Fronto-parietal activity changes associated with changes in working memory load: Evidence from simultaneous electroencephalography and functional near-infrared spectroscopy analysis.

Working memory (WM) involves the capacity to maintain and manipulate information over short periods. Previous research has suggested that fronto-parietal activities play a crucial role in WM. However, there remains no agreement on the effect of working memory load (WML) on neural activities and haemodynamic responses. Here, our study seeks to examine the effect of WML through simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). In this study, a delay change detection task was conducted on 23 healthy volunteers. The task included three levels: one item, t

Cerebral Hypoxia During Intermittent Hypoxic-Hyperoxic Training (IHHT): A Case Study Using Cerebral Oximetry Based on Time-Domain Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: In intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia training (IHHT), air is inhaled through a mask, with the O2 content of the air varying at intervals. IHHT is used in sports training (e.g. to improve exercise tolerance), but also in medical-therapeutic applications (e.g. to improve cognitive performance and functional exercise capacity in geriatric patients). AIM: We aimed to evaluate the ability of a novel time-domain near-infrared spectroscopy (TD-NIRS) device to measure the effects of IHHT on cerebrovascular oxygenation and haemodynamics. SUBJECT AND METHODS: One subject (41 years old, male,

Gradient boosting DD-MLP Net: An ensemble learning model using near-infrared spectroscopy to classify after-stroke dyskinesia degree during exercise.

This study aims to develop an automatic assessment of after-stroke dyskinesias degree by combining machine learning and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Thirty-five subjects were divided into five stages (healthy, patient: Brunnstrom stages 3, 4, 5, 6). NIRS was used to record the muscular hemodynamic responses from bilateral femoris (biceps brachii) muscles during passive and active upper (lower) limbs circular exercise. We used the D-S evidence theory to conduct feature information fusion and established a Gradient Boosting DD-MLP Net model, combining the dendrite network and multilayer pe

Cortical mapping of active and passive upper limb training in stroke patients and healthy people: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Active exercise for upper limb training has been widely used to improve hemiplegic upper limb function, and its effect may be boosted by extrinsic visual feedback. The passive movement of the hemiplegic upper limb is also commonly used. We conducted a functional near-infrared spectroscopy experiment to compare cortical activation during the following three conditions: active left upper limb movement (on the hemiplegic sides in stroke patients), with or without extrinsic motor performance visual feedback (LAV, LAnV), and passive left upper limb movement (hemiplegic sides in stroke patients) (LP

Alterations in tissue oxygen saturation measured by near-infrared spectroscopy in trauma patients after initial resuscitation are associated with occult shock.

PURPOSE: Persistent occult hypoperfusion after initial resuscitation is strongly associated with increased morbidity and mortality after severe trauma. The objective of this study was to analyze regional tissue oxygenation, along with other global markers, as potential detectors of occult shock in otherwise hemodynamically stable trauma patients. METHODS: Trauma patients undergoing active resuscitation were evaluated 8 h after hospital admission with the measurement of several global and local hemodynamic/metabolic parameters. Apparently hemodynamically stable (AHD) patients, defined as havin

Phonetic versus spatial processes during motor-oriented imitations of visuo-labial and visuo-lingual speech: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

While a large amount of research has studied the facilitation of visual speech on auditory speech recognition, few have investigated the processing of visual speech gestures in motor-oriented tasks that focus on the spatial and motor features of the articulator actions instead of the phonetic features of auditory and visual speech. The current study examined the engagement of spatial and phonetic processing of visual speech in a motor-oriented speech imitation task. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to measure the haemodynamic activities related to spatial processing and a

Titration of inspired oxygen in preterm infants with hypoxemic respiratory failure using near-infrared spectroscopy and pulse oximetry: A new approach.

BACKGROUND: Titration of inspired oxygen is a challenge in preterm infants with hypoxemic respiratory failure (HRF). Monitoring of brain oxygen by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been proven to minimize the burden of hyperoxia and hypoxemia; with a better understanding of cerebral autoregulation, integrating NIRS and pulse oximetry for titrating inspired oxygen in preterm infants is a novel approach. METHODS: We studied the impact of integrated monitoring of oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry (SpO2 ) and cerebral regional tissue oxygen (crRTO) by NIRS during a stepwise oxygen reduction

Comparison of short-channel separation and spatial domain filtering for removal of non-neural components in functional near-infrared spectroscopy signals.

