Maxillary sinus and posterior teeth: accessing close relationship by cone-beam computed tomographic scanning in a Brazilian population.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the close proximity established between the maxillary sinus floor and posterior teeth roots apices by using cone-beam computed tomographic scanning. METHODS: The relationship of maxillary sinuses and posterior teeth roots, which were divided into 2 groups, was analyzed using i-CAT Vision software (Imaging Sciences, Hatfield, PA). Group 1 included all root apices found in close contact with the maxillary sinus floor without sinus floor elevation, whereas group 2 included all root apices that were protruded within the sinus producing an elevation of th

Diagnostic accuracy of digitized periapical radiographs validated against micro-computed tomography scanning in evaluating orthodontically induced apical root resorption.

The aim of this study was to validate the use of digitized periapical radiographs in evaluating orthodontically induced apical root resorption against micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scanning as a criterion standard test. In a standardized experimental protocol, 29 premolars in 16 subjects were tipped buccally for 8 wk. Nineteen contralateral premolars not subjected to orthodontic movement served as controls. Standardized periapical radiographs were taken before and after the experimental period (Rx method). These teeth were extracted and scanned using a micro-CT technique with a 9 mum re

First-stage assessment of AI-based anatomical measurement accuracy for the Cameriere European dental age estimation method.

AIM: This study represents the first methodological stage of a broader AI-assisted Cameriere European dental age estimation workflow. The aim of this first stage was to evaluate the performance of YOLOv8-based deep learning models in automatically detecting the anatomical landmarks and apical structures required for the Cameriere European method. Rather than directly estimating dental age, the proposed system was designed to automate the measurement-related inputs needed for subsequent Cameriere European-based age calculation. METHODS: This retrospective first-stage validation study included

Exceptionally rapid tooth development and ontogenetic changes in the feeding apparatus of the Komodo dragon.

Dental developmental and replacement patterns in extinct amniotes have attracted a lot of attention. Notable among these are Paleozoic predatory synapsids, but also Mesozoic theropod dinosaurs, well known for having true ziphodonty, strongly serrated carinae with dentine cores within an enamel cap. The Komodo dragon, Varanus komodoensis, is the only extant terrestrial vertebrate to exhibit true ziphodonty, making it an ideal model organism for gaining new insights into the life history and feeding behaviours of theropod dinosaurs and early synapsids. We undertook a comparative dental histologi

A new group of species within the bee genus Ruizantheda, with a revised key to the males of the genus (Hymenoptera: Halictidae: Caenohalictini).

Males of the neotropical bee genus Ruizantheda Moure sensu lato (Halictinae: Caenohalictini) differ from those of other caenohalictine genera in having the outer gonostylar plate with a large membranous region that extends to the ventral region, and the ventral gonostylar lobe retrorse. These features permit the placement of six additional species described here, four of which are new, in the genus in this broader sense. The males of these six species share the following characteristics: profemur swollen; mesofemur exceedingly swollen; mesotibia slightly swollen with flat, minutely ridged vent

Radiographic evaluation of root apex to mandibular canal distance in the posterior mandible for assessing risk of inferior alveolar nerve injury during immediate implant placement.

BACKGROUND: Immediate implant placement in the posterior mandible is associated with a risk of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury due to anatomical variations such as lingual concavities and variability in mandibular canal positioning. Accurate three-dimensional assessment of these structures is therefore essential. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the root apex-mandibular canal distance (RAC), prevalence and morphology of lingual concavities, and cross-sectional ridge patterns in the posterior mandible to identify high-risk sites for IAN injury during immediate implant placement.

Prevalence of internal inflammatory root resorption.

INTRODUCTION: Internal inflammatory root resorption is regarded as rare because it is only occasionally detected in clinical or radiographic examination of teeth. However, inflammation is supposedly an important etiologic factor of internal resorption. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that there is no difference in the presence of internal resorption between teeth with vital, healthy pulp and teeth with a history of pulp inflammation. METHODS: Thirty teeth with no previous root canal treatment that were to be sequentially extracted from adult patients were diagnosed for their pulpal status

Innovative endodontic therapy for anti-inflammatory direct pulp capping of permanent teeth with a mature apex.

Direct pulp capping is treatment of an exposed vital pulp with a dental material to facilitate the formation of reparative dentin and maintenance of vital pulp. It has been studied as an alternate way to avoid vital pulp extirpation. However, the success rate of pulp capping is much lower than that of vital pulp extirpation. Therefore, direct pulp capping is currently considered controversial by many clinicians. To increase the success rate, a critical need exists to develop new biologically based therapeutics that reduce pulp inflammation, promote the continued formation of new dentin-pulp co

Management of mucosal fenestrations by interdisciplinary approach: a report of three cases.

INTRODUCTION: Mucosal fenestrations are infrequently encountered in clinical practice, and as such, their management has not been reported often. Their treatment might be further complicated by communication, with the oral environment making them susceptible to the deposition of plaque and calculus, a secondary factor in preventing reformation of mucosal covering. METHODS: Three cases of mucosal fenestrations are presented, of which 2 were nonvital and were treated endodontically. Full-thickness flap was elevated; root-end resection and root-end filling with light-cured glass ionomer were don

Evaluation of apical cavity preparation with a new type of ultrasonic diamond tip.

This study evaluated the time, occurrence of fracture, and quality of apical cavity preparation with three different ultrasonic diamond tips: Satelec, Trinity, and a new type, CVD (chemical vapor deposition), using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Thirty human single-rooted premolars were selected, submitted to apicectomy, and prepared with ultrasonic tips; impressions were then obtained. The presence of fractures was evaluated on the impressions, and the quality of preparation was evaluated by SEM analysis of teeth and scoring by two examiners. The group prepared with the CVD tips

Comparison of two cone beam computed tomographic systems versus panoramic imaging for localization of impacted maxillary canines and detection of root resorption.

The diagnostic accuracy for the localization of impacted canines and the detection of canine-induced root resorption of maxillary incisors were compared between conventional radiographic procedures using one two-dimensional (2D) panoramic radiograph with that of two three-dimensional (3D) cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. The clinical records of 60 consecutive patients who had impacted or ectopically erupting maxillary canines were identified from those seeking orthodontic treatment. For each case, two sets of radiographic information were obtained. The study sample was divided into
