Human Milk Oligosaccharides versus Streptococcus: How a Human-Made Natural Product Protects Us from Pathogens.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a Gram-positive bacterium that colonizes the lower gastrointestinal tract, and in females, the urogenital tract, in up to 30% of healthy adults. However, GBS is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in newborns due to ascending infection of the womb or by neonatal acquisition during vaginal passage. GBS neonatal disease manifests as pneumonia, sepsis, or meningitis, and an estimated 4 million newborns die each year globally. This commentary reflects on recent work by Mejia and colleagues (M. E. [Bacteremia caused by group A and B beta-hemolytic Streptococcus in adults].

In order to know the epidemiological, clinical and evolutive characteristics of bacteriemia caused by beta-hemolytic streptococci groups A and B, a retrospective investigation was undertaken of 48 bacteremic episodes observed in adult patients for 10 years (1985-1994). Twenty-two episodes were caused by Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GAS) and 26 by Group B beta-hemolytic streptococci (GBS). Patients with GAS bacteremia (GASB) had a lower mean age than patients with GBS bacteremia (GBSB) (p = 0.03). Infection with immunodeficiency virus was more common in patients with GASB than in patien

Macrolide resistance trends in beta-hemolytic streptococci in a tertiary Korean hospital.

Group B Streptococcus and the risk of perinatal morbidity and mortality following term labor.

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus) colonizes the genital tract of approximately 20% of pregnant women. In the absence of intervention, approximately 1% of infants born to colonized mothers exhibit a clinical infection. This has led to implementation of screening and intervention in the form of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis in many countries, including the United States. However, screening has not been introduced in a substantial minority of other countries because of the absence of supportive level 1 evidence, the very large number needed to treat to prevent 1 case, and conc…

Ceftibuten-containing agar plate for detecting group B streptococci with reduced penicillin susceptibility (PRGBS).

Penicillins remain first-line agents for treatment of group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae; GBS) infections; however, several reports have confirmed the existence of GBS with reduced penicillin susceptibility (PRGBS). Because no selective agar plates for detection of PRGBS are available to date, in this investigation, we developed the selective agar plate for detection of PRGBS. We used 19 genetically well-confirmed PRGBS isolates and 38 penicillin-susceptible GBS isolates identified in Japan. For preparation of trial PRGBS-selective agar plates, we added 1 of antimicrobial agents (…

Naturally occurring disseminated group B streptococcus infections in postnatal rats.

Group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae, GBS) is a gram-positive commensal and occasional opportunistic pathogen of the human vaginal, respiratory, and intestinal tracts that can cause sepsis, pneumonia, or meningitis in human neonates, infants, and immunosuppressed persons. We report here on a spontaneous outbreak of postnatal GBS-associated disease in rats. Ten of 26 (38.5%) 21- to 24-d-old rat pups died or were euthanized due to a moribund state in a colony of rats transgenic for the human diphtheria toxin receptor on a Munich-Wistar-Frömter genetic background. Four pups had intrale…

Evaluation of a real-time fluorescent PCR assay for rapid detection of Group B Streptococci in neonatal blood.

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus: GBS) is the major causative agent of neonatal sepsis. Neonates at risk for GBS infections are empirically administered broad-spectrum antibiotics for at least 48 h pending blood culture results. A rapid assay to expedite detection of GBS would facilitate initiation of specific antibiotic therapy. Conversely, expeditious proof of absence of infection will avoid unnecessary antibiotic use. Using the LightCycler, we evaluated a hybridization probe polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay to detect GBS-specific cfb gene target DNA sequence in blood spe…

Validation of +tiDx: a point-of-care diagnostic system for Gram-positive bovine mastitis.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid and accurate detection and identification of bovine mastitis-causing pathogens are crucial for treatment decisions and dairy farm management. In this work, we developed and validated a diagnostic system for point-of-care applications that may properly detect and identify Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, non-aureus staphylococci, and other Streptococcus species, which are all considered as relevant pathogenic species for bovine mastitis in Colombia. The diagnostic system is supported by a mobile application, +tiApp, that facilitates result interpretation, dig…

Interleukin-6 gets involved in response to bacterial infection and promotes antibody production in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Interleukin 6 (IL-6), a pleiotropic cytokine, plays an important role in humoral immune response, not only inducing the differentiation of B cells into plasma cells, but also promoting antibody-secreting cells (ASCs) to produce antibodies. In this study, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) IL-6 (OnIL-6) was identified and characterized at expression level in response to bacterial infection and promotion of antibody production. The open reading frame of OnIL-6 ORF is consisted of 663 bp encoding a polypeptide of 220 amino acids. The deduced OnIL-6 protein contained an IL-6/G-CSF family signatu

Host-Pathogen Interactions during Female Genital Tract Infections.

Dysbiosis in the female genital tract (FGT) is characterized by the overgrowth of pathogenic bacterial, fungal, or protozoan members of the microbiota, leading to symptomatic or asymptomatic infections. In this review, we discuss recent advances in studies dealing with molecular mechanisms of pathogenicity factors of Gardnerella vaginalis, Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Streptococcus agalactiae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Trichomonas vaginalis, and Candida spp., as well as their interactions with the host and microbiota in the various niches of the FGT. A death due to subinvolution of the uteroplacental arteries.

A 19-year-old G1P0 Caucasian woman died 8 days postpartum because of the subinvolution of the uteroplacental arteries. Microscopic examination of the placental implantation site revealed large, dilated spiral arteries containing partially occluding thrombi in the superficial myometrium. The presence of cytotrophoblasts within and surrounding the spiral arteries was confirmed by low molecular weight cytokeratin immunohistochemistry. Infection of the Cesarean section incision site was demonstrated by the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae Group B in the wound as well as…

[The level of implementation of the prevention program of group B Streptococcal infection during pregnancy and in newborns in accordance to the recommendations of the Polish Gynaecological Society - questionnaire survey].

BACKGROUND: Maternal colonization of Streptococcus agalactiae in pregnancy constitute an important clinical problem, that may result in serious consequences, especially for the newborn. Streptococcus agalactiae is a gram-positive beta-hemolytic streptococci belonging to the serological group B (GBS). According to recent data the GBS is found in 10-30% of healthy women, and the carriage of pathogen is usually asymptomatic. In order to minimize the risk of vertical transmission of the infection to the newborn during the labor, the Polish Society of Gynecology (PTG) has introduced the guidelines …

Antibacterial Activity of a Fractionated Pistacia lentiscus Oil Against Pharyngeal and Ear Pathogens, Alone or in Combination With Antibiotics.
