Interventions for reducing post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms among nurses: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Nurses often experience traumatic events in high-pressure clinical environments. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can negatively affect emotional well-being, concentration, clinical judgment, and workforce stability among nurses. PURPOSE: To assess the effectiveness of various psychological and behavioral interventions designed to reduce PTSD and related symptoms among nurses. METHODS: A literature search across five databases identified 24 eligible studies. Effect-direction plots and one-sided binomial sign tests were used to examine the consistency and significance of inte

Adjunct psychomotor trauma exposure in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder: a case series.

Introduction: Psychotraumatic disorders, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), have been a major public health issue for many years. However, many patients remain resistant to treatment, with significant levels of residual symptoms, a high dropout rate, and poor functional prognosis despite a reduction in psychotraumatic symptoms. The physical impact of trauma might influence treatment response. We have developed an integrative method for patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this study, we report the cases of 16 successive patients with PTSD treated w

A multi-omic approach implicates novel protein dysregulation in post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common and disabling psychiatric disorder. PTSD involves multiple brain regions and is often comorbid with other psychiatric disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD). Recent genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified many PTSD risk loci and transcriptomics studies of postmortem brain have found differentially expressed genes associated with PTSD cases. In this study, we integrated genome-wide measures across modalities to identify convergent molecular effects in the PTSD brain. METHODS: We performed tandem mass spec

Decreased DTI-APLS correlated with cognitive impairment in veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a risk for cognitive impairment with underlying mechanism unresolved. Our study aimed to evaluate the glymphatic function in veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and to explore associations between glymphatic function, sleep patterns, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers (Aβ, t-tau, p-tau), and cognitive impairment. In our study, we included 43 Vietnam War veterans with PTSD and 43 controls. Diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) was calculated to reflect glymphatic function. Multiple linear regressions a

Effect of oxytocin on cardiovascular modulation in normal and post-traumatic stress disorder model rats.

Oxytocin (OXT) is associated with cardioprotective effects and shows to alleviate symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study investigates blood pressure and electrocardiographic (ECG) parameters in anesthetized normal rats utilizing intravenous (iv) and intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of oxytocinergic agents. We also assessed the effects of cervical vagotomy on the cardiovascular responses to iv OXT. Furthermore, we compared the cardiovascular responses to iv OXT in PTSD model rats with those in normal controls. The mean arterial pressure (MAP), mean heart rate

Prevalence and predictors of post-traumatic stress disorder following major trauma in New Zealand.

PURPOSE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a known potential sequel to physical trauma. PTSD in trauma patients has seldom been studied in New Zealand. This study aimed to measure the prevalence and predictors of PTSD among hospitalized trauma patients in Christchurch, New Zealand. METHODOLOGY: Participants who presented to Christchurch Hospital and were included in the NZ Major Trauma Registry (Injury Severity Score ≥ 12) were recruited. Eligible participants were mailed a questionnaire containing a series of self-reported 5-point rating scales that assess DSM-5 symptoms of PTSD. Base

Cost Effectiveness of Adjunctive Neurofeedback vs. Psychotherapy or Pharmacotherapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Background: Neurofeedback shows promise as an adjunctive therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but its cost effectiveness has not been studied. Objectives: To assess the cost and effectiveness of neurofeedback plus other therapies (NF + OT) vs. guideline therapies alone. Methods: TreeAge software was used to develop Markov models comparing NF + OT therapy to psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy over 1-3 years. Costs were derived from Medicare rates and literature. Effectiveness was measured using CAPS-5 score reductions converted to quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) using regressio

Sex differences in the coherence of PCL5 and CAPS-5 assessments for post-traumatic stress disorder.

The clinician-administered Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) scale (CAPS-5) is a clinical tool for the diagnosis and assessment of the severity of PTSD symptoms based on DSM-5, while the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) is a self-assessment tool. Both assessments are widely used, but CAPS-5 is time and resource intensive, while PCL-5 is quicker. Although PCL-5 has been validated for PTSD symptom severity assessment, PCL-5 scores tend to show higher symptom severity and sometimes leading to higher prevalence of PTSD diagnosis. The contributing factors for such discrepancies in reporting are

Abnormality and mediating effects of brain morphological similarity network in post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a polygenic disorder with complex genetic mechanisms. This study leveraged the fusion of multiple morphology to construct the morphological similarity network (MSN), and combined polygenic risk score (PRS), aiming to systematically explore structural changes in the brain due to PTSD, and the regulatory effects of genetic risk factors on brain structure. METHODS: 200 adults who had lost their sole child, including 52 PTSD and 148 nonPTSD, and 45 healthy controls received structural MR scans and psychological assessments, and had peripheral v

Autistic traits in childhood and post-traumatic stress disorder as young adults: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the higher prevalence of childhood traumatic experiences and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in autistic adults, research on trauma-related psychopathology and autistic traits in young people is lacking. This study examined if high autistic traits in childhood predispose individuals to traumatic experiences, the development of PTSD and general psychopathology, and greater functional impairment by age 18, in both the general population and a subsample of trauma-exposed young people. METHODS: Data were utilised from the Environmental Risk (E-Risk) Longitudinal Twin Stu

Digital-Based Interventions for Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Systematic Literature Review.

Research has shown that complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) differs from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on core symptoms relating to the individual's sense of self, and this has driven the need for treatment approaches to address these specific features of cPTSD. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the increased use of digital-based interventions (DBIs) to treat mental illnesses, including trauma-related disorders. However, while evidence for the use of DBIs for PTSD has previously been synthesized, the current review is the first synthesis of research on the use of DBIs for cPT

Adolescent patient with post traumatic stress disorder due atypical stressor: Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterised by intrusive, anxious, and avoidant symptoms that are triggered after a stressful experience and affect the mood. The definition of a stressor that generates PTSD has been debated in recent years, as a clinical picture compatible with the disorder can occur after exposure to stressors that do not meet the criteria A1 of the DSM V; these stressors have been defined in the literature as "of low magnitude, uncommon, unusual or atypical". CLINICAL CASE: We present the clinical case of a paediatric patient who developed PTSD afte