Significance: With the increasing popularity of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), the need to determine localization of the source and nature of the signals has grown. Aim: We compare strategies for removal of non-neural signals for a finger-thumb tapping task, which shows responses in contralateral motor cortex and a visual checkerboard viewing task that produces activity within the occipital lobe. Approach: We compare temporal regression strategies using short-channel separation to a spatial principal component (PC) filter that removes global signals present in all channels. For

Functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy Reveals the Compensatory Potential of Pre-frontal Cortical Activity for Standing Balance in Young and Older Adults.

Recent evidence suggests increased activity of the pre-frontal cortex (PFC) is associated with sensorimotor disturbances of standing balance. Here we manipulate sensorimotor inputs and concurrently load cognitive resources in order to investigate the functional role of PFC activity during standing balance, and how this changes with healthy ageing. Healthy younger (n = 24; mean age = 20.8 years) and older (n = 25; mean age = 70.6 years) adults maintained balance while sensorimotor inputs were manipulated by removing vision, reducing the base of support, and reducing proprioceptive feedback. The Supplementary Motor Area Responsible for Word Retrieval Decline After Acute Thalamic Stroke Revealed by Coupled SPECT and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Damage to the thalamus may affect cognition and language, but the underlying mechanism remains unknown. In particular, it remains a riddle why thalamic aphasia occasionally occurs and then mostly recovers to some degree. To explore the mechanism of the affected cognition and language, we used two neuroimaging techniques-single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), suitable for viewing the affected brain distribution after acute thalamic stroke, and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (f-NIRS), focusing on hemodynamic responses of the supplementary motor area (SMA) responsible for spee

Assessment of the brain ischemia during orthostatic stress and lower body negative pressure in air force pilots by near-infrared spectroscopy.

CASE: We present the case of a 49-year-old woman who underwent a 237-day hunger strike on the streets of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Despite medical supervision and appropriate micronutrient supplementation, including higher-than-recommended dosing of oral thiamine, the patient developed Wernicke's Encephalopathy and subsequent Korsakoff Syndrome. She is now permanently impaired. INTRODUCTION: Hunger strikers are subject to numerous sequelae of micronutrient deficiency. Among these are the paired conditions of Wernicke's Encephalopathy and Korsakoff Syndrome, conditions secondary to prolonged t

Evaluation Through Transcutaneous Tissue Oximetry (Near Infrared Spectroscopy) of Spinal Cord Stimulation in Patients With Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type I.

OBJECTIVE: One of the physiopathological hypothesis behind complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type I involves the deep-tissue hypoxia of the affected areas. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) appears to be effective in the treatment of these patients. We evaluated whether ESCS modifies tissue oxygen saturation (StO2 ) measured with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in the affected limbs in patients diagnosed with CRPS type I. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nonrandomized, cross-sectional study that evaluated 16 patients with CRPS type I who were receiving SCS applied to the posterior cords. NIRS was use

Are perioperative near-infrared spectroscopy values correlated with clinical and biochemical parameters in cyanotic and acyanotic infants following corrective cardiac surgery?

BACKGROUND: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a useful non-invasive tool for monitoring infants undergoing cardiac surgery. In this study, we aimed to determine the NIRS values in cyanotic and acyanotic patients who underwent corrective cardiac surgery for congenital heart diseases. METHODS: Thirty consecutive infants who were operated on with the diagnosis of ventricular septal defect (n=15) and tetralogy of Fallot (n=15) were evaluated retrospectively. A definitive repair of the underlying cardiac pathology was achieved in all cases. A total of six measurements of cerebral and renal NIRS

Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) variable selection for near-infrared microscopy discrimination of meat and bone meal in compound feed.

This article presents a novel method for combining auto-peak and cross-peak information for sensitive variable selection in synchronous two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS). This variable selection method is then applied to the case of near-infrared (NIR) microscopy discrimination of meat and bone meal (MBM). This is of important practical value because MBM is currently banned in ruminate animal compound feed. For the 2D-COS analysis, a set of NIR spectroscopy data of compound feed samples (adulterated with varying concentrations of MBM) was pretreated using standard normal variat
