Neuron connections of eye dominance columns in the visual cortex were studied in kittens at age 5-6 months with experimental strabismus induced on days 13-16 of life (by tenotomy of the medial ocular muscle). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of strabismus surgery on nystagmus and visual acuity in patients with oculocutaneous albinism.
METHODS: We conducted a non-concurrent retrospective study of 13 Puerto Rican patients with all types of oculocutaneous albinism who underwent strabismus surgery. Patients underwent genetic linkage analysis to reach a final oculocutaneous albinism classification prior to surgery. A new method of color division of the visual fields based on polarized light interference is described. A new method for diploptic therapy of strabismus is developed, based on the above principle and possessing numerous advantages. The method was used in 38 patients with binocular disorders of various severity; binocular function improved in 18. The method is particularly effective in the patients with correct position of the eyes with bifoveal fusion on the synaptophore and parallel color test vision and in the patients with binocular vision and amblyobinopia.

PURPOSE: To determine the influence of underlying visual system disorders on the risk of developing strabismus in children with congenital nystagmus.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 82 cases of congenital nystagmus from a pediatric ophthalmology referral practice.
RESULTS: Strabismus was found in 50% of children with congenital nystagmus. The prevalence of strabismus was 82% in children with bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia, 53% in patients with albinism, 36% in children with congenital retinal dystrophies, and 17% in children with idiopathic congenital nystagmus.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the development of refractive error and axial length in a primate model of sensory strabismus and nystagmus.
METHODS: Four macaque monkeys had alternating tarsorraphy beginning within 24 hours of birth. One eye was closed for 25 days, and when it opened, the second eye immediately was closed for the next 25 days.
