Alveolar ridge preservation in a growing patient with decoronation: One-year follow-up.

Dentoalveolar ankylosis in growing patients is associated with continuing replacement root resorption, tooth infrapositioning, and the local arrest of alveolar bone growth. While extraction of ankylosed teeth might be associated with bone loss, decoronation of the offending tooth (removal of crown portion and instrumentation of pulp canal to stimulate bleeding) has been suggested as a more conservative approach of bone preservation until definitive implant placement is planned. This is a case presentation of a 14-year-old patient who presented with root resorption in relation to the left maxil

One-stage surgical approach to rehabilitate severely injured anterior teeth in a young woman.

Trauma of the maxillofacial district may cause severe injuries to patients, such as tooth loss or tooth fractures, which can irreversibly compromise aesthetics and function. The aim of this clinical report was to illustrate the possibility of achieving positive aesthetic and functional outcomes in a young patient through a 1-stage surgical approach. In a single stage, the patient underwent extraction of a compromised tooth, insertion of 5 implants, bone and connective grafts, and management of a fresh scar. A satisfied and appeased result from the patient's and clinician's points of view was ob…

Dentoalveolar distraction osteogenesis for rapid orthodontic canine retraction.

PURPOSE: We present a technique to reduce the overall orthodontic treatment time by means of dentoalveolar distraction osteogenesis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eleven patients who were planned to undergo orthodontic treatment with bilateral first premolar extractions and subsequent bilateral canine tooth distalization underwent osteotomy around the canine tooth. The first premolar was extracted, and the buccal bone was carefully removed. After wound closure, a special orthopedic device was mounted and cemented to the first molar and canine teeth. Distraction was started the same day at the rate of

Periodontal and Periapical Outcomes of Surgical Extrusion: A Prospective Clinical Volumetric Study.

INTRODUCTION: Outcome predictors for the restoration of endodontically treated teeth mainly include cavity wall integrity and the presence of a 1.5-2 mm ferrule. However, in some clinical situations, the aforementioned predictors cannot be achieved. Three different techniques have been proposed to obtain an adequate ferrule respecting the supracrestal tissue attachment: surgical crown lengthening, orthodontic forced eruption, and surgical extrusion. There are little published prospective data evaluating periodontal changes after surgical extrusion. Therefore, the aims of this study were to rep

Oral examination and radiographic evaluation of the dentition in wild cats from Namibia.

Feline tooth resorption has been widely reported in domestic cats and sporadically described in other felidae. The goal of the present study was to determine the prevalence of tooth resorption and to report other dental problems in a population of wild felidae. Observations of dental disorders and anomalies were made in skulls from 73 wild felidae (cheetahs, leopards, caracals, African wildcats, and lions) originating from Namibia. In addition, radiographs were taken in 43 cases to determine signs of bone and root pathology. Radiographs showed varying stages of tooth resorption in 16.0% of the

Assessment of evidence from teeth and the alveolar bone of skulls.

A notable lack of agreement on a standardised criterion for representing changes in alveolar bone persists, which limits its application in … otoshop 26.4.1 was used to create diagrammatic representations of alveolar socket changes following tooth loss. Blunt force skull trauma affected tooth insertion in two cases. Most of the dental trauma involved enamel-dentine (n = 48; 74%), and untreated decay was relatively low (n = 14). Most missing teeth were lost antemortem (n = 283; 87%). Dehiscence was …

Orthodontics. Part 9: anchorage control and distal movement.

Anchorage is an important consideration when planning orthodontic tooth movement. Unwanted tooth movement known as loss of anchorage can have a detrimental effect on the treatment outcome. Anchorage can be sourced from the teeth, the oral mucosa and underlying bone, implants and extra orally. If extra-oral anchorage is used, particularly with a facebow then the use of at least two safety devices is mandatory.

Tooth wear: diet analysis and advice.

Diet analysis and advice for patients with tooth wear is potentially the most logical intervention to arrest attrition, erosion and abrasion. It is saliva that protects the teeth against corrosion by the acids which soften enamel and make it susceptible to wear. Thus the lifestyles and diet of patients at risk need to be analysed for sources of acid and reasons for lost salivary protection. Medical conditions which put patients at risk of tooth wear are principally: asthma, bulimia nervosa, caffeine addiction, diabetes mellitus, exercise dehydration, functional depression, gastroesophageal ref

AI-assisted radiographic analysis in detecting alveolar bone-loss severity and patterns.

Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease causing alveolar bone loss which significantly affects oral health and quality of life. Accurate assessment of bone loss severity and pattern is critical for diagnosis and treatment planning. In this study, we propose a novel AI-based deep learning framework to automatically detect and quantify alveolar bone loss and its patterns using intraoral periapical (IOPA) radiographs. Our method combines YOLOv8 for tooth detection with Keypoint R-CNN models to identify anatomical landmarks, enabling precise calculation of bone loss severity. Additionally, Y

The association of external cervical resorption with modern internal bleaching protocols: what is the current evidence?

Internal bleaching is an effective and minimally invasive way of bleaching non-vital teeth. A commonly cited risk associated with it is external cervical resorption (ECR), which is a potentially significant complication that could result in loss of the tooth. This is an important point of discussion with a patient during the consent process. Legally, patients are required to be made aware of material risks to which they would be likely to attach significance, such as the loss of a tooth. The risk of ECR is therefore a key component in the patient's decision-making process as they weigh it agai

Craniofacial and Dental Features in Six Children With Cherubism.

Cherubism is an autosomal-dominant benign bone disorder, characterized by fibro-osseous lesions in the mandible and maxilla commonly caused by mutations in the SH3-binding protein 2-gene. The purpose of the authors' study was to analyze craniofacial and dental features of children diagnosed with cherubism, describe their treatment, and assess their dental age compared with norms for Finnish children. Six children were diagnosed, followed up and treated due to dental and skeletal disorders caused by cherubsim. The patients were followed up for an average of 91.5 months with emphasis on the skel

[Auto-transplantation of tooth germs. Discussion and presentation of 3 treated cases].

The authors examine the theoretical possibilities of human dental transplants: autologous, homologous and heterologous. They, then discuss-with reference to autologous transplants-an autotransplant as an alternative to prosthodontic treatment. This would apply both to traditional prosthodontic treatment and on implants or orthodontic treatment aiming at filling dental gaps. They show both general and local counterindications against this operational method the knowledge of which is necessary for an adequate selection of patients. They stress the determining factors for a successful autotranspl

Poor Oral Health Is Associated With Inflammation, Aortic Valve Calcification, and Brain Volume Among Forager-Farmers.

Poor oral health is associated with cardiovascular disease and dementia. Potential pathways include sepsis from oral bacteria, systemic inflammation, and nutritional deficiencies. However, in post-industrialized populations, links between oral health and chronic disease may be confounded because the lower socioeconomic exposome (poor diet, pollution, and low physical activity) often entails insufficient dental care. We assessed tooth loss, caries, and damaged teeth, in relation to cardiovascular and brain aging among the Tsimane, a subsistence population living a relatively traditional forager…

Anatomical characteristics of the alveolar process and basal bone that have an effect on socket healing.

Following tooth extraction, a sequence of events takes place in order to close the wound and restore tissue homeostasis, a process called socket healing. The outcome of socket healing includes a marked reduction of the ridge dimensions. The amount of tissue loss that occurs during healing is influenced by several local and systemic factors. Thus, the aim of the present review was to describe the effect of anatomical characteristics of the alveolar process and basal bone on the socket healing outcome. The studies included showed that the quantity (number) and quality (composition) of socket wal

Combined nonsurgical and implant restoration after dental trauma: a case report.

Dentoalveolar trauma is an important etiologic factor for tooth loss. A multidisciplinary approach to treatment is necessary because the functional, esthetic, and psychosocial problems that result from dentoalveolar trauma can significantly influence the patient's quality of life. The objective of this article is to describe the multidisciplinary treatment of a 39-year-old man who experienced dentoalveolar trauma in a bicycle accident. Clinical and tomographic examinations revealed the avulsion of the maxillary left central incisor as well as coronal fractures of the other incisors and the max…

Is ridge preservation effective in the extraction sockets of periodontally compromised teeth? A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To verify whether ridge preservation is effective in the reduction of dimensional loss and in bone formation compared to spontaneous healing in extraction sockets of periodontally compromised teeth. METHODS: Twenty-six subjects requiring tooth extraction for stage III/IV periodontitis were randomly assigned to one of two interventions: alveolar ridge preservation using collagenated bovine bone mineral and a resorbable collagen membrane (test, RP) or spontaneous healing (control, SH). Six months later, postoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was performed to measure the l
