Positron emission tomographic imaging of acoustic neuromas.

Positron emission tomography (PET) examination with both [11C]methyl-l-methionine (Met) and [18F]fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG) was performed in the same patients with acoustic neuroma wherever possible in order to compare the usefulness of the two methods. The study included six patients who visited the Osaka City University Hospitals, between April 1994 and October 1998, for complaints associated with acoustic neuroma. All patients were examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Met-PET. Four patients were examined by FDG-PET. The tumor's region of highest accumulation was selected as the

Acoustic tumor growth: implications for treatment choices.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of acoustic neuroma (AN) growth is essential for treatment planning. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 119 patients with AN (mean age, 65 years; range, 37-84 years) followed with interval magnetic resonance imagings (MRIs) was performed. Change in maximum tumor dimension as a function of follow-up period was analyzed. RESULTS: Overall, maximum tumor dimension increased >2 mm in only 30% of patients. Of those that grew, the mean growth rate was 3.8 mm/year (maximum, 25 mm/year). Age, gender, and laterality did not predict growth. Most tumors that grew (86.1 %) were <2

Endoscopy of the posterior fossa and dissection of acoustic neuroma.

OBJECT: The authors evaluated the importance of endoscopes in eliminating the disadvantages of the posterior fossa approach, such as the lack of adequate visualization of the lateral aspect of the internal acoustic canal (IAC). METHODS: Between 1989 and 1998, 32 patients underwent removal of acoustic neuroma (AN) via a combined retro-sigmoid-retrolabyrinthine approach. Endoscopes were used at different stages of the operation, and their use was evaluated with regard to elimination of the disadvantages of the posterior fossa approach. All patients in whom AN had been diagnosed underwent surger

Acoustic performance and clinical use of a fibreoptic hydrophone.

Initial clinical experience with the use of an optical fibre hydrophone for in vivo ultrasound dosimetry is reported. The hydrophone, originally described by Beard and Mills (1997), operates as an extrinsic, low-finesse Fabry-Perot optical sensor where acoustically-induced thickness changes in a polymer film modulate the phase difference between light beams reflected from the two surfaces of the film. The pressure waveforms from the sensor are compared with those from a calibrated piezoelectric polymer membrane hydrophone. The sensor is found to have a frequency resonance at around 12 MHz, cor

Acoustic voice analysis in patients with essential tremor.

To quantify several acoustic features of the voice in patients with essential tremor (ET), 28 patients and 28 age- and sex-matched controls were studied. ET severity was assessed with the rating scale for tremor of Fahn, Tolosa, and Marín. The Computerized Speech Lab 4300 program (Kay Elemetrics) was used. Two-second samples of a sustained /a/ and a sentence were captured with a microphone and laryngograph equipment. Measures included fundamental frequency (F0), frequency perturbation (jitter, Koike algorithm), intensity perturbation (shimmer, Horii algorithm), and harmonic-to-noise ratio (H/N

Acoustic neuroma surgery and delayed facial palsy.

Delayed onset of facial palsy is possibly an underestimated but distressing complication of acoustic neuroma surgery. The incidence of this complication reported in the literature has varied from 11.7 to 41%. This study reviewed retrospectively 60 primary acoustic neuroma surgeries performed by a single neurotologist. The delayed onset of facial dysfunction was defined according to the guidelines described by of Lalwani Butt, Jackler, Pitts and Jingling in 1995. They considered either a deterioration of facial function from normal to abnormal or an increased severity of the degree of facial pa

A case of abducens neurinoma mimicking acoustic neurinoma.

Neurinoma arising from the abducens nerve independent of neurofibromatosis has been rarely reported in the existing literature. We present a case of abducens neurinoma which was confirmed during a surgical excision. A 31-year-old female had experienced a hearing disturbance for the past 8 months. Abduction of the right eye ball was almost full. Magnetic resonance images showed a tumor having a size of 44 x 33 X 33 mm at the right cerebellopontine angle. Neuro-otological examination revealed the findings specific to acoustic neurinoma. Surgical excision confirmed that the tumor originated from

Stereotactic radiosurgery for acoustic neuroma: a Canadian perspective.

