Evaluation of cyclophotocoagulation effects with 1310-nm contact optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE: The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate whether contact optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows visualization of the effects of cyclophotocoagulation. METHODS: In this pilot study, transscleral contact OCT images (1310-nm wavelength) were generated prior to and immediately after conventional transscleral diode laser cyclophotocoagulation in three eyes of three patients who were suffering from uncontrolled glaucoma. RESULTS: In the region of the ciliary body, transscleral contact OCT revealed two layers: (i) a superficial thick hyperreflective complex representing conjunctiva,

Nail thickness measurements using optical coherence tomography and 20-MHz ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND: Nail diseases are often troubling to the patient and may present a diagnostic challenge to the dermatologist. Biopsies from the nail may be required although often perceived uncomfortable by the patient and potentially scarring. Noninvasive technologies are therefore of particular interest in the study of nails. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an optical imaging modality which may provide improved data. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates nail morphology and thickness in OCT images in comparison with high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) imaging of the nail. METHODS: Ten healthy vo

Macular thickness after uneventful cataract surgery determined by optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND: Using standardized macular optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the postoperative period, subclinical changes in macular thickness can be detected. With this method, postoperative development of macular thickness in healthy eyes is evaluated. The repeatability of the method and the influence of selected surgical (phaco time and phaco energy) and biometric parameters (axial length and anterior chamber depth) on the results were assessed. METHODS: In a prospective study, 33 patients without macular pathology in both eyes were examined. Phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL)

Macular and extramacular optical coherence tomography findings in X-linked retinoschisis.

Two brothers with X-linked retinoschisis were evaluated using optical coherence tomography. Macular cleavage was observed at the inner nuclear layer. Retinal nerve fiber layer loss or detachment was observed outside the macular area, even in areas of clinically normal retina. Macular thickening and cavitation with multiple septa was characteristic, decreasing rapidly from the center toward the macular periphery and being more pronounced in the younger patient. No abnormal vitreomacular relationship or traction over the macular and extramacular schisis areas was observed. Optical coherence tomo

Physiological system identification with the Kalman filter in diffuse optical tomography.

Diffuse optical tomography (DOT) is a noninvasive imaging technology that is sensitive to local concentration changes in oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin. When applied to functional neuroimaging, DOT measures hemodynamics in the scalp and brain that reflect competing metabolic demands and cardiovascular dynamics. Separating the effects of systemic cardiovascular regulation from the local dynamics is vitally important in DOT analysis. In this paper, we use auxiliary physiological measurements such as blood pressure and heart rate within a Kalman filter framework to model physiological components in DOT

First in vivo optical coherence tomography in the human bile duct.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a novel technique for performing high-resolution, cross-sectional tomographic imaging in human tissue, which allows resolution of up to 10 microm. The short depth of penetration allows assessment of the superficial 2 mm of the gastrointestinal tract, an area that is difficult to appraise even with high-frequency ultrasound. This is the first report on in vivo OCT of the human biliary system. The aim was to assess the feasibility of the technique. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Four cases of intraductal OCT are presented. The probe was in

[Macular diseases--application of automated static perimetry and optical coherence tomography].

The usefulness of automated static perimetry and optical coherence tomography in the management of macular diseases has been described. Scotomata in eyes with central serous chorioretinopathy could be evaluated with central 10-degree automated static perimetry. The degree of visual field defects in eyes with the disease varied greatly with mean deviation of -10 dB or less in as many as 10% of the subjects. Although retinitis pigmentosa is a diffuse retinal dystrophy, eyes with a moderately advanced stage of retinitis pigmentosa should be managed as a macular disease, because the functioning re

Optical Characterization of Gram-Positive and Gram-Negative Biofilms Using Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography and Deep Learning.

Biofilms are microbial communities enclosed in a matrix that increases antibiotic tolerance and underlies persistent device-associated infections, making label-free, non-destructive characterization important. Established differences in cell-wall structure between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria are expected to alter light scattering, motivating the hypothesis that the two groups differ in optical attenuation. This proof-of-concept study tested that optical prediction using optical coherence tomography. The optical attenuation coefficient was extracted from cross-sectional images. Gra

In vivo skin optical clearing efficacy quantification of clinically compatible agents using line-field confocal optical coherence tomography.

SIGNIFICANCE: The clinical use of optical methods for in vivo skin imaging is limited by skin strong scattering properties, which reduce image contrast and probing depth. The efficiency of optical methods can be improved by optical clearing (OC). However, for the use of OC agents (OCAs) in a clinical setting, compliance with acceptable non-toxic concentrations is required. AIM: OC of in vivo human skin, combined with physical and chemical methods to enhance skin permeability to OCAs, was performed to determine the clearing-effectiveness of biocompatible OCAs using line-field confocal optical
