An electrophysiologic indication of defective information storage in childhood autism.

We used a combined behavioral and electrophysiological technique to test the hypothesis that storage of information is impaired in childhood autism. Endogenous event-related potentials associated with the random deletion of stimuli within a regular train of auditory or visual stimuli were examined in three autistic and three normal children. We found that all subjects were able to detect the stimulus deletions, but cortical potentials associated with stimulus omissions were smaller or absent in the autistic subjects. These results are consistent with dysfunction within the system that includes

Cochlear implants and electrical brainstem stimulation in sensorineural hearing loss.

Cochlear implants and multichannel auditory brainstem implants enable patients with bilateral total or profound hearing loss to receive at least acoustic information. Both types of prosthesis are based on electrical stimulation of the auditory pathway. Different speech coding strategies and the number of electrodes used may influence the postoperative results. The preoperative evaluation of patients is of utmost importance. The cochlear implant is suitable for patients with hearing loss due to inner ear disorders, but who have functioning hearing nerve. Patients with a defect of the hearing ne

[Biofeedback training and functional electrostimulation for improving incontinence in children with anal atresia].

Eleven children with anal incontinence following a pull-through operation for anorectal agenesis (4 low, 7 high anomalies) were treated with a conservative continence training program (optic/acoustic biofeedback, transcutaneous electrical stimulation, physical therapy, contraction exercises and sensibility training). All patients with one exception showed subjective and objective improvement of continence. Sphincter contraction increased by 80% in high and by 40% in low anomalies. For a short time electrostimulation provided an improvement of up to 20% in sphincter pressure. One additional suc

[Dynamic study of brain stem evoked potentials in cerebral aneurysms].

Eleven patients with arterial and arteriovenous aneurysms of the cerebral vessels were subjected to 30 repeated examinations of truncal evoked potentials (TEP) to acoustic stimulation. The examination was conducted in the acute stage of subarachnoid hemorrhages, before and after surgical intervention. It is shown that changes in TEP may be recorded along with improvement, deterioration, stable disorders. From the degree and character of TEP disorders, not only the trend of changes in the functional state of the brain trunk can be judged but also the processes underlying these disorders (ischem…

Effects of the visual modality on acoustic reflex magnitude.

Acoustic reflex magnitude for nine normal hearing subjects was measured with eyes opened and closed under three visual modality conditions: (1) in darkness; (2) in light without the ability to focus; and (3) in light with the ability to focus. Reflex magnitude decreased with eyes open for all three visual modality conditions; however, greater magnitude reduction occurred when the eyes were able to focus. Magnitude reduction for the three visual conditions was: 7% in darkness; 11% without visual focusing; and 20% with visual focusing. Additional data presented suggests reflex magnitude changes

Bioelectrical cochlear noise and its contralateral suppression: relation to background activity of the eighth nerve and effects of sedation and anesthesia.

The bioelectrical activity of the cochlea, without any ipsilateral acoustic stimulation, was recorded in awake guinea pigs (GPs) between electrodes chronically implanted at the round window (RW) and the skull. Measuring its power in the band centered around 1.0 kHz (0.5-2.5 kHz) provided an indirect measure of the ensemble background (EBA) activity of the eighth nerve. Contralateral white-noise (CLWN) stimulation reduced this EBA, presumably by activation of medial olivocochlear fibers. The aim of the investigation was to validate measurements of EBA and of its contralateral suppression in ord…

A comparison of acoustic reflex and auditory brain stem response screening of high-risk infants.

This investigation was undertaken to explore the feasibility of screening for hearing impairment in an intensive care nursery population with a combined acoustic stapedius reflex-ABR approach. Acoustic reflex threshold measurements (AR) were made on intensive care nursery patients in an existing ABR screening program. Pass-fail results were determined for the two methods, separately and in combination. AR screening identified all 10 ears that failed the ABR screen. The cost savings of screening with a combined AR-ABR approach was determined for various pass-fail criteria. The results suggest t

Intraoperative Evaluation of Essential Vocal Tremor in Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery.

Purpose Essential vocal tremor (EVT) is a prevalent and difficult-to-manage voice disorder. There is evidence that deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral intermediate nucleus (Vim) of the thalamus may be beneficial for treating EVT. The objective of this preliminary investigation was to conduct intraoperative voice assessments during Vim-DBS implantation in order to evaluate immediate voice outcomes in medication-refractory essential tremor patients with co-occurring EVT. Method Seven adult subjects diagnosed with EVT undergoing Vim-DBS surgery participated in this investigation. Voice sa

Effect of frequency mismatch and band partitioning on vocal tract length perception in vocoder simulations of cochlear implant processing.

The vocal tract length (VTL) of a speaker is an important voice cue that aids speech intelligibility in multi-talker situations. However, cochlear implant (CI) users demonstrate poor VTL sensitivity. This may be partially caused by the mismatch between frequencies received by the implant and those corresponding to places of stimulation along the cochlea. This mismatch can distort formant spacing, where VTL cues are encoded. In this study, the effects of frequency mismatch and band partitioning on VTL sensitivity were investigated in normal hearing listeners with vocoder simulations of CI proce

The Value of Electrically Evoked Stapedius Reflex in Determining the Maximum Comfort Level of a Cochlear Implant.

