Eleven patients with writer's cramp were studied during the performance of a series of writing and non-writing tasks. Their performance in the tasks and the intensity of contraction in the flexor and extensor muscles of the fingers and elbow (recorded electromyographically) were compared with the results from a group of matched normal controls. The patients showed highly significant increases in muscle activation especially in the triceps muscle which was overactive in all but one of the tasks undertaken. By drawing on a narrative analysis of 11 autobiographical illness memoirs, this article investigates the complexities of what it means to live with prostate cancer over a period of time. Acknowledging how cancer disrupts everyday life, we focus on the day-to-day experiences and struggles that take place inside and outside the hospital. By building on illustrative quotes from the memoirs, we discuss different facets of cancer as a lived experience. Writer's cramp is classified as a focal dystonia. Abnormal sensory-motor integration is characteristic and loss of inhibition is seen in many levels, including cortex, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Altered, irregular firing pattern of the basal ganglia, as well as push-pull system of the motor loop, probably play an important role in the pathophysiology of dystonia. First therapeutic step is providing the information of pathophysiology to the patients and advicing them to reduce the amount of writing. According to severity, local lidocaine block or medication is used in Japan.

A hand preference inventory was administered to a population of 921 Swedish college students. The questions concern writing, drawing, throwing a ball, cutting with scissors, tooth brushing, cutting with a knife, and using a hammer, each with five response alternatives: always right, mostly right, either hand, mostly left and always left.
