A 27-year-old patient contracted a Coxsackie virus A9 meningitis at 33 weeks gestational age. Two weeks later a macerated female stillborn infant was delivered. The placenta showed a diffuse perivillous fibrin deposition with villous necrosis and inflammatory cell infiltration and yielded Coxsackie virus A9 on culture. Post-mortem examination of the fetus showed only minimal inflammatory changes in the cardiac connective tissue and the subarachnoid space.

Kaolin-induced hydrosyringomyelia in dogs has been investigated by radioisotope ventriculography using both cerebrospinal fluid radioassay and scintigraphy. The hydromyelic central canal can be differentiated from the spinal subarachnoid space by scintigraphy, Serial studies show that hydromyelia arises rapidly to decompress the associated hydrocephalus in surviving animals. Syringomyelia, after a delayed onset, originates from the enlarged central canal. Radioisotope ventriculography may be a useful clinical aid in the diagnosis of hydrosyringomyelia.

A case of supratentorial intracerebral cyst, containing ectopic plexus, is discussed. The cyst had no communication with the ventricular system or subarachnoid space. The cyst wall was lined in part by flattened or cuboidal epithelium and in part by glia. Fronds of choroid plexus protruded into the cavity of the cyst in one part. The preoperative and postoperative computerized tomography scans are presented and the operative findings are discussed. The management of such cases is reviewed.

Computed tomography (C. T.) in tuberculous meningitis has revealed a spectrum of findings (cerebral necrosis, subdural hydroma or hematoma, ventricular volume, enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces, tuberculomata, ischemic infarct, position of catheter in the ventricles). C. T. is a method of value in determining location and extent of lesions, degree of hydrocephalus and helpful in evaluating effectiveness of antituberculous therapy. Findings in ten patients are reported.

A 38-year-old male presented with a posterior fossa ependymoma with unusual extension from the cerebellopontine angle to the pineal region. Magnetic resonance imaging clearly demonstrated that these two components were continuous through the right ambient cistern. Computed tomography using a bone algorithm revealed enlargement of the right internal auditory canal. This case suggests that ependymoma can extend anywhere within the subarachnoid space along the path of least resistance.

We report the case of a 72-year-old Japanese woman with moyamoya disease (MMD). She experienced her first intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) at the age of 32 years, and had nine ICHs and/or intraventricular hemorrhages during the following 40 years. Cerebral angiograms and vascular pathologies at autopsy confirmed that the patient suffered from MMD. In the past, patients with injuries of the cervical spine and spinal cord have been diagnosed by means of myelography and polytomography. Primary intracranial sarcomas are very rare and aggressive tumors. A case of a 40-year-old woman with primary leptomeningeal sarcomatosis is presented. Initially her clinical symptoms resembled those of a pseudo tumor cerebri. Neuroimaging did not allow establishing a diagnosis of leptomeninges neoplastic infiltration. In a series of 176 prospectively studied patients who survived for at least 24 hours after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, 39 had at least one computerized tomography (CT)-proven rebleed within 4 weeks after the first rupture. We present a case of increased fluid-attenuated inversion recovery signal intensity in the subarachnoid spaces on 6-hour delayed enhanced MR imaging in a patient with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) in the setting of acute hypertensive encephalopathy. This hyperintensity was believed due to CSF gadolinium enhancement, a finding that would be anticipated in light of the suspected pathogenesis of increased microvascular permeability in PRES.
