The lateral aspect of the knee is stabilized by a complex arrangement of ligaments, tendons, and muscles. These structures can be demonstrated with routine spin-echo magnetic resonance (MR) imaging sequences performed in the sagittal, coronal, and axial planes. Anterolateral stabilization is provided by the capsule and iliotibial tract. Posterolateral stabilization is provided by the arcuate ligament complex, which comprises the lateral collateral ligament; biceps femoris tendon; popliteus muscle and tendon; popliteal meniscal and popliteal fibular ligaments; oblique popliteal, arcuate, and fa

Four patients are described, all of whom had tendon injuries in which the median nerve was used as a free tendon graft. Three cases involved the repair of a flexor tendon injury, and one the repair of an extensor tendon. In all cases, reconstruction of the median nerve was performed with a free sural nerve graft. The difficulty was that the palmaris longus tendon was missing in all cases. The importance of preoperative clinical testing for the presence of the palmaris longus tendon is emphasized.

Ball sports are the most frequent cause of sport injuries and 60% of all hand injuries involve the fingers. The most common injury is closed rupture of the extensor tendon of the distal interphalangeal joint (mallet finger). Rupture of the deep flexor tendon (jersey finger) occurs particularly in contact ball sports, such as rugby. Injuries of the proximal interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal joints are of high functional relevance. These injuries frequently represent complex lesions which are demanding both in diagnostics and therapy. Errors in diagnosis or insufficient treatment can lead

Pain in the dorsoulnar region of the wrist is a common complaint and may be caused by a variety of pathologies. Longitudinal tears of the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) tendon are among them, and it has recently been noted that these lesions are more frequent than previously thought. Most ECU injuries can be managed conservatively. Surgical treatment is indicated in cases of tendon rupture, especially when associated with instability or injury to the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC). In such cases, the procedure should include tendon debridement with resection of inflammatory tissue, deb

This study evaluated the association between individual fluoroquinolones and tendon disorders in Japan using two spontaneous reporting systems: the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER). Five agents-ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, and ofloxacin-were analyzed for "Muscle, tendon and ligament injuries" and "Tendon disorders." All fluoroquinolones showed positive signals in the FAERS, whereas only levofloxacin demonstrated consistent and robust associations in the Japanese subset of the FAERS

Tendon injuries are common clinical problems and are difficult to treat. In particular, the tendon-to-bone insertion site, once damaged, does not regenerate its complex zonal arrangement. A potential treatment for tendon injuries is to replace injured tendons with bioengineered tendons. However, the bioengineering of tendon will require a detailed understanding of the normal development of tendon, which is currently lacking. Here, we use the mouse patellar tendon as a model to describe the spatial and temporal pattern of expression of molecular markers for tendon differentiation from late feta…

Allog … e size, favorable inductivity and sufficient mechanical strength for repairing massive rotator cuff tendon injuries need to be developed. In this study, we developed a novel macroporous 3D aligned collagen/silk scaffold, and demonstrated that this novel scaffold enhanced the efficacy of rotator cuff tendon regeneration by inducing aligned supracellular structures …

The authors describe two unique clinical cases of closed extensor digiti minimi (EDM) tendon injuries after hyperflexion of the wrist with full finger flexion and one case of chronic tenosynovitis around the EDM tendon. All three cases were thought to be related to the bifurcation of the EDM tendon and synovial septum. Subsequently, variations in EDM tendons were investigated in 49 cadaveric hands with a focus on patterns of tendon bifurcation and their relationships with the surrounding synovial sheath. The EDM tendon was found to be bifurcated in 74% (n = 36) of hands and all of these hands …

In this review we described the anatomy and biomechanics of popliteus muscle and its tendon. Furthermore, we combined the anatomy with clinics and discussed a wide spectrum of disorders regarding the popliteus and its musculotendinous complex. There are three main anatomical regions of the popliteus musculotendinous complex: the proximal origin, the mid-portion, the distal part on the tibia. The unique localisation and various origins of the tendon, connected with structures such as fibular head, Wrisberg, Humphrey and posterior cruciate ligament, lateral meniscus, medial collateral ligament,

Traumatic soft tissue, or "degloving" injuries from trauma are common. These injuries are a result of shearing and disrupt tissue planes, such as the junction between muscle and bone. Traditional repair involves debridement followed by skin grafting or flap reconstruction. Many degloving injuries, however, extend to bone or tendon and the decreased vascularity of the wound bed can compromise the success of traditional repairs. Additionally, medical comorbidities make some patients poor candidates for flap reconstruction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the success of a dermal regener

Latissimus dorsi tendon ruptures are less-common injuries that can occur in elite throwing athletes. Physical examination of the thrower with a latissimus injury may show ecchymosis of the upper arm and asymmetry of the posterior axillary fold along with possible weakness in shoulder adduction, extension, and internal rotation. Magnetic resonance imaging is used to confirm the diagnosis. Latissimus tendon ruptures are largely treated nonoperatively; surgical repair is only advocated for in professional throwing athletes with complete avulsion injuries or midsubstance latissimus tendon tears. BACKGROUND: Complete extension of the thumb and activation of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon are fundamental to ensure maximum function. Many EPL repair techniques are described in the literature.
METHODS: The authors present an alternative technique using the brachioradialis (BR) tendon. Thirty patients with injuries of the EPL tendon in zone 8 were studied. In all cases, neither direct suture repair nor traditional tendon transfer was possible.
RESULTS: Thumb extension was restored in all patients with satisfactory extension recovery. All patients achieved excellent extension; g

We previously reported the beneficial effects of tendon transfer to eliminate extension lag of the interphalangeal joints, using the extensor carpi radialis longus prolonged by palmaris longus tendon grafts after crushing-penetrating injuries around the metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint of the middle finger. We used the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) as the alternative donor muscle and treated two cases of severe crushing injuries to MP joint, and then obtained good outcomes.

Proximal biceps tendon rupture, biceps tendinitis, and medical biceps subluxation are injuries that occur alone and in association with other pathologic conditions of the shoulder. The literature describes various strategies for imaging and treating these biceps tendon complex injuries but offers no clear consensus on a gold-standard approach. The keys to successful treatment are an accurate diagnosis, identification of associated pathologic conditions, and assessment of functional limitations of the injury.
