Simulating cranio-maxillofacial surgery based on mixed-element biomechanical modelling.

In cranio-maxillofacial surgical simulation, many difficulties occur in building a realistic biomechanical model of soft tissue deformation, e.g. constitutive properties of the living tissues, geometry description, and kinematics of the facial soft tissues. This paper presents a nonlinear finite mixed-element model (NFM-EM) to enhance the tissue behaviour in the simulation. A novel geometric description method based on the mixed elements is first designed to allow the skin and the internal tissues (muscles and fat) to be discretised with different volumetric elements and assigned unique materi

Atypical extraspinal musculoskeletal tuberculosis in immunocompetent patients: part II, tuberculous myositis, tuberculous bursitis, and tuberculous tenosynovites.

Tuberculosis involving the soft tissue from adjacent bone or joint is well recognized. However, primary tuberculous pyomyositis, tuberculous bursitis, and tuberculous tenosynovitis are rare entities constituting 1% of skeletal tuberculosis. Tuberculous tenosynovitis involves most commonly the tendon sheaths of the hand and wrist, and tuberculous bursitis occurs most commonly around the hip. The greater trochanteric bursa and the greater trochanter are the most frequent sites of tuberculous bursitis. Cases of primary tuberculous pyomyositis and tenosynovitis of the tendons of the ankle and foot

CT findings of plexiform neurofibromatosis involving the ileum and its mesentery.

We present a case of plexiform neurofibromatosis involving the ileum and its mesentery. Computed tomography (CT) scans showed a cluster of small soft-tissue density nodules, which represented a cross-sectional image of the enlarged peripheral nerves and wall thickening of the distal ileum. Trapped fat tissue was demonstrated between these enlarged nerves. Histopathologic studies of the resected specimen correlated well with CT findings.

Peroneal arteriovenous fistula and pseudoaneurysm formation after blunt trauma. A case report.

A 56-year-old man sustained blunt trauma to the right calf which, 15 months later, manifested as a painful soft tissue mass with aggressive destruction of the fibula. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography and popliteal arteriography disclosed a peroneal arteriovenous fistula and pseudoaneurysm. Five years after pseudoaneurysm repair and fistula ligation, the patient was free of symptoms and had no further bone destruction.

Machine learning discovers numerous new computational principles supporting elementary motion detection.

Motion direction detection is a fundamental visual computation that transforms spatial luminance patterns into directionally tuned outputs. Classical models of direction selectivity rely on temporal asymmetry, where motion detection arises through either delayed excitation or inhibition. Here, I used biologically inspired machine learning applied to retinal and cortical circuits to uncover receptive field architectures capable of direction selectivity. These include mechanisms based on asymmetric synaptic properties, spatial receptive field variations, new roles for pre- and postsynaptic inhib

Harnessing Machine Learning to Enhance UV-based Advanced Oxidation Processes for Sustainable Micropollutant Abatement.

Micropollutants represent growing risks to water quality and human health, necessitating solutions beyond conventional treatment. While ultraviolet-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) effectively degrade those micropollutants, their implementation is complex because of difficulties in predicting treatment performance, deriving kinetic parameters, inferring reaction mechanisms, and optimizing energy-intensive operations. Recent advances in machine learning (ML) are providing novel, data-driven solutions to these long-standing challenges. This work provides an overview on the rapid prog

Type two fuzzy logic control system for powered ankle-foot prosthesis: robust performance against terrain and speed variations.

The development of powered prostheses' control systems is drifting away from discontinuous control systems based on the finite state machine (FSM), due to the issues of misclassification. Recent research focused on model-based control systems, most widely used is the hybrid zero dynamic (HZD). However, the HZD system depends on the model accuracy and number of feedback signals. Navigating different terrains is vital for independent mobility for people with lower-limb amputation. In this paper, we propose a control system based on Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) inference. The fuzzy system is based on

Endoscopic soft palate augmentation using injectable materials in dogs to ameliorate velopharyngeal insufficiency.

BACKGROUND: Velopharyngeal structure augmentation methods are used as alternatives to pharyngeal flap operations. Recently, we investigated the sites of velopharyngeal structure augmentation in dogs and reported that the most effective injection location is the soft palate. However, there have been no reports regarding the optimal materials for implantation or injection. In this study, we aimed to investigate the injectable materials used in soft palate augmentation in dogs to ameliorate velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). METHODS: Endoscopic soft palate augmentation (ESPA) was performed in d
