You Don't Know What You Don't Know: Using Nominal Group Technique to Identify and Prioritize Education Topics for Regional Hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Our 121-bed children's hospital is a quaternary care referral center for a 33-county region. Referring hospitals asked for Pediatric Acute Care Education Sessions (PACES). To determine which topics to prioritize for these sessions, nominal group technique (NGT) methods were used to obtain stakeholder-prioritized consensus on education topics. METHODS: Five NGT sessions were conducted over 6 weeks at referring hospitals throughout central and northern California. Each session lasted ∼90 minutes and engaged a diverse multidisciplinary group of stakeholders. At these sessions, stakeh

Program Evaluation of an Adolescent Intervention Program: Substance Use Education Program for At-Risk Adolescents.

In the United States, approximately 20 million individuals, age 12 and older, have a substance use disorder (SUD), with an average age of first-time use at 13 years old. Evidence has shown that many SUDs begin in adolescence, and involvement with the legal system can ensue. Adolescents with first-time drug and alcohol arrests can be referred to an Adolescent Intervention Program (AIP) as an alternative to jailtime from the juvenile court system. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the effectiveness of an AIP, a faith-based drug and alcohol prevention program for ado

Improving ALS Clinic Care Through Experience-Based Co-Design: A Participatory Action Research Study.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Multidisciplinary clinics (MDCs) are the standard of care for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), yet little is known about how well they meet patient and care partner needs, or how stakeholder engagement can be used to strengthen these services. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of people living with ALS (pALS), care partners (cALS), and staff in an ALS MDC to identify care gaps and collaboratively develop improvement strategies. METHODS: We conducted a six-stage experience-based co-design (EBCD) study comprising narrative interviews with pALS, cALS, an

Prioritisation of where and when to initiate a lifestyle intervention to reduce cardiometabolic disease risk in high-risk pregnant and postpartum women: A pre-implementation mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Experiencing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and preterm birth (PTB) increases women's risk of future type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Pregnancy and postpartum present ideal opportunities to intervene through lifestyle management and risk awareness to prevent or delay the onset of cardiometabolic pregnancy complications and future cardiometabolic disease. Designing interventions aligning with the needs and priorities of stakeholders is a critical first step in developing acceptable int

Ethical Issues in Normothermic Regional Perfusion in Controlled Organ Donation After Determination of Death by Circulatory Criteria: A Scoping Review.

Normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) is a surgical technique that can improve the quality and number of organs recovered for donation after the determination of death by circulatory criteria. Despite its promise, adoption of NRP has been hindered because of unresolved ethical issues. To inform stakeholders, this scoping review provides an impartial overview of the major ethical controversies surrounding NRP. We undertook this review according to a modified 5-step methodology proposed by Arksey and O'Malley. Publications were retrieved through MEDLINE and Embase. Gray literature was sourced fr

Stakeholders' perceptions of the trends in contraceptive prevalence rate and total fertility rate in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Studies in Ghana have reported discrepancies between trends in Total Fertility Rate (TFR) and Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR). Yet, there is limited empirical literature on stakeholders' perceptions on the trends in CPR and TFR in Ghana. We, therefore, examined the perceptions of key stakeholders about the documented trends in CPR and TFR in Ghana. METHODS: We adopted an exploratory (qualitative) research design with a qualitative approach of data collection from stakeholders in Ghana, focusing on the trends of the TFR and CPR. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitati

Diagnostic pathways for obstructive sleep apnoea in the Australian community: observations from pharmacy-based CPAP providers.

PURPOSE: Models for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are evolving in many countries to meet public demand. In Australia, the unregulated sleep industry does not provide a framework to govern or review emerging pathways in the community. The objectives of this study were to (1) describe current diagnostic pathways for OSA in Australia as reported by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) providers in community pharmacies and (2) obtain stakeholder feedback on pathways and identify potential areas for practice improvement. METHODS: Semi-structured telephone interviews were co

Protocol for a qualitative pilot study to explore ethical issues and stakeholder trust in the use of normothermic regional perfusion in organ donation in Canada.

INTRODUCTION: The process of controlled organ donation after circulatory determination of death (cDCDD) results in ischaemic injury to organs and leads to poorer outcomes in organ recipients. Although not yet used in Canada, normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) is a perfusion technology used postmortem with cDCDD donors to selectively restore perfusion of oxygenated blood to target organs in situ, reversing ischaemic injury and improving organ viability and post-transplant outcomes. However, NRP poses significant ethical challenges. To preserve trust in deceased donation, these ethical challe

Health Care Leaders' Perspectives on the Maryland All-Payer Model.

IMPORTANCE: Since 2014, all hospitals in Maryland have operated under an all-payer global budget system. Hospital global budgets have gained renewed attention as a strategy for constraining cost growth, improving patient outcomes, and preserving health care access in rural and underserved communities. Lessons from the implementation of the Maryland All-Payer Model (MDAPM) may have implications for policy makers, payers, and hospitals in other settings seeking to adopt global budgets or other value-based payment models. OBJECTIVE: To examine perspectives on the implementation of the MDAPM amon

Findings from the patch augmented rotator cuff surgery (PARCS) feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: A rotator cuff tear is a common disabling shoulder problem. Symptoms include pain, weakness, lack of mobility and sleep disturbance. Many patients require surgery to repair the tear; however, there is a high failure rate. There is a pressing need to improve the outcome of rotator cuff surgery. The use of patch augmentation to provide support to the healing process and improve patient outcomes holds new promise. Different materials (e.g. human/animal skin or intestine tissue, and completely synthetic materials) and processes (e.g. woven or a mesh) have been used to produce patches.

DILEMMAS OF COMMUNITY-DIRECTED MASS DRUG ADMINISTRATION FOR LYMPHATIC FILARIASIS CONTROL: A QUALITATIVE STUDY FROM URBAN AND RURAL TANZANIA.

There has in recent years been a growing interest in the social significance of global health policy and associated interventions. This paper is concerned with neglected tropical disease control, which prescribes annual mass drug administration to interrupt transmission of, among others, lymphatic filariasis. In Tanzania, this intervention is conducted through community-directed distribution, which aims to improve drug uptake by promoting community participation and local ownership in the intervention. However, the average uptake of drugs often remains too low to achieve the intended interrupt

Indonesian Stakeholders' Perspectives on Warning Signs and Beliefs about Suicide.

The suicide rate in Indonesia is considered low among Asian countries, but the underreporting rate is at a staggering 303%, and the latest reports suggest an increase in suicidal behaviour, particularly among young people. As a multicultural country, Indonesia has a complex system of beliefs about suicide. Thus, various aspects specific to Indonesia must be considered in understanding and preventing suicide. This paper explores Indonesian stakeholders' perspectives through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. A total of 9 participants were individually interviewed, and 42 we
