Effectiveness of Arnica and Bromelain for Improving Ecchymosis Following Facial Plastic Surgery: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Individual studies have suggested a benefit in using Arnica and Bromelain for reducing ecchymosis following facial plastic surgery; however, the literature remains inconsistent and methodologically heterogeneous. An up-to-date review is therefore necessary to synthesize the available evidence and provide clearer guidance to clinicians and patients alike. The objective of this study was therefore to investigate the effectiveness of Arnica and Bromelain in reducing postoperative ecchymosis after facial plastic surgery. METHODS: A PRISMA-guided search of Medline, Embase, Cochrane d

Passport Not Required: A Comparison of Plastic Surgery Complications From Domestic and International Medical Tourism.

INTRODUCTION: Medical tourism, commonly defined as the practice of traveling to another country for medical care, has increased in popularity over the past decade, particularly in aesthetic surgery where high costs lead patients to seek cheaper options abroad. Although patients may save money, inherent risks to medical tourism include truncated postoperative care and limited ability to evaluate providers. When complications arise, patients present to local institutions rather than to their original surgeons. Although literature describes complications from international tourism, less is known

Plastic and reconstructive surgery in spinal sarcoma resection: a review of indications, techniques, and outcomes.

PURPOSE: Soft-tissue reconstruction following oncologic resection of spinal tumors often leaves extensive dead space vulnerable to infection, cerebrospinal fluid leak, and impaired function. En bloc resection with wide margins remains standard for disease control, but closure of these complex defects is challenging. Plastic and reconstructive surgeons (PRS) are often consulted for soft-tissue closure, yet their role in spinal sarcoma care has not been comprehensively reviewed. We aimed to (1) describe indications and timing of PRS consultation, (2) summarize reconstructive options by anatomic

Gender-Affirming Genital Masculinization: Part 3 of the Plastic Surgeon's Perspective of Gender-Affirming Surgery.

Over the last few decades, great strides have been made in surgical techniques and access to care for transgender and nonbinary individuals. An important step for many transgender patients is the ability to undergo masculinizing bottom surgery. This allows improved alignment of physical appearance with gender identity and improvement in symptoms of gender incongruence. The main options involved in transmasculine bottom surgery are metoidioplasty and total phalloplasty. The surgical decision is adapted to the patient and their preferences along with the clinical opinion of the provider. While b

Ethical Challenges for Plastic Surgery in Treating Internationally Adopted Children With Cleft Lip and Palate.

A large number of children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) were adopted to Sweden in the last decade, mainly from China. Most of the children arrived with unoperated palates and at later ages than earlier years. This article aims to present an overview of ethical challenges within the practice of international adoption of children with CLP from the perspective of plastic surgery in a welfare health care system. An overview of CLP treatment is presented, followed by a normative discussion and ethical analysis using the 4 principles of Beauchamp and Childress: non-maleficence, beneficence, auton

[Systematic investigation of surgical site infections (SSI) in plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgery (ERCS): Feedback].

Surgical site infection (SSI) in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery (ERCP) is quite uncommon compared to other surgical specialities but remains one of the main complications. The aim of our study was to provide feedback on the systematic investigation of SSI in ERCP. This is a monocentric retrospective study, including all paediatric and adult patients who have undergone ERCP surgery between 01/01/2014 and 31/12/2021. During this period, the department systematically investigated all SSI cases. Eight thousand eight hundred and seventy-eight surgical procedures were performed. The S
