INTRODUCTION: Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in perceiving and processing verbal and non-verbal information. It is usually accompanied by impaired academic skills leading to school dropout and emotional disturbances, resulting in significant distress and behavioral problems.
METHODS: A cognitive, academic, and emotional-behavioral assessment was performed at T0 and T1 in children and adolescents with SLD. Participants received psychotherapy and speech therapy treatment from T0 to T1.
RESULTS: In SLD, the most compromised cognit

Episodic memory impairment represents one of the hallmark clinical features of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) attributable to the degeneration of medial temporal and parietal regions of the brain. In contrast, a somewhat paradoxical profile of relatively intact episodic memory, particularly for non-verbal material, is observed in semantic dementia (SD), despite marked atrophy of the hippocampus. This retrospective study investigated the neural substrates of episodic memory retrieval in 20 patients with a diagnosis of SD and 21 disease-matched cases of AD and compared their performance

FOXG1-related syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental encephalopathy characterized by early onset hyperkinetic movement disorders, absent language, autistic features, epilepsy, and severe cognitive impairment. However, detailed evaluation of cognition and evolution of movement disorders over time have not been clearly described before. In this study, we performed whole-exome sequencing in a cohort with unknown severe encephalopathy and movement disorders, with/without autistic behaviors. We identified FOXG1 mutations in three patients. One of them had a novel mutation that has not been described

Previous studies of verbal episodic memory in pre-diagnostic Huntington's disease (HD) have yielded mixed results; some evidence suggests that memory decline is evident prior to the onset of pronounced neurological signs of HD, whereas other data indicate that memory function remains normal throughout the pre-diagnostic period. This study examines verbal episodic memory in a sample of CAG expanded individuals who have not yet been clinically diagnosed, and who represent a wide range of points along the continuum from health to disease. The Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R) was admi…

A case is reported of a patient who experienced numerous episodes of transient global amnesia (TGA) during which anterograde amnesia was less prominent than usual, and who developed a permanent selective retrograde amnesia. On formal testing, he performed well on traditional verbal memory tests, but showed marked retrograde amnesia for verbal material, including items on a famous voices recognition test. He was administered a paired-associate learning test where the names of famous personalities for which he was amnesic were associated with incongruous activities (e.g. John Newcombe-singing).

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may be accompanied by amnesia. However, the extent to which different memory subtypes are affected is unclear, as well-controlled longitudinal studies are sparse. We aimed to investigate short- and long-term effects of ECT on different aspects of memory.
METHODS: We recruited patients with depression referred to ECT (n = 31) or other treatment (n = 21) and healthy participants (n = 29). We measured autobiographical (Columbia Autobiographical Memory Interview - Short Form), verbal (Verbal Learning Test - Delayed), and visual (Rey Complex Figure Test)…

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is complex and time-consuming. The present work systematically examines the importance of items from the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) and Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) in discerning children with and without ASD. Knowledge of the most discriminative features and their underlying concepts may prove valuable for the future training tools that assist clinicians to substantiate or extenuate a suspicion of ASD in nonverbal and minimally verbal children.
METHODS: In two samples of nonverbal (N = 466) and minimally

INTRODUCTION: Few studies on social skills training essentially based on ABA techniques are dedicated to children with autism aged 5 to 10 years whereas autistic disorders can be diagnosed in very early childhood. Generally, the main criticisms about these social skills training are: shortness of programs (around 20 sessions), no manual with precise descriptions of sessions and used techniques, and a lack of generalization of the learned skills in everyday life.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the evolution (before/after) of symptoms and sociocommunicative skills of 7 children with autism and no ment

Unintentional injuries are a leading cause of death and disability for children. Those with developmental disabilities, including children affected by prenatal alcohol exposure, are at highest risk for injuries. Although teaching safety skills is recommended to prevent injury, cognitive limitations and behavioral problems characteristic of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder make teaching these skills challenging for parents and teachers. In the current study, 32 children, ages 4-10, diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and partial FAS, learned fire and street safety through c

Consistent handedness and language laterality are two of the most striking behavioral and cognitive asymmetries observed in humans. Alterations in the typical pattern of cerebral laterality, termed "anomalous dominance," is observed in left-handers and some patients with verbal learning disabilities. We undertook the study of a genetically distinct group of subjects, XXY males (Klinefelter's syndrome; KS), who demonstrate anomalous dominance in a variety of testing paradigms in order to begin to elucidate the molecular basis of anomalous dominance in this population. KS subjects manifest speci…