Stereotactically delivered radiation is now an accepted treatment for patients with acoustic neuroma. In some cases, patient preference may be the reason for its selection, while in others neurosurgeons may select it for patients who are elderly or have significant risk factors for conventional surgery. The majority of patients with acoustic neuroma treatment with stereotactic radiosurgery have been treated with the Gamma Knife, with follow ups of over 25 years in some instances. Other radiosurgery modalities utilizing the linear accelerator have been developed and appear promising, but there

Significance of hearing preservation in acoustic neuroma surgery.

In the past 10 years, 43 patients with acoustic neuroma have been operated on by the middle cranial fossa approach. In all cases, meticulous care was taken to preserve the cochlear function regardless of the degree of preoperative hearing disorder. Thirty-nine of 43 patients had various degrees of residual hearing, hearing was preserved in 16 of these (41%). The best result was obtained in patients with a tumor located less than 1 cm from the porus. The hearing preservation rate was 64% (11/17). The patients recovered hearing acuity quite well, especially at low frequencies in 2 cases who had

Autocorrelation of acoustic signals from the temporomandibular joint.

Although there have been many investigations of TMJ sounds in the time and frequency domains, no previous reports have been found of investigations of the autocorrelation spectra of these sounds. In the present study, TMJ sounds were digitized at 1.7 kHz and 300 ms samples containing either clicks (single short duration sounds), crepitus (long duration continuous sounds) or creaks (a series of two or more clicks) were selected. These samples were compared with sounds of known origin: tooth impact sounds, frictional sounds elicited by scratching the head, and bruxing sounds resulting from stick

Variations in adductor spasmodic dysphonia: acoustic evidence.

Acoustic analysis was used to gain information about the normal, as well as the abnormal acoustic events associated with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD). This analysis was completed to determine whether specific acoustic events could be used to differentiate the voice of individuals with ADSD from those with normal voice. A group comparison between 14 women diagnosed with ADSD and 14 women (age-matched) with no evidence of vocal pathology or vocal dysfunction was completed. Phonatory breaks, aperiodicity, and frequency shifts, acoustic parameters previously identified in ADSD, were found t

Velocity dispersion of acoustic waves in cancellous bone.

Measurement of ultrasonic attenuation and velocity in cancellous bone are being applied to aid diagnosis of women with high fracture risk due to osteoporosis. However, velocity dispersion in cancellous bone has received little attention up to now. The overall goal of this research was to characterize the velocity dispersion of human cancellous bone based on a spectral analysis of ultrasound transmitted through the bone specimens. We have followed a systematic approach, beginning with the investigation of a test material, moving on to the investigation of bone specimens. Particular attention is

[The influence of contralateral acoustic stimulation on distortion products].

The suppressor effect of contralateral broad-band white noise stimulation at 60 dB SPL on distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) from 40 human ears was examined. The sample was composed of 9 females and 11 males, age 21-28 years. All the ears had DPOAEs. The 2-6 kHz bands had an incidence of 100%, but 0.7 kHz was found in only 27%. Eighty-eight percent of the frequency points recorded had an amplitude of more than 3 dB SPL over background noise. Nevertheless, DPOAE amplitude decreased for frequencial bands 1 to 6 kHz when contralateral acoustic stimulation was employed. However, the

Glottal characteristics of female speakers: acoustic correlates.

The aim of the research reported in this paper is to formulate a set of acoustic parameters of the voicing source that reflect individual differences in the voice qualities of female speakers. Theoretical analysis and observations of experimental data suggest that a more open glottal configuration results in a glottal volume-velocity waveform with relatively greater low-frequency and weaker high-frequency components, compared to a waveform produced with a more adducted glottal configuration. The more open glottal configuration also leads to a greater source of aspiration noise and larger bandw
