The sympathetic skin response located in the penis as a predictor of the response to sertraline treatment in patients with primary premature ejaculation.

INTRODUCTION: The pathologic mechanisms of primary premature ejaculation (PPE) are complex and multifactorial, and hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system is one of the mechanisms. AIM: To examine the effects of sertraline on sympathetic nervous system activity and assess the predictive value of the sympathetic skin response located in the penis (PSSR) on the response to sertraline treatment in PPE patients. METHODS: Sixty-one patients with PPE were recruited. Each received 50 mg sertraline daily for 8 weeks. Before and after the experiment, the patients were evaluated for PSSR tests…

[Important role of relationship between brain and spleen in the mechanisms of chronic pain development and maintenance in fibromyalgia].

Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by chronic generalized pain accompanied by various symptoms, such as extreme fatigue, insomnia and depression. Clinical studies have indicated the presence of psychological stress, sympathetic nervous system hyperexcitation and immune system abnormalities, as a trigger for the onset of the disease, but the contribution to the pathogenesis of the disease remains unclear. Here, we employed the repeated acid saline-induced generalized pain (AcGP) model, as an experimental mouse model of FM. In this model, the unilateral repeated acid injection into gastrocnemius…

Pharmacological mechanism of angiotensin II receptor antagonists: implications for the treatment of elevated systolic blood pressure.

Systolic hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The determinants of systolic blood pressure are peripheral resistance and arterial compliance. Arterial vasoconstriction, vascular growth and fluid retention, induced by the renin-angiotensin system directly or indirectly by enhancing sympathetic nervous system activity, are important factors in increasing peripheral resistance, decreasing arterial compliance and, consequently, elevating systolic blood pressure. Selective blockade of the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor represents a novel mechanism for interrupting th…

Idiopathic cervical dystonia and non-motor symptoms: a pilot case-control study on autonomic nervous system.

PURPOSE: Non-motor symptoms, such as sleep disturbances, fatigue, neuropsychiatric manifestations, cognitive impairment, and sensory abnormalities, have been widely reported in patients with idiopathic cervical dystonia (ICD). This study aimed to clarify the autonomic nervous system (ANS) involvement in ICD patients, which is still unclear in the literature. METHODS: We conducted a pilot case-control study to investigate ANS in twenty ICD patients and twenty age-sex-matched controls. The Composite Autonomic System Scale 31 was used for ANS clinical assessment. The laser Doppler flowmetry quan

Autonomic neurotoxicity of jellyfish and marine animal venoms.

Venoms and poisons of jellyfish and other marine animals can induce damage to the human nervous and circulatory systems. Clues to the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of these lesions can be obtained from data of human envenomations and animal experimentation. Because many investigators are unaware that marine animal venoms have autonomic actions, this paper aims to elucidate the broad antagonistic or toxic effects these compounds have on the autonomic nervous system. Marine venoms can affect ion transport of particularly sodium and calcium, induce channels or pores in neural and muscu

The role of the autonomic nerves in the control of nasal circulation.

Patients suffering from allergic or vasomotor rhinitis usually show nasal mucosal hyperaemia, engorgement, hyperrhinorrhoea and obstruction of the nasal airway. The nasal mucosa is drained by two venous systems which are anatomically and functionally separate. The nasal mucosa receives tone discharges from the sympathetic nerves but not from the parasympathetic nerves. Sympathetic nerve stimulation causes constriction of the resistance vessels via the alpha-adrenergic mechanism and constriction of the capacitance vessels via the alpha-adrenergic mechanism and some non-adrenergic and non-cholin

Is renal denervation still a treatment option in cardiovascular disease?

The role of renal sympathetic denervation (RDN) has been the topic of ongoing debate ever since the impressive initial results. The rationale of RDN is strong and supported by non-clinical studies, which lies in uncoupling the autonomic nervous crosstalk between the kidneys and the central nervous system. Since we know that cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, atrial, ventricular arrhythmias and heart failure (HF) are related to sympathetic (over)activity, modulation of the renal nerve activity appears to be a reasonable and attractive therapeutic target in these patients. This revie

Sympathetic activation: a potential link between comorbidities and COVID-19.

In coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), higher morbidity and mortality are associated with age, male gender, and comorbidities, such as chro … alance, immune/inflammatory factors, or emotional distress. Nevertheless, the potential role of the sympathetic nervous system has not yet been considered in the pathophysiology of COVID-19. In our opinion, sympathetic overactivation could represent a so-far undervalued mechanism for a vicious circle between COVID-19 and comorbidities.

Implication of altered autonomic control for orthostatic tolerance in SCI.

Neural output from the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) are integrated to appropriately control cardiovascular responses during routine activities of daily living including orthostatic positioning. Sympathetic control of the upper extremity vasculature and the heart arises from the thoracic cord between T1 and T5, whereas splanchnic bed and lower extremity vasculature receive sympathetic neural input from the lower cord between segments T5 and L2. Although the vasculature is not directly innervated by the parasympathetic nervous system, the SA node…

Cervical ganglion block attenuates the progression of pulmonary hypertension via nitric oxide and arginase pathways.

It has been recognized that the sympathetic nervous system is activated in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and abnormal sympathetic hyperactivity leads to worsening of PAH via endothelial dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to examine whether sympathetic ganglion block (SGB) can treat PAH by increasing the availability of nitric oxide (NO). PAH was induced in rats by 50 mg/kg of subcutaneous monocrotaline. After 2 weeks, daily injections of ropivacaine into the left superior cervical ganglion were repeated for 14 days (monocrotaline-SGB group). Monocrotaline group received sham S…

The interplay between the adrenergic system and obesity: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is an increasingly alarming public health problem. Emerging evidence suggests that a dysregulation of sympathetic nervous system activity, particularly related to the adrenergic system, can play a role in the pathophysiology of obesity. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review explores the complex interplay between the adrenergic system and obesity. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus were searched until June 2023 using the following Boolean expression: (obese OR obesity) AND (adrenaline OR noradrenaline OR epinephrine OR norepinephrine). No time frame or other filters we…

The role of peripheral venous distension reflex in regulating hemodynamics: mini review.

Significant volume is pooled in veins in humans and the amount is dramatically altered by various physiological stresses and diseases. Several animal and human studies demonstrated that limb venous distension evoked significant increases in blood pressure and sympathetic nerve activity (venous distension reflex, VDR). VDR has attracted much attention because of its potential to explain the still unknown mechanism of autonomic dysfunction in several diseases, which would lead to a new treatment approach. This mini review discusses accumulated evidence of VDR at this point and what should be inv

Mechanisms underpinning sympathoexcitation in hypoxia.

Sympathoexcitation is a hallmark of hypoxic exposure, occurring acutely, as well as persisting in acclimatised lowland populations and with generational exposure in highland native populations of the Andean and Tibetan plateaus. The mechanisms mediating altitude sympathoexcitation are multifactorial, involving alterations in both peripheral autonomic reflexes and central neural pathways, and are dependent on the duration of exposure. Initially, hypoxia-induced sympathoexcitation appears to be an adaptive response, primarily mediated by regulatory reflex mechanisms concerned with preserving sys

Site-specific autonomic vasomotor responses and their interactions in rat gingiva.

Blood flow in the gingiva, comprising the interdental papilla as well as attached and marginal gingiva, is important for maintaining of gingival function and is modulated by risk factors such as stress that may lead to periodontal disease. Marked blood flow changes mediated by the autonomic (parasympathetic and sympathetic) nervous system may be essential for gingival hemodynamics. However, differences in autonomic vasomotor responses and their functional significance in different parts of the gingiva are unclear. We examined the differences in autonomic vasomotor responses and their interacti

Pivotal role of the sympathetic nerves of the human heart in mental stress responses and triggered cardiovascular catastrophes.

Mental stress can trigger cardiac catastrophes, explicitly evident during national disasters such as earthquakes. Activation of the cardiac sympathetic outflow and inhibition of the cardiac vagus are important mediating mechanisms. This manuscript describes efforts by the Human Neurotransmitters Research Laboratory of the Baker Institute in Melbourne to develop investigative methods to study the sympathetic nerves of the human heart, and to apply these in mental stress research. With laboratory mental stress, activation of the adrenal medulla was found to occur, accompanied by a regionalized s
