Daily and family profiles of adolescent-mother-father perceived interparental interactions and family members' sleep: A multi-reporter multilevel study.

Grounded in family systems theory, this study aimed to understand how adolescent-mother-father perceived interparental positivity and interparental negativity related to each family member's sleep quality and duration. Using 30-day daily reports from adolescents (Mage = 14.75, 38.3% female, 59.81% white), mothers (Magee = 41.76, 64.49% white), and fathers (Magee = 44.04, 61.68% white) in 107 U.S. families, multilevel latent profile analyses, run separately for interparental positivity and negativity, identified daily- and family-profiles of adolescent-mother-father perceptions. Results reveale

What does cooking mean to you?: Perceptions of cooking and factors related to cooking behavior.

Despite the importance of cooking in American life and evidence suggesting that meals cooked at home are healthier, little is known about perceptions of what it means to cook in the United States. The objective of this study was to describe perceptions of cooking and factors important to how cooking is perceived and practiced among American adults. Seven focus groups (N = 53; 39 female; 35 Black, 16 White, 2 Asian) were conducted from November 2014 to January 2015 in Baltimore City, Maryland. Participants were recruited from two neighborhoods; one with higher median income and access to health

Depression in Uveal Melanoma Survivorship: Examining Psychological Predictors of Adjustment in the First Year Following Diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: A rare cancer, uveal melanoma (UM) affects 5 in 1 million adults annually. Research on predictors of mental health in UM survivors is scarce. PURPOSE: In this prospective study, we tested models that postulate interactions between illness perceptions and coping processes in predicting depressive symptoms 1 year following UM diagnosis. METHODS: Participants' approach- and avoidance-oriented coping processes and illness perceptions specific to control and chronicity were assessed. Participants (N = 107) completed assessments prior to diagnosis (T0), and 1 week (T1), 3 months (T2),

A Detailed Characterisation of Appetite, Sensory Perceptional, and Eating-Behavioural Effects of COVID-19: Self-Reports from the Acute and Post-Acute Phase of Disease.

Sensory perception alterations are common in relation to COVID-19 disease, but less is known about the characteristic of the sensory alterations, and how they associate with alterations in appetite and eating behaviour. The current study aims to investigate the acute and long-term effects of COVID-19 disease on (1) the desire for food, hunger, and satiety sensations; (2) smell, taste, and flavour perception; (3) meals and intake of food types; and (4) the frequency of commonly applied strategies to tackle potential changes in appetite and sensory perception. An online survey was conducted amon

Acoustic Correlates of Timing Typicality in Speakers With Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to determine acoustic metrics that can approximate listener perception of the typicality of speech timing in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). It was hypothesized that the perception of timing typicality would correlate with measures based on the deviation from speech produced by individuals with typical speech (in speaking duration, in pause time and other disfluencies, and at the word level). METHOD: Twenty speakers with PD and 40 typical speakers matched in age and sex were recorded reading a standard passage. Acoustic timing measures were calculat

A transient deficit of motion perception in human.

We studied the motion perception abilities in a young adult, SF, who had her right occipito-temporal cortices resected to treat epilepsy. Following resection, SF showed transient deficits of both first- and second-order motion perception that recovered to normal within weeks. Previous human studies have shown either first- or second n order motion deficits that have lasted months or years after cerebral damage. SF also showed a transient defect in processing of shape-from-motion with normal perception of shape from non-motion cues. Furthermore, she showed greatly increased reaction times for a

Hypothesis concerning embodied calendars: A case study of number form, color spreading, and taste-color synaesthesia.

We propose a hypothesis concerning the neural basis of the mental 'calendar' we all carry around in our brains, based on observations we made on a 25year old 'projector synaesthete', EA, who displays some novel and instructive features. In addition to her grapheme-color synaesthesia, she has a circular 'calendar line', laid out vividly in front of her in the horizontal plane with December 31st passing through the middle of her chest and other months arranged in clockwise sequence ending with December on her right (July was 3 feet in front of her). Her access to episodic memories felt, subjecti

Gender identification in younger and older adults: use of spectral and temporal cues in noise-vocoded speech.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate potential effects of age on the ability of normal-hearing (NH) adult listeners to utilize spectral and temporal cues when performing a voice gender identification task. DESIGN: Ten younger and 10 older NH adult listeners were measured on their ability to correctly identify the speaker gender of six different vowel tokens (H-/vowel/-D) when spoken by eight speakers (four male and four female). Spectral (number of channels) and temporal cues (low-pass cut-off frequency for temporal envelope extraction) were systematically manipulated using noi

Duration-sensitive neurons in the inferior colliculus of horseshoe bats: adaptations for using CF-FM echolocation pulses.

The present study examines duration-sensitive neurons in the inferior colliculus (IC) of the least horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus pusillus, from China. In contrast to other bat species tested for duration selectivity so far, echolocation pulses emitted by horseshoe bats are generally longer and composed of a long constant-frequency (CF) component followed by a short downward frequency-modulated (FM) sweep (CF-FM pulse). We used combined CF-FM pulses to analyze the differential effects that these two pulse components had on the duration tuning in neurons of the horseshoe bat's IC. Consistent with r

Evaluation of the Relationship Between Family History of Breast Cancer and Risk Perception and Impacts on Repetition of Mammography.

Since the mean age of breast cancer in women living in developing countries, compared with those in developed countries, is lower by about 10 years, repetition of mammography can play an important role in reducing morbidity and mortality. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between family history of breast cancer and risk perception and its impact on repetition of mammography. In this cross-sectional study, 1,507 women aged 50 years and older, referred to the mammography center of Regions 1 and 6 in Tehran, Iran, were enrolled. Data were collected using a self-report questi

The growth and recovery of vibrotactile TTs caused by hand-transmitted repetitive shocks of various waveforms.

The effect of shock repetition rate on the temporary threshold shifts (TTSs) in vibrotactile perception at the fingers has been studied with shocks having exponential decays and hanning waveforms. The repetition rate of shocks delivered at the hand varied from 2 shocks per second up to 64 shocks per second. Subjects were exposed to vertical hand-transmitted repetitive shock vibration of equal energy contents. The magnitudes of the stimuli were adjusted to 2.8 ms-2 r.m.s. so that they were all equally severe according to current standards for assessing the severity of hand-transmitted vibration

Validation of the Bath CRPS Body Perception Disturbance Scale.

The Bath Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Body Perception Disturbance Scale ("B-CRPS-BPDS") measures alterations in body perception. We assessed its internal consistency, known group validity, construct validity, and associations with demographic and clinical characteristics. We also evaluated changes in, and baseline predictors of B-CRPS-BPDS scores at follow-up. We included people with CRPS (N = 114) and pain-free controls (N = 69). People with CRPS obtained higher scores than pain-free controls on all B-CRPS-BPDS items, except the item on attention. Because this item also had an insufficient

Probing the Impact of Gender-Affirming Hormone Treatment on Odor Perception.

Evidence suggests that women outperform men in core aspects of odor perception, and sex hormones may play a significant role in moderating this effect. The gender-affirming treatment (GAT) of transgender persons constitutes a powerful natural experiment to study the psychological and behavioral effects of high dosages of cross-sex hormone applications. Therefore, our aim was to investigate the effects of GAT on odor perception in a sample of 131 participants including female and male controls, as well as transmen and transwomen over their first 4 months of gender transition. The Sniffin' Stick
