Complete resolution of a mitral valve vegetation with anticoagulation in seronegative antiphospholipid syndrome.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a disorder characterized by recurrent venous or arterial thrombosis and/or fetal loss; involvement of cardiac valves is also seen. A seronegative variant has been described previously. We report a case of a woman with recurrent pregnancy loss, prior strokes, and a negative workup for known antiphospholipid antibodies. During her current pregnancy, she presented with acute stroke and mitral valve vegetation. Her workup for antiphospholipid syndrome and other thrombophilias remained negative even after the stroke. Her mitral valve vegetation resolved completely

Evaluated fate and effects of atrazine and lambda-cyhalothrin in vegetated and unvegetated microcosms.

Contaminants such as nutrients, metals, and pesticides can interact with constructed wetlands and existing drainage ditches used as agricultural best-management practices. Our research has shown that the presence of macrophytes and a hydrologic regime aid in the transfer and transformation of pesticides associated with agricultural runoff. This study consisted of application of both atrazine (triazine herbicide) and lambda-cyhalothrin (pyrethroid insecticide) to vegetated and unvegetated microcosms in order to measure the fate and effects of pesticides applied at suggested field application ra

[Effects of dicetel on gastrointestinal motility and vegetative dysfunction in patients with duodenal ulcer].

The great majority of patients with duodenal ulcer (DU) given a single oral dose (50 mg) of dicetel (pinaverium bromide)--a selective blocker of calcium channels--showed optimization of vegetative reactivity and vegetative support of physical and mental activities. This contributes to relief of psychovegetative syndrome of the modulation of dysfunctions of proximal gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The addition of dicetel to combined treatment of PH shortened healing of DU, relieved pain, stopped gastric and intestinal dyspepsia, corrected motor-tonic defects of the proximal GIT caused by dysfunct

VOCs fate and partitioning in vegetation: use of tree cores in groundwater analysis.

Analysis of tree cores collected from contaminated sites has shown that concentrations of VOCs in cores are related to groundwater concentrations. However, initial research was highly qualitative. To better understand the relationship of groundwater VOC concentrations to measured VOCs in tree cores, detailed understanding of contaminant behavior in vegetation is required. Work presented here investigates the interaction, with focus on the chlorinated solvents trichloroethylene, 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, and carbon tetrachloride. The sorption and desorption partitioning of these compounds betw

Biological activity of a fruit vegetable, "Anastasia green", a species of sweet pepper.

Russian green sweet pepper (Anastasia Green) was successively extracted with hexane, acetone, methanol and 70% methanol and the extracts were further separated into a total of twenty fractions by silica gel or ODS column chromatographies. The biological activities of these extracts and fractions were compared. The extracts and fractions showed higher cytotoxic activity against two human oral tumor cell lines than against normal human gingival fibroblasts, suggesting their tumor-specific action. Several fractions [H3, H4, A4] reversed the multidrug resistant gene (MDR1) against L5178 mouse T-ce

Fruit and vegetable intake and risk of cardiovascular disease: the Women's Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Prospective data relating fruit and vegetable intake to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk are sparse, particularly for women. O … : 0.37, 1.04; P: for trend = 0.07). CONCLUSION: These data suggest that higher intake of fruit and vegetables may be protective against CVD and support current dietary guidelines to increase fruit and vegetable intake.

pH-metric determination of the acid value of vegetable oils without titration.

The acid value (AV) of vegetable oils is determined without titration by using a new reagent consisting of triethanolamine in a solution of water and isopropyl alcohol. When the oil sample is mixed with the reagent in the pH-metric cell, free fatty acids from the sample are extracted into the reagent (3-4 min). The initial pH, called conditional pH'1, is measured, a standard acid (HCl) is added, and the final pH, pH'2, is measured. AV is calculated from the difference between pH'1 and pH'2. The method is applicable for quality control of vegetable oils during their production, trade, and use.

Effect of antibiotic treatment on vegetation size and complication rate in infective endocarditis.

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, with valvular destruction, and with congestive heart failure. Embolic events are more common in patients with echocardiographically discernible vegetations, especially when vegetations are > 10 mm in diameter. HYPOTHESIS: The objective of the study was to follow vegetation morphology during native valve endocarditis, to compare it with the clinical course and antibiotic treatment chosen, and to evaluate whether the impact on vegetation size and complication rate of antibiotic regimens differed in patien

The persistent vegetative state and anencephaly: problematic paradigms for discussing futility and rationing.

