Testosterone shifts the balance between sensitivity for punishment and reward in healthy young women.

Animal research has demonstrated reductions in punishment sensitivity and enhanced reward dependency after testosterone administration. In humans, elevated levels of testosterone have been associated with violent and antisocial behavior. Interestingly, extreme forms of violent and antisocial behavior can be observed in the psychopath. Moreover, it has been argued that reduced punishment sensitivity and heightened reward dependency are crucially involved in the etiology and maintenance of psychopathy. A task that has been proven to be capable of simulating punishment-reward contingencies is the

Elaboration versus suppression of cued memories: influence of memory recall instruction and success on parietal lobe, default network, and hippocampal activity.

Functional imaging studies of episodic memory retrieval consistently report task-evoked and memory-related activity in the medial temporal lobe, default network and parietal lobe subregions. Associated components of memory retrieval, such as attention-shifts, search, retrieval success, and post-retrieval processing also influence regional activity, but these influences remain ill-defined. To better understand how top-down control affects the neural bases of memory retrieval, we examined how regional activity responses were modulated by task goals during recall success or failure. Specifically,

Spontaneous cortical slow-potential shifts and choice reaction time performance.

EEGs from Fz, Cz and Pz locations (reference--right mastoid) were obtained from 36 adults. For experimental trials the Fz slow potentials (SP) were determined for a pretask interval of: a 3 sec baseline, followed by a 2.5 sec SP shift, in either negative (3.5 microV) or positive (1.5 microV) direction, and maintenance at this level for another 2.5 sec. When this criterion was met the stimuli for a choice RT task were presented (potential-related event, PRE), which required a button-press response with the right or left hand for differing stimulus configurations. During subsequent control sessi

Temporal facilitation of gaze in the presence of postural reactions triggered by sudden surface perturbations.

Saccadic reaction times can be shortened by an additional sensory modality (e.g. auditory, tactile) presented in temporal proximity to the triggering cue. Whereas somatosensory cues given by sudden perturbations of the support surface can trigger appropriate postural adjustments to maintain upright stance, it is not known how gaze executions are affected by the dual task of maintaining upright balance while redirecting gaze. It was hypothesized that the onset latency of gaze movements toward visual targets will be shortened by sudden surface perturbations following visual target shifts to prom

Commonality and diversity of impairments in inhibitory tasks after total sleep deprivation: evidence from drift diffusion model.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the effects of total sleep deprivation (TSD) on two key sub-components of inhibitory control-interference inhibition and response inhibition-and examined whether sleep deprivation affects these components through shared or distinct cognitive mechanisms. METHODS: Thirty-six healthy adults (mean age ± SD: 24.83 ± 2.16 years) completed the Flanker and Go/No-Go tasks, which respectively measure interference inhibition and response inhibition, under both normal sleep and TSD conditions. Two variants of the Drift Diffusion Model (DDM) were applied to decomp

Driver performance while texting: even a little is too much.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of text messaging and other in-car behaviors on driving performance under simple and naturalistic road conditions in a driving simulator. METHODS: Data from 28 healthy individuals (12 female) are presented. Participant age ranged from 18 to 28 (mean = 21.0). Average driving experience was 3.8 years (SD = 2.5). Participants completed a baseline loop condition in which they drove normally through a realistic virtual environment. Next, participants drove an identical loop, and at 3 specified points during this drive, participants were required to (1) complete a r

Ventral striatal dopamine modulation of different forms of behavioral flexibility.

Different forms of behavioral flexibility are facilitated by interactions between separate regions of the prefrontal cortex and their striatal outputs. However, the contribution of ventral striatal dopamine (DA) to these functions is unclear. The present study assessed the involvement of DA receptors in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) core on either between- or within-strategy shifts using operant chamber-based tasks. Strategy set-shifting required rats initially to learn a visual-cue discrimination and, on the following day, shift to using an egocentric spatial response strategy to obtain reward.

Aberrant brain activity during sad-happy emotional switching in adolescents with bipolar disorder: A functional MRI study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with bipolar disorder (BD) experience rapid mood fluctuations and cognitive disturbance. However, the underlying neural mechanism for sad-happy emotional switching remains poorly understood in adolescents with BD. METHODS: We used an emotional Go/No-Go functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) task paradigm to assess brain activity during the transition between sad and happy emotional states in 43 adolescents with BD and 18 age- and gender-matched healthy control (HC) participants. Neuroimaging data were analyzed using a general linear model with age and gender as c

Value Co-Creation Between Nurses and Generative Artificial Intelligence: A Grounded Theory Study.

BACKGROUND: The role of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in nursing is increasingly shifting from a support tool toward a collaborative partner. However, the mechanisms underlying nurse-GenAI value co-creation (N-GAIVC) remain undertheorized. AIM: To develop a theoretical framework for N-GAIVC. METHODS: This study used a Straussian grounded theory approach. Between January and April 2026, 27 clinical nurses and nurse managers from hospitals across China were recruited using purposive, snowball, and theoretical sampling. Semistructured in-depth interviews and online textual data fro

Topological data analysis of postural sway: characterizing balance control during childhood development.

