relationship between beta-adrenergic receptor responsiveness and hostility and social support in African American and white men and women. METHODS: The participants were 149 men and women, aged 25 to 45 years with SBP < 160 and DBP < 105. Hostility and social support were assessed with standardized self-report measures. An isoproterenol challenge was used to evaluate beta-adrenergic receptor responsiveness, and a phenylephrine challenge was used to evaluate alpha-adrenergic receptor responsiveness. RESULTS: Hostility and social support were unrelated to alpha-adren…

Attachment and loss experiences during childhood are associated with adult hostility, depression, and social support.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined developmental antecedents to psychosocial traits in adulthood that have been linked in prior studies to increased risk of heart disease. The hypothesis was tested that early parental loss coupled with poor-quality family relationships (FR) during childhood would be associated with increased hostility and depression, and lower social support in adulthood. METHODS: Participants included 30 university students who experienced the death of one parent before the age of 16, and 31 control participants. Questionnaires were completed measuring current social support, h…

Cynical hostility and vulnerability to disease: social support, life stress, and physiological response to conflict.

Previous research has indicated that high scores on the Cook and Medley Hostility (Ho) scale are associated with increased risk of coronary … c blood pressure reactivity during interpersonal conflict. Finally, the high-Ho group reported less social support and more negative life events and daily irritants then did the low-Ho group. These results support the interpretation of the Ho scale as a measure of cynical hostility and are consistent with the hypothesis that it is related to disease by way of ex …

Longitudinal impact of different categories of adverse childhood experiences on social participation and informal social support among middle-aged and older adults in China.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can have a significant impact on informal social support (ISS) and social participation (SP) among middle-aged and older adults. Existing studies highlight the critical role of SP and ISS in promoting healthy aging. Social participation is associated with reduced cognitive decline, lower mortality risk, and improved mental health in older adults. ISS is linked to better physical and psychological outcomes. However, despite evidence on the protective effects of SP and ISS, the impact of ACEs on these factors in middle and older adulthood remains …

The role of housing stability in predicting social capital: Exploring social support and psychological integration as mediators for individuals with histories of homelessness and vulnerable housing.

Social capital is a collective asset important for individual and population well-being. Individuals who experience homelessness may face barriers in accessing social capital due to health challenges, small social networks, and social exclusion. Data from a 4-year longitudinal study was used to determine if housing stability predicted greater social capital and if this relationship was mediated by social support and psychological integration for a sample of 855 homeless and vulnerably housed participants living in three Canadian cities. Findings showed that housing stability was not associated…

Potential and limitations of socially assistive robots to support malnutrition care: a critical reflection by dietitians.

Nutrition is essential for the physical and psychological well-being and health of older adults. Malnutrition negatively affects both their physical and mental health and their overall quality of life. Dietitians face challenges in supporting older adults due to time constraints, which can limit the continuity of care. While previous research highlights the potential of assistive technologies to help reduce malnutrition, such as socially assistive robots (SARs), these approaches lack a holistic perspective and insufficiently address collaborative processes within the broader care network. This
