Secondary trauma response in emergency services systems (STRESS) project: quantifying and predicting vicarious trauma in emergency medical services personnel.

INTRODUCTION: There is a lack of literature exploring vicarious trauma (VT) in emergency medical services (EMS) personnel. VT is emotional countertransference that occurs between the clinician and patient. The presence of trauma- or stressor-related disorders could be a factor in the rising suicide rate in these clinicians. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional statewide study of American EMS personnel, using one-stage area sampling. Nine EMS agencies were selected to participate based on geographic area, who then provided data about annual call volume and mix. The Impact of Event Scale-Revised

["I tried so hard to be normal… that I ended up exhausting myself.": Forms of social exclusion experienced by young autistic adults].

Introduction Autistic people are particularly at risk of experiencing forms of violence, ostracism or discrimination, which lead to social exclusion in the course of their lives. However, very little research has addressed social exclusion from its subjective dimensions (e.g. attitudes, opinions, social representations and self-perception) and the relational contexts in which these experiences take shape and affect well-being and mental health. This article presents the results of qualitative research conducted with young autistic adults in Quebec who took part in asynchronous online discussio

A qualitative study on midwives' identity and perspectives on the occurrence of disrespect and abuse in Maputo city.

BACKGROUND: Midwifery care plays a vital role in the reduction of preventable maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity. This study aims to explore midwives' professional identity and perspectives on the occurrence of D&A in urban Mozambique. METHODS: A qualitative study took place in the central hospital of Maputo, Mozambique. Nine focus gr

Gender-transformative action as a strategy for health system strengthening: a framework for advancing equity, accountability, and resilience.

Gender inequity is embedded in the organisation, financing, leadership, and everyday practice of health systems. It shapes who receives care, who provides it, who advances into decision-making roles, whose labour is undervalued, and whose safety is treated as negotiable. While health systems are often presented as neutral institutions, they frequently reproduce the gendered hierarchies of the societies in which they operate. This viewpoint argues that gender-transformative action should be treated as a core strategy for health system strengthening rather than as a peripheral equity concern. It

Disordered eating in office workers is correlated with trauma, stress, emotional regulation, and sleep quality: a cross-sectional screening.

Eating and feeding disorders (EDs) are a heterogeneous group of pathologies accompanied by important metabolic and psychiatric comorbidities that occur most frequently among the young but also appear in adulthood. Consequently, they can have a high impact on the quality of life and productivity. In the workplace, they are associated with traumatic events, stress, and sleep problems. Office workers who are not engaged in night shifts are an ideal sample for studying the relationship between sleep problems and EDs, since the confounding factor of night work can be excluded. This study is a surve

Difference in work-related violence by nurse license type.

Nurses are at considerable risk for work-related violence. This study compared the experiences of work-related violence among registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) to quantify differences in risks and exposures and to gain insight into possible interventions. A random sample (n = 6,300) of licensed Minnesota nurses was surveyed regarding the previous 12-month period. Nurses self-reported violent events and demographic information. After adjustment for potential confounders and nonresponse, LPNs had an increased risk for both physical assault (odds ratio = 1.4; 95% confid

This research study assessed the extent to which non-physical violence is a risk factor for physical violence against workers in health care settings. More than 600 nursing staff, other clinical providers, and non-clinical staff in two health care settings completed a cross-sectional survey. For the preceding 12-month period, 72.8% of workers reported at least one incident of non-physical violence and 21.3% reported at least one incident of physical violence. Workers who had experienced non-physical violence were 7.17 times more likely to experience physical violence than those who had not. Bo
