[Psychopathology, characteristics of violence and dropout in male batterers treatment programs: results of an intervention service].

This paper deals with male violence toward female partners and the analysis of some variables related to this aggressive behavior. We study the type of violence perpetrated and some indicators of psychopathology, such as personality disorders, previous psychiatric or psychological care, substance abuse and jealous behavior, among others. In addition, we examine the relationship between these variables and the fact that the men do not complete the treatment program. For this purpose, we employed a sample of 118 men who voluntarily participated in an intervention service, and we carried out an e

Sex differences in the association between childhood adversities and schizotypal personality traits.

Patients with psychosis report higher levels of adverse events in childhood. This relationship has not been extensively examined in healthy individuals who score highly on schizotypal personality traits. This study examined the association between different childhood traumas and psychosis-like traits in a general population sample, as well as differences in those links between men and women. Participants completed an online survey including measures of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and schizotypal personality traits. Results showed that the experience of emotional abuse was associated

Platelet MAO and personality--function and dysfunction.

Research on the association between platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity and personality traits, such as sensation seeking and impulsiveness, is reviewed with an emphasis on early history and current situation. The effects of MAO-inhibiting compounds in cigarette smoke for the interpretation of this association are discussed and recent results confirming a true association between platelet MAO activity and personality and vulnerability, for e.g. type 2 alcoholism are presented. From a clinical point of view, the link between platelet MAO activity, which is highly genetically regulated and

A comparison of experiences of care and expressed emotion among caregivers of young people with first-episode psychosis or borderline personality disorder features.

OBJECTIVE: Caregivers of individuals with severe mental illness often experience significant negative experiences of care, which can be associated with higher levels of expressed emotion. Expressed emotion is potentially a modifiable target early in the course of illness, which might improve outcomes for caregivers and patients. However, expressed emotion and caregiver experiences in the early stages of disorders might be moderated by the type of severe mental illness. The aim was to determine whether experiences of the caregiver role and expressed emotion differ in caregivers of young people

Predictors for switch from unipolar major depressive disorder to bipolar disorder type I or II: a 5-year prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: In this naturalistic study, we investigated the rate, time course, and predictors of a diagnostic switch from unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD) to bipolar disorder type I or II during a 5-year follow-up. METHOD: The Vantaa Depression Study included at baseline 269 psychiatric outpatients (82.9%) and inpatients (17.1%) with DSM-IV MDD, diagnosed using structured and semi-structured interviews and followed up at 6 months, 18 months, and 5 years between February 1, 1997 and April 30, 2004. Information on 248 MDD patients (92.2%) was available for analyses of the risk of diagnos

An analysis of the relationship of selected personality traits on perceived stress in patients undergoing ablation for atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the correlation between selected personality traits and the level of perceived stress in patients undergoing catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. These arrhythmias are among the most common cardiac rhythm disorders. Previous research suggests that psychological factors such as stress and personality traits may correlate their development and clinical course. Understanding these relationships may improve the effectiveness of patient care, particularly in terms of psychological support during the perioperat

Psychological Profile of Patients with Psoriasis.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease with a global prevalence of approximately 2% and significant psychiatric comorbidity. There is a great deal of existing literature assessing different aspects of psychology in psoriasis. We aimed to conduct an in-depth review of current evidence linking psoriasis to personality traits and psychiatric comorbidities, as well as factors that put these patients at risk of psychopathology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search of the PubMed database identified 1632 articles. We included articles studying psychological comorbidity in patients with

Using machine learning modeling to identify childhood abuse victims on the basis of personality inventory responses.

Trauma is very common and associated with significant co-morbidity world-wide, particularly PTSD and frequently other mental health disorders. However, it can be challenging to identify victims of abuse as self-reports can be difficult to elicit due to emotional distress. Better confirmation of a history of significant mistreatment can assist significantly in treatment planning. We evaluate an alternate approach based on machine-learning techniques applied to personality inventory data (Minnesota Personality Inventory, Adolescent Version; MMPI-A) obtained concurrently to examine convergence wi

An expert consensus approach to relating the proposed DSM-5 types and traits.

Although personality disorders (PDs) have been defined categorically throughout the history of psychiatric nomenclatures, the DSM-5 Personality and Personality Disorders Work Group proposed a substantial shift to a dimensional conceptualization and diagnosis of personality pathology. This proposal included the adoption of a trait model with 37 specific traits that fell within six higher-order domains. In addition, they specified that half of the current diagnoses be recast as types defined by narrative description, with the other half deleted. Instead, the deleted categories would be diagnosed

Trajectories of patient-reported health status in patients with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator.

To date, no study has assessed the course of patient-reported health status in patients with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Studying health status trajectories and their baseline determinants would permit the identification of patients at risk for poor health outcomes after ICD implantation. A combined cohort of 1,222 patients with an ICD (79% men; age = 61.4 [11.2] years) completed the 12-Item Short-Form Health Survey at baseline and 2 to 3 months and 12 to 14 months after implantation. Latent class analyses were used to identify trajectories and predictors of health status

Personality traits influence the effectiveness of hypomania checklist-32 in screening for bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: It is clinically challenging to distinguish bipolar disorder (BD) from major depressive disorder (MDD) in the early stages. While the hypomania checklist-32 (HCL-32) is a proper auxiliary tool that is useful to differentiate between BD and MDD, there is currently no standard cut-off value. The variations in HCL-32 cut-off values could potentially be influenced by personality traits. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the effect of personality traits on the screening performance of HCL-32. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 168 patients with BD or MDD

[Homicide by mentally ill: clinical and criminological analysis].

The present study analysed the characteristics of homicide in internees according to the Social Defence system in Belgium. The Social Defence system was inaugurated in 1930, following the ideas of Adolphe Prins, a Belgian specialist in the criminal law. The Social Defence system concerns those offenders who are considered as mentally ill at large. The concept of mental illness encompasses the classical notion of "dementia" but also those people with mental unbalance as personality disordered offenders and mentally retarded persons. In the present study, we considered all those internees who co

Psychosocial correlates of body fat distribution in black and white young adults.

We examined the association of fat distribution with a number of personality attributes and behaviours in a sample of 5115 young blacks and whites. Body fat distribution, measured by the ratio of waist-to-hip circumferences (WHR), was significantly and positively associated with cigarette smoking and negatively associated with education in all of the race and sex groups. WHR was positively associated with alcohol consumption in men and black women and with marijuana use in women. A number of psychosocial factors assessing personality attributes and behaviours were also examined, including the

Prevalence of Type A behavior in untreated hypertensive individuals.

Type A behavior has been associated with coronary heart disease as well as high cholesterol and smoking, major risk factors for coronary heart disease, but the data indicating a similar association with hypertension are inconsistent. Since past studies have usually based hypertension on a single blood pressure assessment or have often included treated hypertensive patients, this inconsistency is not surprising. The current study compared the prevalence of Type A behavior (assessed by Rosenman's structured interview) between 109 untreated hypertensive subjects and 109 age-, sex-, ethnic-, and o
