The role of SKA2 on affective disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide behavior: systematic review and in silico analysis.

Genes involved in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis may be a robust biomarker of psychiatric disorders. Genetic polymorphisms of the SKA2 gene are associated with several behavioral disorders. In this study, we embarked on a systematic search of all possible reports of genetic association with SKA2 and affective disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicide behavior; the functional consequences of nsSNPs were explored through computational tools with an in silico analysis. Eight eligible articles were included. Our study identified that SKA2 did not show association with risk of

Prevalence of major depressive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder among first-time sleep center attendees.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders and psychiatric disorders stand in a bidirectional relationship. Sleep complaints are prominent in populations with psychiatric disorders, especially amongst people with major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Consultations at sleep clinics offer opportunities to screen psychiatric disorders and to propose primary psychiatric care. METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted on 755 patients making their first visit to sleep clinic, with 574 seeking consultation for suspected obstructive sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS), 1

Post-traumatic stress disorder and drug use disorder: examination of aetiological models in a Swedish population-based cohort.

Background: There are two primary phenotypic models of comorbidity between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and drug use disorder (DUD), i.e. self-medication (PTSD precedes and causes DUD) and susceptibility (DUD precedes and causes PTSD). We sought to clarify the longitudinal relationship between PTSD and DUD, while examining sex differences.Method: We used approximately 23 years of longitudinal data from Swedish population registries to conduct two complementary statistical models: Cox proportional hazard models (N ≈ 1.5 million) and a cross-lagged panel model (N ≈ 3.8 million). Results:

Prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms among patients with mental disorder during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused extensive public health concerns, posing significant challenges to healthcare services. One particular area of concern is the mental health of patients with mental disorder, who are often a neglected group. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of, and associated factors for symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among patients with mental disorder in China during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Self-reported questionnaires were distributed to patients in four psychiatric hospitals in Beijing, China, bet

Parental post-traumatic stress disorder and increased risk of chronic pain conditions and major psychiatric disorders in their offspring.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have higher risk of chronic pain symptoms. It remains unknown whether risk of chronic pain symptoms occurs in the offspring of parents with PTSD. This study aimed to explore the risk of chronic pain conditions and depression in the offspring of parents with PTSD. METHODS: Between 1996 and 2011, we included subjects whose parents had PTSD and controls with parents without PTSD or any major psychiatric disorders (MPDs) from the Taiwan National Health Research Database. The controls (1:10) were mat

The Impact of Co-occurring Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Use Disorders on Craving: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

The frequent co-occurrence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUDs) leads to manifestations of both conditions that are more severe and more resistance to treatment than single disorders. One hypothesis to explain this synergy is the impact of intrusive memories on craving which, in turn, increases the risk of relapse among patients with substance use disorders. The aim of this systematic review is to examine this possibility by assessing the impact of PTSD and its symptoms on craving among dual disorder patients. Using PRISMA criteria, four databases were co

Optimizing screening for depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder in inpatient addiction treatment: A preliminary investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Substance use disorders (SUD) are frequently comorbid with other psychiatric conditions, but a comprehensive diagnostic assessment is often not feasible clinically. Efficient psychometrically-validated screening tools exist for commonly comorbid conditions, but cutoff accuracies have typically not been evaluated in addiction treatment settings. This study examined the performance of several widely-used screening measures in relation to diagnostic status from a clinical interview to identify and validate cutoff scores in an inpatient SUD treatment setting. METHOD: Participants were

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Secondary to Manic Episodes with Hypersexuality in Bipolar Disorder: A Case Study of Forensic Psychotherapy.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can arise as a secondary condition to a primary bipolar disorder, an aspect which may be overlooked by clinicians and thus may contribute to the exacerbation of the bipolar disorder itself. The occurrence of manic symptoms can have a traumatic impact on a patient unaware of her/his diagnosis, especially during symptom remission. The present work describes a clinical case of a woman with type-1 bipolar disorder and PTSD secondary to previous manic episodes characterized by hypersexuality. This clinical case is characterized by the fact that the patient had

Comorbidity of developmental trauma disorder (DTD) and post-traumatic stress disorder: findings from the DTD field trial.

Background: Developmental trauma disorder (DTD) has been proposed to describe the biopsychosocial sequelae of exposure to interpersonal victimization in childhood that extend beyond the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Objective: To characterize the psychopathology comorbid with DTD and to determine whether this comorbidity is distinct from, and extends beyond, comorbidities of PTSD. Method: DTD was assessed by structured interview, and probable Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition (DSM-IV) psychiatric disorders were identified with screening mod

Dissemination of exposure in the treatment of anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder among German cognitive behavioural therapists.

