OBJECTIVE: Studies have demonstrated an association between ABO blood type and bleeding status. The aim of this analysis was to determine whether O blood type is associated with higher early postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) risk as compared to other blood types.
STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective case-control study, data was gathered form 4,516 deliveries occurring at our institution between 2014 and 2016. Cases were categorized into one of two groups according to women's major blood type (O or non-O), and thereafter according to minor blood type (RH positive or negative). The primary outcome was

Genetic markers in people of African ancestry and tables comparing Africans and Europeans are compiled to illustrate the blood differences. The existence of the African genetic characters, R0 (cDe), D-u and Ee (e-s, ce-s) in an Rh-Hr system are discussed. The high incidence of R0 (81.9%) in Africans is evident. Studies of ABO and the sickle cell trait in East Africa reveal the African tribes responsible for the original populating of Africa. The pygmoids of Uganda and Zaire, the Nilotes of West Nile, and the Bantu of Uganda are possibly responsible. Subgroups of A antigen in Africans and Europ

Although personality is thought to be 50% heritable, consensus has not been reached about the specific genes involved, interest in genes affecting personality and behavior continues because of the linkage of personality traits with both physical and mental illness. One hundred and twenty years of study of the ABO blood types and the genes causing them has led to more precise assignment of genotype-phenotype linkage. Countries like Japan and Korea with 100 years history of study of ABO blood groups and personality as well as other countries have published research with no consensus. Introversio

The para-Bombay phenotype is a rare H-deficient blood group variant characterized by markedly reduced or absent expression of H on red blood cells (RBCs) because of mutations in FUT1, with variable secretor status influenced by FUT2. The Bombay phenotype is relatively more common in the Indian population, but the para-Bombay phenotype remains exceedingly rare and is frequently underrecognized because of diagnostic challenges during routine serologic testing. We report molecularly confirmed para-Bombay siblings from India in whom rouleaux-induced pseudoagglutination mimicked anti-H reactiv ity.

INTRODUCTION: ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (ABOi-KT) expands the donor pool, yet baseline anti-ABO isoagglutinin titres ≥ 1:512 remain challenging and practice is highly variable. We surveyed the German transplant centres to capture current management of very high-titre ABOi candidates and centre responses to insufficient titre decline.
METHODS: Thirty-six centres were invited to complete an anonymised 19-item web-based questionnaire (January-March 2025) on (i) centre activity, (ii) isoagglutinin testing and isoagglutinin titre limits (iii) desensitisation protocol, (iv) ABO abort

OBJECTIVES: It is not always possible to access ABO-compatible platelet concentrates (PCs) for reasons such as short shelf life and not always being readily available. Therefore, blood centers have to develop strategies for the use of ABO-incompatible PCs. However, there are conflicting data regarding the safety of using ABO-incompatible platelet transfusions, especially concerning transfusion reactions.
METHODS: This multicenter, retrospective cohort study analyzed platelet transfusion records from 3 tertiary-level hospitals over a 9-year period (2016-2024). Data were extracted from institut

BACKGROUND: ABO-incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplantation alleviates the shortage of donor kidneys. However, interventions targeting blood group antibodies alone cannot fully prevent antibody-mediated rejection. We investigated how blood group antigens affect prognosis and rejection in ABOi kidney transplantation and explored their regulatory mechanisms.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 28 consecutive ABOi kidney transplant recipient-donor pairs. We performed immunohistochemical staining for A/B antigens on intraoperative donor kidney biopsies. Graft A/B antigen expression levels were asse

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: ABO-incompatible (ABO-i) liver transplantation (LT) in children is increasingly used to address organ scarcity, but concerns about immunological, vascular, and biliary complications remain. With evolving desensitization strategies and emerging pediatric data, an updated meta-analysis comparing ABO-i and ABO-compatible (ABO-c) LT is warranted.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were searched from inception to June 2026 to include studies evaluating ABO-i versus ABO-c LT in recipients ≤ 18 years of age. Primary outcomes were comparison of 1-, 3-, and 5-year patient an

BACKGROUND: ABO incompatibility is the most common blood group incompatibility in newborn babies, haemolytic disease develops in very few cases and is much milder than Rh incompatibility. In our study, we aimed to retrospectively examine the changes in platelet parameters, in addition to the expected decrease in the erythrocyte count, in immunized ABO incompatible patients, by comparing them with those in the control group.
METHODS: The demographic data and laboratory results of patients born in our hospital between November 1, 1997, and December 31, 2023, who had accessible information, were

BACKGROUND: Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) with ABO major incompatibility is characterized by transfusion dependent anemia. No standard treatment existed for PRCA following allo-HSCT yet.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study, and reported our experience with the use of avatrombopag and lower dose rituximab to treat five patients with PRCA subsequent to major ABO-incompatible allo-HSCT.
RESULTS: Five cases of PRCA were identified from 72 patients who underwent allo-HSCT with major or bidirectional A

Paired organ exchange can be used to circumvent living donor-recipient ABO incompatibilities. Herein, we present the first case of successful liver paired exchange in North America. This 2-way swap required 4 simultaneous operations: 2 living donor hepatectomies and 2 living donor liver transplants. A nondirected anonymous living donor gift initiated this domino exchange, alleviating an ABO incompatibility in the other donor-recipient pair. With careful attention to ethical and logistical issues, paired liver exchange is a feasible option to expand the donor pool for incompatible living liver

Individuals with the Bombay phenotype (Oh) in the ABO blood group system do not express the H, A, and B antigens but have no clinical symptoms. Bombay phenotype with clinical symptoms has been described in leukocyte adhesion deficiency type II (LAD II), a fucosylation disorder caused by mutations in SLC35C1. Only few LAD II patients have been described so far. Here we describe an additional patient, a 22-year old male, born to unrelated parents, presenting with inflammatory skin disease, periodontitis, growth, and mental retardation, admitted to the department of dentistry for treatment under

BACKGROUND: The Bombay phenotype is a rare genetic trait which is characterized by the absence of A, B and H antigens on red cells as well as in body secretions. The serum shows the presence of antibodies against antigen H. Patients with this rare blood type are not easily transfusable. We had observed a woman aged 18, at the 20th week of pregnancy, native of Sri Lanka, with an IgG and IgM class anti-H. We report the case and the clinical issues arisen.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The determination of ABO, Rh[D] group, the indirect antiglobulin test (IAT) were performed in tube techniques and in n

The accurate estimation of ABO antibody titers is of the utmost importance in organ transplants involving ABO incompatibility. We aim to compare five different methods of titration and analyze the data. Samples of 48 O group blood donors who donated during the month of December 2015 to January 2016 in our institution were subjected to ABO antibody titration by five different methods: immediate spin (IS) tube titer, antihuman globulin phase tube titer, Coomb's gel card titer, gel card titer after dithiotreitol (DTT) treatment of plasma, and the solid phase red cell adherence method. The mean nu

BACKGROUND: During major ABO-mismatched bone marrow transplant (BMT), the infusion of incompatible red blood cells (RBCs) that are present in the bone marrow graft can cause adverse events from hemolysis. RBC depletion of the bone marrow graft can decrease this risk, but the optimal method to prevent hemolysis is unclear.
PROCEDURE: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent major ABO-mismatched BMT at a pediatric center and had RBC depletion with either hydroxyethyl starch (HES) sedimentation or Ficoll density gradient separation. Postinfusion hemoglobinuria and crea
