Diabetes and uveitis. A large cohort evaluation of the association between glycaemic control and incident undifferentiated anterior uveitis. (The DULCE Study).

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the risk of incident, undifferentiated, anterior uveitis increases with worsening glycaemic control. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This retrospective, multicentre cohort study analysed 12,192,033 adults (>= 18 years) from the TriNetX database (2010-2023). Individuals with pre-existing uveitis or systemic inflammatory diseases were excluded. The primary outcome was the incidence of undifferentiated anterior uveitis. HbA1c was modelled both categorically (non-diabetic, well-controlled diabetes [<8.0%], poorly controlled diabetes [>= 8.0%]) and continuously. Cox p…

Rubella Virus- and Cytomegalovirus-Associated Anterior Uveitis: Clinical Findings and How They Relate to the Current Fuchs Uveitis Syndrome Classification.

Rubella virus (RV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) have both been implicated in anterior uveitis (AU). Clinical phenotypes can vary widely among both etiologies, including Fuchs uveitis syndrome (FUS) as a very distinct phenotype that has been associated with both RV and CMV. The Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) Working Group recently updated the classification criteria for FUS as unilateral AU, including either heterochromia or diffuse iris atrophy combined with stellate keratic precipitates as key findings. The aim of this study was to determine whether our patients adhere to the clas…

Syphilitic uveitis: a review of clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes of syphilitic uveitis in human immunodeficiency virus-positive and negative patients.

The incidence of syphilis and syphilitic uveitis in our community is increasing. The prevalence of associated neurosyphilis is unknown, and it remains unclear whether syphilitic uveitis should be treated as secondary syphilis with intramuscular penicillin or neurosyphilis with intravenous penicillin. The (English language) literature was reviewed for all unique cases of syphilitic uveitis reported from 1984 to June 2008. For each case the following data were recorded: the clinical features of the syphilis, the uveitis and any associated neurosyphilis, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) sta…

Characteristics of JIA-associated uveitis at the age of transition.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common rheumatic disease in children. Uveitis is the most frequent extra-articular manifestation of JIA and a major cause of visual morbidity. Despite advances in immunomodulatory therapy, many patients reach adulthood with active ocular inflammation or vision-threatening complications. The transition from pediatric to adult care represents a vulnerable period. The primary objective of our study is to describe ophthalmologic and rheumatologic disease characteristics at the time of transition from pediatric to adult care. METHODS: We …

Remission in sarcoid uveitis: identification of predictive factors.

OBJECTIVE: To identify predictive factors of remission in patients with sarcoid uveitis and to evaluate recurrence rates and patterns following remission. METHODS: Multicentre retrospective study of patients with sarcoid uveitis and a minimum follow-up of 3 years. Remission was defined as the absence of clinical symptoms of sarcoidosis for at least 3 years without treatment. Remission-free Kaplan-Meier survival curves were constructed for selected variables. Cox proportional hazards model was then applied. HRs and 95% CIs were estimated for each variable. Statistical significance was set at t…

Advances of Intraocular Fluid for the Application and Treatment of Uveitis.

Uveitis is a group of inflammatory eye diseases, which may affect the iris, ciliary body, choroid and other structures, and in severe cases may lead to vision loss. Due to the variety of causes and complex pathogenesis of uveitis, the empirical use of drugs in the absence of clear etiology is likely to be counterproductive and delay the patient's condition. In recent years, the analysis of intraocular fluid (including aqueous humor and vitreous body) has made significant progress in the diagnosis, etiology research and treatment of uveitis. Therefore, this review summarized the latest research…
