Postsmolt change in numbers of acetylcholinesterase-positive cells in the pineal organ of the Pacific coho salmon.

We have examined the occurrence of acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-positive cells in the pineal organ of different developmental stages of the Pacific coho salmon. Large numbers of AChE cells were present in freshwater living alevins, in all stages of presmolts (n = 307-544), and in adult spawners (n = 696-1774), whereas seawater-living postmolts displayed a total lack of labeled cells. The AChE-reactive cells were evenly distributed within the pineal end-vesicle and stalk of the presmolts and adults. However, the AChE-positive cells that occurred in the pineal stalk were of a smaller type and mor

Short-bowel syndrome: a review of the role of nutrition support.

Advances in long-term venous access devices and in parenteral nutrition solutions have made it possible for patients with severe short bowel syndrome to survive and to live in our society. The spectrum of this disease is such that some patients may be able to lessen their dependence or even become free from parenteral therapy. This review will discuss the role of nutrition support in the patient with short bowel syndrome.

Effects of pre-exposures to a rotating optokinetic drum on adaptation to motion sickness.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of two different pre-exposure procedures on adaptation to motion sickness in a rotating circular vection drum. The 45 subjects were randomly divided into three groups. The control group only had a standard 16-min exposure to the drum rotating at 60 degrees/s with no pre-exposure. The incremental exposure group had two separated 4-min pre-exposure periods at 15 degrees/s and 30 degrees/s in the rotating drum immediately prior to the standard 16-min exposure period in the drum rotating at 60 degrees/s. The abrupt-exposure group had the sam

Vergence adaptation maintains heterophoria in normal binocular vision.

This investigation sought to determine whether vergence adaptation serves to maintain orthophoria or heterophoria in normal binocular vision. While wearing prisms which neutralized their nearpoint (40 cm) heterophorias, 27 of 30 nonstrabismic subjects adapted from their prismatically created orthophoria toward their habitual heterophoria. Three subjects showed no adaptive response. A symptom questionnaire distributed to these subjects determined that the maintenance of heterophoria by vergence adaptation is: characteristic of normal and comfortable binocular vision, and neither an entirely nec

Effects of surrogate mothering on physiologic stabilization in transitional newborns.

This experimental study was conducted to determine whether surrogate mothering during the first hours of life will affect physiologic stabilization in the transitional newborn. Two groups of 8 normal newborns were studied. The treatment was given on cue and consisted of rocking, cuddling, visual and verbal interaction, and non-nutritive sucking to satiety. The control group received routine nursing care. The experimental group's mean axillary temperature correlated with increasing age (r = +.91, p less than .001) and leveled at 2 hours of life at 98.2 degrees F (36.8 degrees C). Control group

Prevention of motion sickness in flight maneuvers, aided by transfer of adaptation effects acquired in the laboratory: ten consecutive referrals.

Ten flyers, grounded because of nausea and vomiting, were referred as potential candidates for adaptation to cross-coupled angular accelerations in a slow-rotation room; such adaptation has been shown to "transfer" to flight maneuvers. There was no opportunity to attempt treatment in two candidates. Among the remaining eight, five regained flight status (62.5%); follow-up periods of those five candidates ranged from 10 to 27 months. In one of the three remaining candidates, a satisfactory level of adaptation was achieved but more than 4 months elapsed before his assignment to a duty squadron.

Auditory and vestibular hair cell stereocilia: relationship between functionality and inner ear disease.

The stereocilia of the inner ear are unique cellular structures which correlate anatomically with distinct cochlear functions, including mechanoelectrical transduction, cochlear amplification, adaptation, frequency selectivity and tuning. Their function is impaired by inner ear stressors, by various types of hereditary deafness, syndromic hearing loss and inner ear disease (e.g. Ménière's disease). The anatomical and physiological characteristics of stereocilia are discussed in relation to inner ear malfunctions.

Hormones in the critically ill patient: to intervene or not to intervene?

Critically ill patients show a variety of hormonal changes that appear to differ considerably in acute and prolonged critical illness. Whether these endocrine alterations serve as physiological adaptation or contribute to further deterioration remains an intriguing question. We review the recent literature and discuss whether measuring circulating hormone concentrations, performing stimulation tests, and intervening with hormone substitution could contribute to the recovery of critically ill patients.

[Compensating presbyopia: a new physiological progressive lens (author's transl)].