BACKGROUND: Postural control matures through gradual refinement of sway organization, yet traditional CoP measures capture only variability and not the underlying geometric structure. Topological Data Analysis (TDA) offers a complementary approach by quantifying the persistence and complexity of sway dynamics. This study applied TDA to investigate developmental and task-related differences in CoP topology from childhood to adulthood. METHODS: A total of 460 healthy participants (ages 7-12 years and young adults) completed eight standing balance tasks that manipulated visual input, base of sup

Rethinking exercise dose for cognitive ageing: a systematic review and meta-analysis of physical dose and cognitive-motor demands.

UNLABELLED: Exercise is widely promoted for cognitive ageing, yet the field still lacks a clear account of what constitutes an effective "dose" when cognition is the target. From a movement-science perspective, this distinction is important because exercise interventions may differ not only in physical exposure, but also in the perceptual, attentional, coordinative and adaptive demands embedded in movement. Most trials define dose through physical exposure variables, including frequency, duration, weekly volume, intervention length and intensity. However, these metrics do not capture what the

[Evaluation of the Position Matching Accuracy for Radiological Technologists and Radiation Oncologists in Image-guided Radiation Therapy].

PURPOSE: The promotion of task-shifting and task-sharing to facilitate work style reform for physicians has enabled radiological technologists (RTs) to perform primary matching in image-guided radiotherapy. The purpose in this study is to evaluate the position matching accuracy of RTs and radiation oncologist (ROs). METHODS: Position matching was performed by four RTs and two ROs (RO-A and B). To evaluate the accuracy of the observer's position matching, five cases each were identified for the head, neck, chest, and pelvic regions in two-dimension planar images (2D/2D), and for the prostate i

From lockdown to Liberation: How inflexible thinking, obsessive-compulsive and affective symptoms shape pandemic adjustment.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted daily life, and the transition to post-pandemic living presented additional psychological challenges. Previous research shows that individuals with obsessive-compulsive traits and pre-existing mental health histories were vulnerable to adjustment difficulties, which appear to be mediated by depression, anxiety, and stress. AIMS: This study examined the relationship between post-pandemic adjustment and mental health variables in a population-based cohort during the final lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, tracking outcomes over six month

Motor synchronization and impulsivity in pediatric borderline personality disorder with and without attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: an eye-tracking study of saccade, blink and pupil behavior.

Shifting motor actions from reflexively reacting to an environmental stimulus to predicting it allows for smooth synchronization of behavior with the outside world. This shift relies on the identification of patterns within the stimulus - knowing when a stimulus is predictable and when it is not - and launching motor actions accordingly. Failure to identify predictable stimuli results in movement delays whereas failure to recognize unpredictable stimuli results in early movements with incomplete information that can result in errors. Here we used a metronome task, combined with video-based eye

The Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders Revised: Links to Academic Outcomes and Measures of EF in Young Children.

The measurement of self-regulation in young children has been a topic of great interest as researchers and practitioners work to help ensure … of math and literacy than individual EF measures assessing inhibitory control, working memory, and task shifting. Parallel process growth models indicated that children who had high initial scores on the HTKS-R also had relatively higher initial scores on math and literacy. In addition, growth in children's scores on the HTKS-R across the preschool and kinderg …

A Systematic Review of the Application of Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy to the Study of Cerebral Hemodynamics in Healthy Aging.

Positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have shown that healthy aging is associated with functional brain deterioration that preferentially affects the prefrontal cortex. This article reviews the application of an alternative method, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), to the study of age-related changes in cerebral hemodynamics and factors that influence cerebral hemodynamics in the elderly population. We conducted literature searches in PudMed and PsycINFO, and selected only English original research articles that used fNIRS to s

Methylphenidate administration reverts attentional inflexibility in adolescent rats submitted to a model of neonatal hypoxia-ischemia: Predictive validity for ADHD study.

Perinatal complications such as birth asphyxia were associated with a higher risk for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in humans. Data from a rat model of neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) have revealed inattention, impulsive behavior and dopamine (DA) disturbances in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), confirming the face validity and construct validity for ADHD study. However, the predictive validity (similar therapeutic efficacy of the pharmacological treatment available in the clinic) should be considered. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of methylphenidate (MPH) - the t

Screen and Triage by Community Extension Workers to Facilitate Screen and Treat: Task-Sharing Strategy to Achieve Universal Coverage for Cervical Cancer Screening in Nigeria.

Purpose Universal coverage of cervical cancer screening remains elusive in most low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), home to the greatest burden of this preventable disease. Implementation of a cytology-based screening strategy in these countries is challenging. Also, there is shortage of health care workers (HCWs) to implement the low-technology, cheaper, but equally effective, methods like visual inspection with acetic acid. However, the implementation of HIV programs in LMICs has introduced the innovation of task shifting and task sharing, using the community health extension workers (…

Functional magnetic resonance imaging correlates of emotion recognition and voluntary attentional regulation in depression: A generalized psycho-physiological interaction study.

BACKGROUND: Major depression is characterized by an impaired ability to evaluate and modify emotional responses as well as attention deficits, however the neural origins of these features are unresolved. The aim of the study was to investigate activation and functional connectivity changes during recognition and voluntary attentional regulation of emotion in 34 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) compared to 35 controls. METHODS: We employed an fMRI task in which participants assessed the valence or the shape of emotional stimuli. Then we analysed BOLD responses and functional conne
