The efficacy of various formulations of ivermectin administered at the recommended dose rate of 200 micrograms/kg was evaluated in cattle infested with mange mites (Sarcoptes scabiei var. bovis.), lice (Linognathus vituli and Damalinia bovis) and ticks (Boophilus decoloratus, Amblyomma hebraeum, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Hyalomma spp.) in 8 trials conducted in South Africa. Mange mites (S. scabiei) were eliminated from animals treated subcutaneously, resulting in marked clinical recovery. Oral administration reduced the numbers of, but did not eliminate these mites. Sucking lice (L. vit

Ixodes ricinus tick is a vector of bacteria of Borreliella genus and Borrelia miyamotoi. Exposure to ticks constitutes occupational risk to soldiers, but the current knowledge on this subject is still limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate tick abundance and prevalence of infection with Borreliella spp. and/or B. miyamotoi. Ticks were collected from vegetation on Drawsko, Ustka and Orzysz military training areas. Additionally, ticks infesting soldiers were also obtained. Ticks were examined by nested PCR and sequencing of flaB gene fragment. General Linear Models of One Vari

Rhipicephalus microplus, commonly known as the Asian blue tick, is a cattle parasite rarely reported to infest humans. We describe a 70-year-old Saudi man who presented with a month-long, asymptomatic tick attachment on his left flank after a camping trip. Examination revealed a live, engorged tick with mild surrounding erythema and edema but no systemic symptoms. Laboratory investigations were unremarkable, and histopathology of a punch biopsy showed eosinophilic dermatitis consistent with a localized hypersensitivity reaction. The tick was removed intact and identified as R. microplus by the

To determine whether direct passage of spirochetes between co-feeding vector ticks contributes to the likelihood that the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia afzelii will perpetuate in nature, we compared the effects of time and space on transmission efficiency between simultaneously feeding ticks. The likelihood of co-feeding transmission increases with duration of attachment of the infecting tick. Co-feeding transmission becomes less efficient as distance from the infecting tick increases. Approximately 6 times as many ticks acquire infection when feeding on infected mice than when co-feeding w

An entomophagous wasp (Hunterellus hookeri Howard) parasitizes about a third of the host-seeking nymphal Ixodes dammini Spielman et al. ticks on Naushon Island in Massachusetts (U.S.A.) where the agents of Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi Johnson et al.) and human babesiosis (Babesia microti Franca) are enzootic. Following blood-feeding, wasp-parasitized ticks are destroyed by the developing wasp. The prevalence of either human pathogen in host-seeking ticks collected in wasp-infested sites is nearly 40% lower than that found in other sites. Nymphal ticks, collected early in their season of

Propetamphos is a new organophosphorous compound with broad spectrum acaricidal and insecticidal activity. Dip wash concentrations of 100 to 200 ppm protect sheep against field challenge for approximately 10 weeks for blowflies, 16 weeks for lice and keds and six weeks for ticks. During laboratory and field trial studies a wash concentration of 125 ppm propetamphos eradicated sheep scab and protected from reinfestation for over four weeks.

Ticks are classified as hematophagous arthropods and transfer a variety of pathogens-such as viruses, bacteria, and protozoans-to vertebrate hosts during blood feeding. These transmitted pathogens cause infectious diseases that continue to affect both humans and animals worldwide. Chemical acaricides are commonly used for tick control to prevent infectious diseases. However, the continuous use of acaricides leads to the emergence of acaricide-resistant tick species; thus, alternative methods for tick control are necessary. Vaccination of vertebrate hosts with tick-derived molecules is consider

Vector and host abundance affect infection transmission rates, prevalence, and persistence in communities. Biological diversity in hosts and vectors may provide "rescue" hosts which buffer against pathogen extinction and "dilution" hosts which reduce the force of infection in communities. Anaplasma phagocytophilum is a tick-transmitted zoonotic pathogen that circulates in small mammal and tick communities characterized by varying levels of biological diversity. We examined the prevalence of A. phagocytophilum in Ixodes spp. ticks in 11 communities in northern and central California. A total of

OBJECTIVE: The aim is to present the results of monitoring the activity of Ixodes ricinus ticks and their positivity for dangerous pathogenic microorganisms in the Brno-Pisarky forest park. The monitored pathogens were Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Coxiella burnetii, Erhlichia chaffensis and Francisella tularensis. Additionally, factors potentially influencing tick activity in the location (especially the temperature) were monitored.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the location, ticks were caught using the flagging method. Positivity of ticks was determined by polymera

Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) have been widely explored for their potential in the biological control of insect pests and as an environmentally friendly alternative to acaricides for limiting tick infestation in the field. The arthropod cuticle is the main barrier against fungal infection, however, an understanding of internal defense mechanisms after EPF intrusion into the invertebrate hemocoel is still rather limited. Using an infection model of the European Lyme borreliosis vector Ixodes ricinus with the EPF Metarhizium robertsii, we demonstrated that ticks are capable of protecting themselv

The Ixodes tick may transmit multiple pathogens, Lyme disease being the most common. Early detection of tick bites and using prophylaxis measures is the key to prevent tick bite-associated diseases like babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and Lyme disease. It is recommended to follow preventive measures like using diethyltoluamide (DEET) on the skin, applying permethrin on clothes while visiting the tick-infested areas. Co-infection is an uncommon occurrence but still representative in endemic areas. If there is delayed initiation of therapy in these kinds of patients, there may be dire consequences tha

The paper presents the results of repeated investigations in the tick relapsing fever nidus (TRF) conducted after a ten-year interval in Gava settlement situated in the foothill area of the Namangan Province of Uzbekistan. A considerable deterioration in the habitat conditions of the vector, Ornithodoros papillipes Bir., due to the intensified anthropogenic effect, and decrease in its number have been noted. The distribution range of the tick (percent of infested farmsteads) in this case did not reduce. The infection rate of the vector's population with the tick relapsing fever agent decreased

The prevalence of the Ixodes dammini spirochete (IDS) in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) was studied on the eastern end of Long Island, New York. Both species commonly occur in a variety of habitats, are preferred hosts of Ixodes dammini, and can harbor the spirochetes in the blood. Each animal was examined for spirochetemia, tick infestation, and IDS infection rates in the ticks that were removed from it. The results obtained suggest that in winter deer can be infected by questing adult I. dammini. Adult ticks apparently are infected thro

In a 20-year survey the following ectoparasites were collected from Nubian ibexes: larvae of an unidentified Oestrus sp. collected from the nasal cavities, sinuses and horns, hippoboscid flies (Lipoptena chalcomelaena) specific to the Nubian ibex, blood sucking lice (Linognathus africanus) and unidentified biting lice (Damalinia sp.). Ibexes were severely infested with the cattle tick, Boophilus annulatus; a few Hyalomma anatolicum excavatum ticks were also collected. In five ibexes kept in two zoos, showing otitis, Psoroptes cuniculi, was identified, and from skin scrpaings of nine animals wi

Rhipicephalus microplus is an ixodid tick with a pantropical distribution that represents a serious threat to livestock. West Africa was free of this tick until 2007, when its introduction into Benin was reported. Shortly thereafter, further invasion of this tick species into other West African countries was identified. In this paper, we describe the first detection of R. microplus in Guinea and list the vector-borne haemoparasites that were detected in the invading and indigenous Boophilus species. In 2018, we conducted a small-scale survey of ticks infesting cattle in three administrative re

Illegal importation of animals as pets might be followed by the introduction of exotic tick species, potential vectors of pathogens that can have an impact on wildlife and/or domestic animals and on humans. Therefore, permanent measures of surveillance and control on imported reptiles are emphasized. In February 2024, black-breasted leaf turtles (Geoemyda spengleri) (n = 31) were illegally imported into Sweden from Thailand. The turtles were sent by the Swedish Customs Criminal Department West in Gothenburg to a public aquarium and terrarium (Tropicarium, Kolmården, Östergötland county) to be

Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.), the brown dog tick, transmits several important haemo-protozoan and rickettsial pathogens to dogs. Effective control of these ticks is entirely by the use of acaricidal preparations both on and off the host. Indiscriminate use of acaricides can cause environmental pollution and toxicity to humans as well as development of acaricidal resistance in ticks. As an alternative control strategy, a novel, eco-friendly and economical solar tick trap, which attracts ticks using pheromones and kills them by electrocution, was fabricated for use in kennels to co

Thirteen acaricides used for control of cattle tick in Queensland were evaluated for their potential in the chemical control of the screw-worm fly, Chrysomya bezziana. Laboratory evaluations and in vivo tests using artificially infested cattle were made in Papua New Guinea. Most of the acaricides caused some mortality of screw-worm larvae in infested cattle and in laboratory tests. Acaricides of the organophosphorous, carbamate and organophosphorous/synthetic pyrethroid groups showed reasonable activity against screw-worm fly, but the amidines were less effective.
