Endotoxin exposure has been implicated in the etiology of lung disease in cotton workers. We investigated this potential relationship in 443 cotton workers from 2 factories in Shanghai and 439 control subjects from a nearby silk mill. A respiratory questionnaire was administered and pre- and postshift forced expiratory volume (FVC) and flow in one second (FEV1) were determined for each worker. Multiple area air samples were analyzed for total elutriated dust concentration (range: 0.15 to 2.5 mg/m3) and endotoxin (range: 0.002 to 0.55 microgram U.S. Reference Endotoxin/m3). The cotton worker po

Kapok is a cotton-like fibre obtained from the fruits of Ceiba pentandra, a tree surgeon in tropical countries. In Sri Lanka ginning of kapok is usually done by machine in poorly ventilated buildings where workers are exposed to a great deal of dust. Forty-one workers in five ginneries in Colombo were examined. Mill fever occurred in 28 (77-8%) of the 36 workers who were able to give a history. Chronic bronchitis, which is an uncommon condition in Sri Lanka, was detected to seven workers with an average of 20-9 years' service in the industry. It is suggested that chronic bronchitis is an occup

Water pollution from textile industries remains a significant environmental challenge due to the discharge of dye-containing effluents into aquatic systems. In the present study, a novel polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP)-functionalized MoO3/V2O5 nanocomposite was synthesized through a wet chemical route and evaluated as an adsorbent for rapid dye removal from wastewater. The structural, morphological, and surface characteristics of the nanocomposite were investigated using X-ray diffraction, Williamson-Hall analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field-emission scanning electro

BACKGROUND: Trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) and its highly soluble carboxyl complexes, often discharged into the environment by industries such as electroplating, leather tanning, and textile manufacturing, present severe risks to human health and ecosystems due to their high toxicity. These compounds are notoriously difficult to detect and remove during wastewater treatment, as they can persist in aqueous environments. Consequently, there is a pressing need for the development of simple, cost-effective, and reliable methods for their detection, which can improve monitoring, facilitate timely int

In many important industries, such as the textile printing industry, a large amount of dye/salt wastewater is often discharged, which can destroy the ecological environment of the water body. Membrane technology has a great potential in the treatment of environmental problems caused by dye/salt wastewater. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiltration (NF) membrane has a bright future in dye/salt wastewater treatment, however, works on this are rare. Herein, antibacterial PVA NF membrane incorporated with Cu(OH)2 nanowires for the dye/salt wastewater treatment is reported. The membrane was prepared v

Wastewater effluents containing high concentrations of dyes are highly toxic to the environment and aquatic organisms. Recycle and reuse of both water and dye in textile industries can save energy and costs. Thus, new materials are being explored to fabricate highly efficient nanofiltration membranes for fulfilling industrial needs. In this work, three diamines, 1,4-cyclohexanediamine (CHD), ethylenediamine (EDA), and p-phenylenediamine (PPD), are reacted with TMC separately to fabricate a thin film composite polyamide membrane for dye desalination. Their chemical structures are different, wit

Osage orange trees (Maclura pomifera (Raf.) C.K.Schneid.) are distributed worldwide, particularly in south-east states of the USA. They produce large quantities of strong yellow fruits, bigger than oranges, but these fruits are inedible, with an acid milky juice which is little consumed by birds and insects. Extracts prepared from Osage orange fruits (hedge apple) have revealed a range of pharmacological properties of interest in human and veterinary medicine. In addition, Osage orange extracts can be used in agriculture and aquaculture, and as dyeing agent for the textile industry. Extracts c…

Indigo is a valuable, natural blue dye that has been used for centuries in the textile industry. The large-scale commercial production of indigo relies on its extraction from plants and chemical synthesis. Studies are being conducted to develop methods for environment-friendly and sustainable production of indigo using genetically engineered microbes. Here, to enhance the yield of bioindigo from an E. coli whole-cell system containing tryptophanase (TnaA) and flavin-containing monooxygenase (FMO), we evaluated tryptophan transporters to improve the transport of aromatic compounds, such as indo…

While chrysotile has been commonly used by Chinese textile industry for many years, investigations on the association of chrysotile exposure with risk of mesothelioma in China are scarce. We conducted a case-control study in a county located at Southeastern China, including 46 cases and 230 individually matched controls. A semi-quantitative method based on experts' assessment was used for evaluating hand-spinning chrysotile exposure. Conditional logistic regression models were used to assess the association of asbestos exposure with risk of mesothelioma. We found that hand-spinning chrysotile …

The traditional process for vat dyeing with woad (Isatis tinctoria L.) basically relies on microbial reduction of indigo to its soluble form, leucoindigo, through a complex fermentative process. In the 19th century, cultivation of woad went into decline and use of synthetic indigo dye and chemical reduction agents was established, with a consequent negative impact on the environment due to the release of polluting wastewaters by the synthetic dyeing industry. Recently, the ever-growing demand for environmentally friendly dyeing technologies has led to renewed interest in ecological textile tra

Organic dyes are extensively used in industries such as textiles and printing, contributing to the increasing discharge of wastewater and posing significant risks to human health. Conventional photocatalysts, including metal oxides and sulfides, often exhibit limited pollutant adsorption capacities and suffer from charge carrier recombination. In this study, we synthesized a novel composite aerogel via the lyophilization of cellulose modified with polyethyleneimine and cadmium sulfide. This composite demonstrated exceptional efficacy in degrading of methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB).

Natural fiber-welded (NFW) biopolymer composites are rapidly garnering industrial and commercial attention in the textile sector, and a recent disclosure demonstrating the production of mesoporous NFW materials suggests a bright future as sorbents, filters, and nanoparticle scaffolds. A significant roadblock in the mass production of mesoporous NFW composites for research and development is their lengthy preparation time: 24 h of water rinses to remove the ionic liquid (IL) serving as a welding medium and then 72 h of solvent exchanges (polar to nonpolar), followed by oven drying to attain a m