After discussing the functional disadvantages arising after correction of presbyopia with uni--or multifocal lenses, the authors describe the optical and physiological advantages of a lens with progressively increasing power. The principal qualities of these physiologically progressive lenses are studies, and the results of a preliminary survey concerning their use are analysed. The indications for, and adaptation and tolerance of these lenses are outlined.

Genetic and training adaptations in the Haenyeo divers of Jeju, Korea.

Natural selection and relative isolation have shaped the genetics and physiology of unique human populations from Greenland to Tibet. Another such population is the Haenyeo, the all-female Korean divers renowned for their remarkable diving abilities in frigid waters. Apnea diving induces considerable physiological strain, particularly in females diving throughout pregnancy. In this study, we explore the hypothesis that breath-hold diving has shaped physiological and genetic traits in the Haenyeo. We identified pronounced bradycardia during diving, a likely training effect. We paired natural se

[Physiological changes in microgravity].

Microgravity affects the different organ systems to various degrees. In particular, a thoracocephalic fluid shift occurs through suppression of the hydrostatic gradient. Sensory conflict leads to space motion sickness, which is frequent early in the flight, and the musculo-skeletal system is perturbed by the lack of stimuli. The respiratory system seems to be less affected. These changes do not seem to impair health or performance. Humans seem able to adapt to long-term exposure to microgravity, but disorders can occur on return to Earth. In-flight preventive measures need be developed.

Resource availability and predator cues shape within- and transgenerational reaction norms.

The main dilemma facing prey is how to reduce predation risk while acquiring resources. Phenotypic plasticity, by modulating traits for acquiring resources and for defences, is a key process driving this trade-off. While there is ample evidence that predator-induced within-generational plasticity depends on resources, the relationship between resources and predator-induced transgenerational plasticity (TGP) remains understudied. This study investigated how predator exposure and resource availability influence within-generational plasticity and TGP. We based our predictions on theories related

Comparative genomics of Photobacterium damselae from Penaeus (Marsupenaeus) japonicus: insights into pathogenicity and adaptation.

Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae (PDD), a halophilic, Gram-negative bacterium of the family Vibrionaceae, infects a wide range of aquatic organisms. PDD isolates originating from fish have been characterized in detail, but much less is known about those infecting invertebrates. Currently, only 3 complete PDD genomes isolated from Kuruma shrimp Penaeus (Marsupenaeus) japonicus from Japan are publicly available, severely limiting comparative studies of host adaptation. To address this, we present complete, plasmid-resolved genome assemblies of 4 novel PDD strains (TUMSAT-PD1, -PD2, -PD3,

Adaptive characteristics of leaf phenotypic plasticity and integration in Calamagrostis angustifolia under long-term nitrogen addition.

Based on a long-term nitrogen (N) addition experiment in the Sanjiang Plain wetland, we measured leaf photosynthetic physiology, morphological structure, and ecological stoichiometric characteristics of the dominant species Calamagrostis angustifolia among three treatments: control (0 g N·m-2·a-1), low N (4 g N·m-2·a-1), and high N (8 g N·m-2·a-1). We elucidated the response patterns and adaptive strategies of its functional traits after 14 years chronic N inputs. The results showed that 14 leaf functional traits responded differently to long-term N addition. Under the low N treatment, leaf ni

Inferring Adaptation at Community Composition Level From the Relationship Between Succession Rate and Global Change Intensity.

In response to anthropogenic environmental changes, biological communities often undergo compositional changes, which are traditionally thought to represent adaptation. However, this hypothesis and its mechanism remain surprisingly underexplored. In this study, we conducted a 10-year nitrogen deposition experiment in the Eurasian steppe, manipulating nine intensities under two management strategies (fencing or mowing). As the intensity increased from 0-20 to 50 g N m-2 yr-1, the succession rates of both plant and soil microbial communities first increased but then decreased, implying that high

Root adaptive strategies of Pinus koraiensis after introducing to the Daxing'an Mountains and the environmental driving factors.

To reveal root adaptive mechanisms of Pinus koraiensis after being introduced to the Daxing'an Mountains, we used 50-year-old P. koraiensis plantations in the introduction areas (Nanmu and Jiagedaqi) as study objects, with the natural distribution area (Dailing) as the control. We analyzed the regional variation characteristics, resource trade-off strategies, and key environmental driving factors of functional traits of first- to third-order fine roots. The results showed that, compared with the natural distribution area, the third-order root tissue density in the Nanmu decreased significantly