Cognitive and affective dysfunctions are frequent but often neglected symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). We developed the screening tool Parkinson neuropsychometric dementia assessment (PANDA) with five cognitive tasks and a short depression questionnaire. Healthy subjects and patients without cognitive impairment (PD), mild cognitive disorder (PD-MCD), or dementia (PDD) were examined. The cognition part had a specificity of 91% and a sensitivity of 90% for PDD and 77% for PDD plus PD-MCD patients. The mood questionnaire also had high sensitivity and specificity. We conclude that the PANDA

Semantic memory was evaluated in 124 epilepsy patients, including 84 with left (n=44) or right temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) (n=40) and 40 with left (n=25) or right frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) (n=15), in order to determine their verbal and visual deficits, and the neuroanatomical relationships between them. The controls were 35 healthy subjects. Semantic memory was assessed by means of Picture Naming, Picture Pointing, the verbal Pyramid and Palm Trees Test (PPTT), the visual PPTT, Object Decision Hard, and Drawing From Memory. Episodic memory was assessed by means of the Short Story, Rey's Com

The present study investigated whether yes-no questions would lead to a yes bias in young children. Four experiments were conducted in which 2- to 5-year-olds were asked comprehensible and incomprehensible yes-no questions concerning familiar and unfamiliar objects. Consistent findings were obtained: (a) 2-year-olds displayed a consistent yes bias; (b) 4- and 5-year-olds exhibited no response bias toward comprehensible questions and a nay-saying bias toward incomprehensible questions; and (c) 3-year-olds' results were mixed, suggesting that the age of 3 years is a period of developmental trans

This survey deals with two aspects of developmental dysphasia which are relevant to child psychiatry; the early diagnosis and treatment of children with developmental dysphasia, which may prevent the progression of learning and behaviour disorders, and the underlying biological causes of this neuro-developmental disorder. The pathophysiology of developmental dysphasia is complex and age-related. In the pre-verbal and early verbal stage, the severity of the clinical picture is primarily determined by concomitant motor pathology (motor dysfunction, dysarthria, general and oral dyspraxia) and by

Implicit learning is thought to play an important role in speech recognition under challenging conditions. However, auditory deprivation has been proposed to influence implicit learning, including in the visual modality, although evidence in adults with post-lingual deafness is limited. Therefore, we investigated implicit visual learning and its associations with speech recognition in adults with post-lingual deafness who use cochlear implants (CIs). Thus, this study focuses on the effects of late auditory deprivation rather than on the effects of early deprivation associated with congenital d

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has been associated with poorer cognitive performance and gre … ance was observed in cognitive domains that reflect poorer processing speed and executive function, verbal learning, attention, and working memory. These results imply that liver fibrosis could represent an early modifiable marker of cognitive vulnerability.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined cognitive function in long-term survivors with brain metastases (BM). The aim of this study was to assess performance-based cognitive function and compare it with normative samples.
METHODS: Patients with ≥2-year survival after a first-time BM diagnosis completed neuropsychological tests assessing the following neurocognitive domains: processing speed, executive functioning, mental flexibility, visual learning and memory, verbal learning and memory, attention, and working memory. Test scores were converted into standardized z-scores using normative sample…

PURPOSE: Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technology innovation is urgently needed to improve outcomes for children on the autism spectrum who are minimally verbal. One potential technology innovation is applying artificial intelligence (AI) to automate strategies such as augmented input to increase language learning opportunities while mitigating communication partner time and learning barriers. Innovation in AAC research and design methodology is also needed to empirically explore this and other applications of AI to AAC. The purpose of this report was to describe (a) the dev

BACKGROUND: Based on the developing clinical and legal literature, and using the framework adopted in draft legislation, capacity to make a valid decision about a clinically required blood test was investigated in three groups of people with a 'mental disability' (i.e. mental illness (chronic schizophrenia), 'learning disability' ('mental retardation', or intellectual or developmental disability), or, dementia) and a fourth, comparison group.
METHODS: The three 'mental disability' groups (N = 20 in the 'learning disability' group, N = 21 in each of the other two groups) were recruited through
