This study presents a comprehensive epidemiological investigation (2021–2023) across 27 districts of Assam, Northeast India, focusing on major swine viral diseases including, focusing on major swine viral diseases including African Swine Fever (ASF), Classical Swine Fever (CSF), and emerging co-infections. Spatial analysis identified Lakhimpur and Jorhat as an ASF hotspot (95% CI: (1.02–15.47); p < 0.05), showing a higher prevalence rate of 42% in older animals. None of the infections indicated statistically significant variation between male and female pigs however females had higher odd-rati…

BACKGROUND: Swine influenza A virus (IAV) reassortment with 2009 H1N1 pandemic (H1N1pdm09) virus has been documented, and new genotypes and subclusters of H3N2 have since expanded in the US swine population. An H3N2 variant (H3N2v) virus with the H1N1pdm09 matrix gene and the remaining genes of swine triple reassortant H3N2 caused outbreaks at agricultural fairs in 2011-2012.
METHODS: To assess commercial swine IAV vaccines' efficacy against H3N2 viruses, including those similar to H3N2v, antisera to three vaccines were tested by hemagglutinin inhibition (HI) assay against contemporary H3N2. …

Swine viral diseases have the capacity to cause significant losses and affect the sector's sustainability, a situation further exacerbated by the lack of antiviral drugs and the limited availability of effective vaccines. In this context, a novel point-of-care (POC) diagnostic device incorporating photonic integrated circuits (PICs), microfluidics and information, and communication technology into a single platform was developed for the field diagnosis of African swine fever (ASF) and classical swine fever (CSF). The device targets viral particles and has been validated using oral fluid and se…

BACKGROUND: In this study, we develop a standardized porcine model of distant injury plus lung bacterial inoculation to allow translational investigations of the effects of tissue injury on susceptibility to infection. This generalizable model will allow testing of immune interventions on the evolution of infection.
METHODS: A standardized liver crush (5 cm × 2.5 cm/3 kg) plus hemoperitoneum (6 mL/kg) or sham procedure was performed in 30-kg Yorkshire pigs, followed by intratracheal inoculation of bacteria ( Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae ). We then compared gross pathology, histology, lung

African swine fever (ASF) is a deadly viral disease in domestic pigs that has a large global economic impact for the swine industry. It is present in Africa, Europe, Asia, and in the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. There are no effective treatments or broadly licensed vaccines to prevent disease. Efforts to counteract ASF have been hampered because of the lack of convenient tools to engineer its etiological agent, ASF virus (ASFV), largely due to its large noninfectious genome. Here, we report the use of synthetic genomics methodology to develop a reverse genetics system for ASFV using a CRISP…

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious animal disease caused by African swine fever virus (ASFV). It is listed by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) as an animal disease subject to statutory reporting. ASFV, a large, enveloped double-stranded DNA virus with high genomic complexity, exhibits a case fatality rate of up to 100%, posing a significant threat to the global pig industry and food safety. To date, the absence of a safe commercial ASFV vaccine primarily stems from challenges in identifying immunogenic viral antigens, insufficient characterization of ASFV pathogene…

The search for sustainable energy sources has become more urgent due to the high level of pollution caused by petroleum-based products. Digestate, a byproduct of the digestion of organic waste generated during biomethane production, can be used as a biofertilizer. This compound enriches the soil and promotes the proliferation of nitrogen-fixing bacteria, which benefits sustainable agriculture. This study assessed the biofertilizer potential of digestates from two anaerobic digesters (pilot and laboratory scale) using swine carcasses and effluent. Physicochemical analyses and microbial diversit…

African swine fever (ASF), caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV), is a highly contagious and often fatal disease affecting domestic pigs and wild boars, resulting in substantial economic losses globally. The lack of commercially available vaccines or effective antiviral drugs highlights the urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies. In this study, we conducted a cell-based screening of a targeted anti-DNA virus compound library to identify inhibitors of ASFV replication. Among the candidates, Azvudine-a clinically approved nucleoside analog-demonstrated potent dose-dependent suppre…

Multiplex immunostaining (mIHC) allows the simultaneous detection of multiple antigenic targets within the same tissue section, providing a deeper understanding of spatial variation in cellular distribution. The aim of the present study is to apply this technique to examine the spatial variation of lymphocyte populations in swine lymph nodes during PCV2-SD and PRRSV lymphadenopathy compared with reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. A triple immunohistochemical stain with CD3, CD20 and IBA1 antibodies for the concurrent detection of T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes and macrophages, respectively, was perf…

Current leading managements for diverticular disease cannot prevent the recurrence of diverticulitis, bleeding and/or other complications. There is an immediate need for developing new minimal invasive therapeutic strategies to prevent and treat this disease. Through a biomechanical analysis of porcine colon with diverticular lesions, we proposed a novel adhesive patch concept aiming at mechanical reconstruction of the diseased colon wall. This study aims to evaluate the surgical feasibility (safety and efficacy) of pulmonary visceral pleura (PVP) patch therapy using a pig model of diverticulo

African swine fever virus (ASFV) adversely affects pig farming owing to its 100% mortality rate. The condition is marked by elevated body temperature, bleeding, and ataxia in domestic pigs, whereas warthogs and ticks remain asymptomatic despite being natural reservoirs for the virus. Breeding ASFV-resistant pigs is a promising solution for eradicating this disease. ASFV employs several mechanisms to deplete the host antiviral response. This review explores the interaction of ASFV proteins with innate host immunity and the various types of machinery encompassed by viral proteins that inhibit an…

Leptospirosis is a major threat to public health worldwide; however, there is no study focused on global seropositivity in pigs. In this study, we grouped publications and performed a systematic review with meta-analysis to gather data related to swine leptospirosis seropositivity published globally. The search method initially used returned a total of 1183 results, of which 20 met all predefined criteria and were therefore included in this review. Meta-analysis with general data was performed and a combined seropositivity of 21.95% was found. Seropositivity was 36.40% in South America, 34.05%…