BACKGROUND: One of the most important steps for good user performance with a cochlear implant (CI) is activation and programming, aimed at determining the dynamic range. In adults, current levels are determined by psychophysical measures. In babies, small children, or individuals with multiple disorders, this procedure requires techniques that may provide inconsistent responses because of auditory inexperience or the age of the child, making it a very difficult process that demands the collaboration of both the patient and the family. PURPOSE: To study the relationship between the electricall

Deep learning models to remix music for cochlear implant users.

The severe hearing loss problems that some people suffer can be treated by providing them with a surgically implanted electrical device called cochlear implant (CI). CI users struggle to perceive complex audio signals such as music; however, previous studies show that CI recipients find music more enjoyable when the vocals are enhanced with respect to the background music. In this manuscript source separation (SS) algorithms are used to remix pop songs by applying gain to the lead singing voice. This work uses deep convolutional auto-encoders, a deep recurrent neural network, a multilayer perc

Electrical stimulation levels and electrode impedance values in children using the Med-El Combi 40+ cochlear implant: a one year follow-up.

The present study was designed to follow changes in electrical stimulation levels and electrode impedance values (EIV) in children using the Med-El Combi 40+ cochlear implant (CI) during the first 12 months of implant use. The maps of 24 prelingually deaf children implanted at a mean age of 5.9 years (range 1-15.9 years) using the TEMPO+ speech processor programmed with CIS+ strategy were examined at five time points: initial stimulation, and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months post-initial stimulation. Most comfortable levels (M) and electrode impedance values (EIV) were analyzed according to three cochle

Rhythmic movements mimicking tremor under different metronome conditions.

Rhythmic movements mimicking tremor are commonly used as a control condition in tremor physiology studies, yet the influence of different metronome modalities on performance has not been systematically examined. We compared auditory, visual, and combined auditory-visual metronome guidance in terms of frequency accuracy, temporal stability, and persistence following cueing removal to identify a suitable metronome condition for tremor simulation. Nineteen healthy volunteers performed 2 Hz thumb abduction-adduction movements under auditory, visual, and combined auditory-visual metronome condition

Metacognition in the audiovisual McGurk illusion: perceptual and causal confidence.

Almost all decisions in everyday life rely on multiple sensory inputs that can come from common or independent causes. These situations invoke perceptual uncertainty about environmental properties and the signals' causal structure. Using the audiovisual McGurk illusion, this study investigated how observers formed perceptual and causal confidence judgements in information integration tasks under causal uncertainty. Observers were presented with spoken syllables, their corresponding articulatory lip movements or their congruent and McGurk combinations (e.g. auditory B/P with visual G/K). Observ

The effects of estradiol levels on crossmodal perception: a study on the sound induced flash illusion in healthy and menstrually related migraine individuals.

OBJECTIVE: The sound-induced flash illusion (SIFI) is a valid paradigm to study multisensorial perception. In the "fission" SIFI, multiple flashes are perceived when observing a single flash paired with two or more beeps. SIFI is largely dependent on visual and acoustic cortex excitability; in migraine, dysfunctional cortical excitability affects SIFI perception. Since estrogen peak occurring during ovulation can increase neuronal excitability, the present study aims to verify whether cortical excitability shifts linked to the menstrual cycle could influence SIFI. METHODS: In a comparative pr

Continuous theta burst stimulation over left and right supramarginal gyri demonstrates their involvement in auditory feedback control of vocal production.

The supramarginal gyrus (SMG) has been implicated in auditory-motor integration for vocal production. However, whether the SMG is bilaterally or unilaterally involved in auditory feedback control of vocal production in a causal manner remains unclear. The present event-related potential (ERP) study investigated the causal roles of the left and right SMG to auditory-vocal integration using neuronavigated continuous theta burst stimulation (c-TBS). Twenty-four young adults produced sustained vowel phonations and heard their voice unexpectedly pitch-shifted by ±200 cents after receiving active or

Differential attention-dependent adjustment of frequency, power and phase in primary sensory and frontoparietal areas.

Continuously prioritizing behaviourally relevant information from the environment for improved stimulus processing is a crucial function of attention. In the current MEG study, we investigated how ongoing oscillatory activity of both sensory and non-sensory brain regions are differentially impacted by attentional focus. Low-frequency phase alignment of neural activity in primary sensory areas, with respect to attended/ignored features has been suggested to support top-down prioritization. However, phase adjustment in frontoparietal regions has not been widely studied, despite general implicati

Neurofeedback Modulation of the Sound-induced Flash Illusion Using Parietal Cortex Alpha Oscillations Reveals Dependency on Prior Multisensory Congruency.

Spontaneous neural oscillations are key predictors of perceptual decisions to bind multisensory signals into a unified percept. Research links decreased alpha power in the posterior cortices to attention and audiovisual binding in the sound-induced flash illusion (SIFI) paradigm. This suggests that controlling alpha oscillations would be a way of controlling audiovisual binding. In the present feasibility study we used MEG-neurofeedback to train one group of subjects to increase left/right and another to increase right/left alpha power ratios in the parietal cortex. We tested for changes in au