The efficacy of exposure is beyond doubt, which is reflected in guidelines recommending its application in the treatment of anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research suggests exposure to be underutilized in clinical practice in the United States and Europe. A systematic investigation of the dissemination of exposure in Germany is lacking. The present study examined the dissemination and application frequency of exposure among German cognitive behavioural therapists working in routine care. In an online-based survey, 331 psychotherapists provided information on treat

Trauma-related altered states of consciousness in post-traumatic stress disorder patients with or without comorbid dissociative disorders.

Background: The four-dimensional ('4-D') model has been proposed as a theoretical framework to understand and delineate trauma-related dissociative experiences, categorizing symptoms into trauma-related altered states of consciousness (TRASC) and normal waking consciousness (NWC), which occur along four dimensions: time, thought, body and emotion. Objective: The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the validity of this model in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with and without comorbid dissociative disorders. Method: The predictions of the 4-D model were tested in

Differentiating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from major depression (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Questions about the differential diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have been raised since this category was reformulated in DSM-III (APA, 1980). Clinicians have reported difficulties distinguishing PTSD from other categories, particularly from Major Depressive and Generalized Anxiety Disorders (MDD and GAD). Diagnostic validity can be established in several ways (e.g., through clinical descriptive studies, laboratory experiments, family history studies, etc.). In this paper, we describe one approach to validation thus far not applied to PTSD: This approach centers directly on

Traumatic Events, Psychopathology, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in the General Community and First Responders: Presence of Symptoms and Associated Factors.

Most individuals experience at least one traumatic event during their lifetime, which can lead to the development of psychopathological symptoms and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). First responders (e.g., police officers, firefighters, emergency medical professionals) are exposed to traumatic events daily, making them particularly vulnerable to developing such symptoms. Using an online questionnaire, this study aimed to compare self-reported exposure to traumatic events and the presence of psychopathological and PTSD symptoms between a sample from the general community (n = 137) and fir

Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Their Influence on Development and Pattern of Alzheimer's Disease Pathology in Later Life.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are potential risk factors for the development of dementia including Alzheimer's disease (AD) in later life. The findings of studies investigating this question are inconsistent though. OBJECTIVE: To investigate if these inconsistencies are caused by the existence of subgroups with different vulnerability for AD pathology and if these subgroups are characterized by atypical tau load/atrophy pattern. METHODS: The MRI and PET data of 89 subjects with or without previous TBI and/or PTSD from the DoD ADNI database

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and its Imaging Features in Patients With Depression, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a type of noninvasive neurostimulation used increasingly often in clinical medicine. While most studies to date have focused on TMS's ability to treat major depressive disorder, it has shown promise in several other conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). As different treatment protocols are often used across studies, the ability to predict patient outcomes and evaluate immediate and long-term changes using imaging becomes increasingly important. Several imaging features, such as thickness, connecte

Early Interventions to Prevent Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Youth after Exposure to a Potentially Traumatic Event: A Scoping Review.

The worldwide occurrence of potentially traumatic events (PTEs) in the life of children is highly frequent. We aimed to identify studies on early mental health interventions implemented within three months of the child/adolescent's exposure to a PTE, with the aim of reducing acute post-traumatic symptoms, decreasing long term PTSD, and improving the child's adjustment after a PTE exposure. The search was performed in PubMed and EMBASE databases resulting in twenty-seven articles meeting our inclusion criteria. Most non-pharmacological interventions evaluated had in common two complementary com

Traumatic Childbirth and Birth-Related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in the Time of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Birth-related post-traumatic stress disorder occurs in 4.7% of mothers. No previous study focusing precisely on the stress factors related to the COVID-19 pandemic regarding this important public mental health issue has been conducted. However, the stress load brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic could have influenced this risk. METHODS: We aimed to estimate the prevalence of traumatic childbirth and birth-related PTSD and to analyze the risk and protective factors involved, including the risk factors related to the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a prospective cohort study of w

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Is Associated with Neuropsychological Outcome but Not White Matter Integrity after Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

The aim of this study was to examine neuropsychological functioning and white matter integrity, in service members and veterans (SMVs) after mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), with versus without post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Participants were 116 U.S. military SMVs, prospectively enrolled from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (Bethesda, MD), who had sustained an MTBI (n = 86) or an injury without TBI (i.e., Injured Control [IC]; n = 30). Effects of mild traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder on resting-state default mode network connectivity.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common outcomes for service members. Abnormal connectivity within neural networks has been reported in the resting brain of mTBI and PTSD patients, respectively; however, the potential role of PTSD in changes to neural networks following injury has not been studied in detail. Using a data-driven approach, the present analysis aimed to elucidate resting state functional connectivity in the default mode network (DMN) in those with mTBI only and those with comorbid mTBI and PTSD. A secondary analysis focused on disti