Medical futility has been a controversial issue for the last several years. Although anencephalic infants and patients in the persistent vegetative state (PVS) have often been suggested as paradigmatic cases for discussing the issue of medical futility, there is no consensus among physicians or ethicists that treatment of such patients is futile and courts have not supported the futility argument. Focusing on the issue of medical futility will not resolve the management issues surrounding the care of patients in PVS or anencephalic infants. Instead, an analysis of the benefits and burdens of t

Survey of British clinicians' views on management of patients in persistent vegetative state.

BACKGROUND: The best care and management of patients in persistent vegetative state (PVS) has been the subject of sustained moral and legal debate for a number of years. However, the views of clinicians in the UK involved in caring for patients in PVS are largely unknown. METHODS: A postal questionnaire was sent to 1882 consultant members of the British Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Association of British Neurologists, the Society of British Neurosurgeons, and the British Society of Rehabilitation Medicine. Their views were sought on various aspects of the management and care of PV

Non-valvular main pulmonary artery vegetation associated with aortopulmonary window.

We present a 32-year-old female with aortopulmonary window and vegetation of non-valvular main pulmonary artery. The aortopulmonary window is a rare congenital disease in which the aorta and pulmonary arteries are communicated by a defect of variable diameter. The pulmonic valve is the least commonly involved valve in bacterial endocarditis, but there is no vegetation of non-valvular main pulmonary artery in the literature. Colour duplex sonography showed an aortopulmonary window with aortic regurgitation. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrating the vegetation on the wall of main pulmona

Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography for the evaluation of cardiac tumors, thrombi, and valvular vegetations.

Echocardiography is commonly used for the detection, assessment, and diagnosis of intracardiac masses. Since the introduction of M-Mode ultrasound in 1954, the subsequent development of two-dimensional Doppler, and transesophageal echocardiographic techniques have shown clinical efficacy in the evaluation of intracardiac pathology. The various presentations of cardiac tumors, thrombi, and valvular vegetations can pose a diagnostic challenge. In addition, once a diagnosis is established, data regarding risk stratification and prognosis are often required for further management. Echocardiography

Scanning electron microscope features of rheumatic vegetations in acute rheumatic carditis.

We have studied four cases of acute rheumatic carditis at autopsy in which the cardiac valves revealed rheumatic vegetations. The features of these vegetations were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. There was a loss of the normal mosaic arrangement of endothelial cells and marked architectural modifications of the valvar collagen. These features explain well the pathologic processes of rheumatic valvitis and the infective complications, if any, thereof. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that an analysis has been made of the structure of the surface of rheumatic v

The demonstration of vegetations by echocardiography in bacterial endocarditis. An indication for early surgical intervention.

The visualization of vegetations by M-mode echocardiography in patients with infective endocarditis has been suggested to imply a poor prognosis regarding the development of major systemic emboli, congestive heart failure and the need for early surgical intervention. The question of using the finding of vegetations by echocardiography as an indication for surgery is controversial. To answer this question, 30 patients with the clinical diagnosis of endocarditis were studied by echocardiography. In 17 of the 30 (57 per cent) vegetations were present (aortic eight, mitral four, both mitral and ao

[Obstructive mitral vegetations in bacterial endocarditis. Disappearance after migration as an embolism].

An unusual form of mitral valve endocarditis was observed on echocardiography. A 49 year old female with well tolerated mitral stenosis and mild aortic incompetence contracted staphylococcal endocarditis. Pulmonary venous hypertension developed and the diastolic murmur increased. The echocardiogramme showed voluminous vegetations obstructing the stenosed mitral orifice in diastole, simulating a left atrial myxoma. An acute ischaemic episode of the lower limb occurred under antibiotic therapy. A voluminous fibrino-cruoric infected embolus was extracted from the iliac artery and a second echocar

[Vegetating endocarditis on a Hancock valve. Diagnostic value of echocardiography (author's transl)].

Vegetations of endocarditis are frequently seen at echocardiography performed in patients with infective endocarditis. The presence of such vegetations was demonstrated on a Hancock porcine heterograft inserted two years' previously. These vegetations were responsible for quite severe stenosis and had produced systemic emboli on two occasions. Histological examination after valve replacement confirmed the echographic findings.

Echocardiographic manifestations of ruptured aortic valvular leaflets in the absence of valvular vegetations.

The diagnosis of ruptured (perforated or torn) aortic valvular leaflets due to various causes has been made primarily at surgery or postmortem examination. Although angiocardiographic studies readily reveal aortic regurgitation, they rarely establish the presence of a ruptured aortic cusp as the cause of the aortic leak. Recent echocardiographic experience has brought to our attention seven patients with ruptured aortic valvular leaflets in whom the absenc of valvular vegetations was confirmed at surgery in six and at autopsy in one. The echocardiogram of the aortic root in these subjects reve
