The rhodamine-auramine O stain was compared with the Kinyoun carbolfuchsin acid-fast stain for detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts in samples from patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF) was examined on various human tissues by radioimmunoassay, immunohistochemistry and Northern blot analysis. Immunoreactive EGF was found in most of the human tissues by radioimmunoassay at various levels. Large quantities of EGF were detected in the kidney and thyroid gland. Immunohistochemically, EGF immunoreactivity was detected mainly in the epithelial cells of the lung, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, kidney, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, mammary gland, ovary, uterus and placenta. Weakly EGF-positive cells were also found in the adrenal gland.

Nine cases of a previously undescribed benign soft tissue tumor are reported. They were composed of variable amounts of benign smooth muscle and mature adipose tissue. Patient ages ranged from 28 to 73 years. The presence of nonneoplastic mature striated muscle, ie, striated muscle heteroplasia, is described in the proximal stumps of the round ligaments of the uterus. It was an incidental finding in 30 (2.8%) of 1064 surgical specimens studied without clinical or pathologic significance. It is deemed to represent aberrant persistence, differentiation, and maturation of gubernacular rhabdomyoblasts, which normally involute in female fetuses. The reasons for its sporadic occurrence in normal adult women are unknown.

A method for arterial tree mapping that can be used in cadaver soft tissue is presented. In situ angiograms and photographs are supplemented with profile angiograms of relatively narrow bands of tissue from the removed specimen. The enlarged prayer nodules from five patients were aspirated for cytologic studies. The fine needle aspiration yielded a cheesy material that showed keratin plaques and hair fragments. Black stain may develop on the coronal surfaces of human teeth, and this type of stain is common in the Hong Kong Chinese population. The present study was undertaken to ascertain if the deposit conforms in composition to the black stain found elsewhere, and to describe its ultrastructure using the scanning electron microscope. Neurons of the lateral part of the ventral lateral geniculate nucleus in the microphthalmic rat were examined by the Golgi-Cox method. These neurons were divided into the same three types as normal neurons. However, the number of branches and the length of primary dendrites of these neurons were fewer and shorter, and the size of their perikarya was smaller, compared with normal cases.

Fetomaternal hemorrhage and abruptio placentae may occur concurrently. A prospective study was done to determine the incidence of fetomaternal hemorrhage in noncatastrophic cases of abruptio placentae consistent with sonographic findings. Significant fetomaternal hemorrhage was found in 75% of noncatastrophic cases. Implications of conservative management of abruptio placentae with fetomaternal hemorrhage are discussed.
