Bullae and sweat gland necrosis in the differential diagnosis for Vibrio vulnificus infection in an alcoholic patient.

Bullae and sweat gland necrosis remain rare cutaneous manifestation, and these conditions can be misdiagnosed as Vibrio vulnificus infections or other soft tissue infections because of their low index of suspicion. A 46-yr-old man with a history of continued alcohol consumption presented with erythematous and hemorrhagic bullous lesions on his left arm. The patient reported that after the ingestion of clams, he slept for 12 hr in a heavily intoxicated state. Then the skin lesions started as a reddish patch that subsequently became hemorrhagic bullae. V. vulnificus infection, cellulitis, and ne…

Sleep-related sweating in obstructive sleep apnoea: association with sleep stages and blood pressure.

The aim of this study was to investigate sleep-related sweating as a symptom of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Fifteen otherwise healthy male non-smoking patients with untreated moderate-to-severe OSA underwent polysomnography, including measurements of skin and core body temperature and electrodermal activity (EDA) as an objective indicator of sweating. Evening and morning blood pressure was measured as well as catecholamines in nocturnal urine. All measurements were repeated after 3 months on successful continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment. The untreated OSA subjects had a m…

The body mass index and level of resection: predictive factors for compensatory sweating after sympathectomy.

OBJECTIVE: Compensatory sweating (CS) is the most common adverse event and the main cause of dissatisfaction among patients undergoing a VATS sympathectomy for the treatment of primary hyperhidrosis. It has been described that obese individuals experience more sweating than thinner ones. The aim of this study is to identify the Body Mass Index (BMI) and the level of resection as predictive factors for CS and its relation to levels of patient satisfaction following the procedure. METHODS: From October 1998 to June 2003, 102 patients undergoing VATS sympathectomies (51 for palmar hyperhidrosis,…

A randomised controlled trial of topical glycopyrrolate, the first specific treatment for diabetic gustatory sweating.

The treatment of gustatory sweating in diabetes mellitus is usually with oral anti-cholinergic drugs, but these frequently lead to unacceptable side effects. Glycopyrrolate is an anti-muscarinic agent that can be applied topically and is efficacious in gustatory sweating occurring in other conditions. In a double-blind placebo-controlled crossover study, we assessed the value of glycopyrrolate in 13 diabetic patients with gustatory sweating. Sweating was measured by a sweat challenge, and diaries recorded by the patients throughout the 2 weeks of each treatment period. Compared to placebo, gly…

A mechanically robust wearable sweat analysis platform with plug-and-play interconnects for continuous biomarker profiling.

Reliable electromechanical integration between disposable soft sensors and rigid hardware is crucial for wearable devices, yet physically fragile interfaces often cause severe motion artifacts and contact failures during exercise. To overcome this challenge, this study presents a mechanically robust sweat analysis platform featuring plug-and-play interconnects. Diverging from vulnerable printed inks, a scalable Flexible Printed Circuit Board (FPCB) was engineered with Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold (ENIG) terminals reinforced by a 0.1-mm Polyimide (PI) stiffener. This design ensures highly …

CCL22-producing macrophages are associated with Th1-related sweat duct inflammation in acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis (AIGA) is a rare disorder characterized by generalized loss of sweating without identifiable causes. Because few biomarkers reflect its underlying mechanisms, diagnosis at the initial visit is often difficult. Although steroid pulse therapy is widely used, approximately half of patients respond insufficiently. We therefore aimed to elucidate the immune mechanisms underlying AIGA and identify potential biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment response. METHODS: Fourteen patients with AIGA affecting more than 25% of body surface area were enr…

A Fully Integrated Wearable Sweat Sensing Patch for Online Analysis of Multiple Parkinson's Disease-Related Biomarkers.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is marked by a prolonged asymptomatic "window period" (several years). Early prediction and diagnosis during this window are crucial, as timely interventions can slow disease progression. In this study, a fully integrated wearable sweat-sensing patch capable of real-time detection of three key PD biomarkers: L-Dopa, ascorbic acid, and glucose is developed. The system includes a biomimetic microfluidic module for sedentary sweat collection, an advanced electrochemical sensing platform for biomarker analysis, on-site signal processing circuitry for data management, and c…

Relationship between sweat chloride and pulmonary function in healthy young adults - a single-center, pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The role of Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance regulator (CFTR) dysfunction in non-cystic fibrosis lung diseases, including COPD, is not well understood. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of intermediate sweat chloride levels, 30-59 mmol/L, in healthy young adults and the relationship between sweat chloride and pulmonary function. METHODS: Healthy volunteers >18 years of age were enrolled in this single center, prospective, cross-sectional pilot study. Sweat chloride testing was performed by pilocarpine iontophoresis. Study participants completed the …

Decline of kidney function is associated with lower sweat weight in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Excretion of sodium and water through the skin as sweat represents a regulatory mechanism of electrolyte- and fluid balance. Since patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) exhibit increased skin sodium content, we investigated the feasibility of sweat testing as a novel experimental tool to provide a more complete assessment of fluid- and sodium status. In this cross-sectional feasibility study, we applied pilocarpine iontophoresis to induce sweat testing in 58 patients across various stages of CKD including kidney transplant recipients and a healthy control cohort (n = 6) to investigate pos…

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid in an elderly male: A case report.

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) of the eyelid, initially misdiagnosed as a chalazion. OBSERVATIONS: A 76-year-old South-Asian male presented with a 9-month history of a painless left upper eyelid lesion. Initial ophthalmic assessment suggested presence of a chalazion that did not resolve with medical management. Examination revealed a 5.5 × 5.5 mm mass at the central left eyelid margin. The lesion transilluminated and extended over the eyelid margin, with splayed lashes but no madarosis. Histopathological examination demonstrated crib…

Encysted Tubular Sweat Gland Adenoma of the Nasal Ala: A Rare Cause for Unilateral Nasal Discharge.

Benign cutaneous apocrine sweat gland adenomas in the nose are rare. We present the novel case of a nasal ala cutaneous sweat gland lesion. A 43-year-old male presents with a one year history of a right nostril mass with intermittent clear discharge, triggered by periods of hot weather and increased humidity. Histopathological analysis post-excision revealed a solid-cystic lesion of bi-layered ducts, with snouts suggestive of apocrine secretions. Given the close relationship of tumour enlargement with heat and expression of clear liquid upon direct pressure, we postulate that the intermittent …

A skin-mountable flexible biosensor based on Cu-MOF/PEDOT composites for sweat ascorbic acid monitoring.

Continuous monitoring of sweat nutrients offers valuable insights into metabolic cycling and health levels. However, existing methods often lack adaptability and real-time capabilities. Here, we propose a skin-mountable flexible biosensor integrated with metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived composites for real-time monitoring of sweat ascorbic acid (AA) levels. The biosensor features a miniaturized, highly integrated system capable of an imperceptible, stretchable skin patch with dimensions of 16.9 × 9.9 × 0.1 mm3, ensuring conformal integration with curvilinear skin contours. The introductio…
