BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) frequently has pulmonary metastasis (PM). Given limited systemic therapy options, these metastases are often treated with pulmonary metastasis-directed local therapy (PM-LT), although with unknown impact on overall survival (OS). This single institution, retrospective cohort study investigated the survival outcomes of PM-LT versus no PM-LT in ACC.
METHODS: ACC patients with at least one PM (≥5 mm) were included. PM-LT was metastasectomy or radiotherapy. Clinicopathologic characteristics were compared between patients with and without PM-LT. Primary e

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of the breast is a rare and distinctive subset of breast cancer that presents significant diagnostic challenges due to its histological diversity and poorly defined molecular traits. AdCC is characterized by the MYB-NFIB fusion, which leads to MYB overexpression and activation of oncogenic downstream pathways, constituting a key disease mechanism. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to detect MYB rearrangement has become a critical tool for diagnosing this tumor. However, emerging evidence suggests MYB activation in breast AdCC occurs through multiple mech

Intraosseous adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the mandible is an exceedingly rare malignancy. Its subtle onset and aggressive biological behavior, characterized by perineural invasion, present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We present a case involving a 68-year-old male who experienced persistent pain and swelling in the right hemimandible. Imaging studies using computed tomography (CT) revealed an ill-defined, osteolytic lesion affecting the right hemimandible, leading to cortical destruction. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exhibited an enhancing mass in the right hemim

BACKGROUND: Perineural invasion (PNI) is a prevalent phenomenon in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC). Nevertheless, the regulatory mechanism of PNI is largely elusive.
METHODS: We detected Apolipoprotein D (ApoD) expression and further determined its role in SACC progression. Subsequently, the contributions of SACC-derived ApoD on neurite outgrowth of dorsal root ganglions (DRGs) cells were explored. Moreover, a series of in vivo assays were conducted to elucidate the role of ApoD in the SACC PNI process.
RESULTS: We observed a dramatic up-regulation of ApoD in the SACC associated wit

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a malignancy most commonly found in the major salivary glands. It can, however, arise from minor salivary glands throughout the upper aerodigestive tract. It is typically slow-growing and asymptomatic, though presentation varies with tumor location, pattern of infiltration, and degree of perineural invasion. ACC is characterized as an aggressive malignancy due to high rates of local recurrence and distant metastasis, with the lungs, bone, and liver commonly implicated. ACC spreading to the internal auditory canal (IAC) is highly unusual and has not been report

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is considered one of the most common destructive types of malignant salivary gland tumor that have high affinity to perineural invasion (PNI). This study was conducted to access different histological features of AdCC, and assessment of the immunohistochemical expression of CDC-7.
METHODS: Thirty formalin-fixed paraffin incorporated tissue blocks of AdCC were classified according to the WHO histopathological types. The immune-expression of CDC-7 positive area was evaluated according to percentage area as following: Negative = 0 %, Weak = 1-10 %, Mod

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare and malignant tumor of the salivary glands. Despite its slow-growing nature, this clinical entity is notorious for presenting with distant metastasis (DM) which significantly worsens patient outcomes. The role of surgery in patients with ACC and distant metastasis (DM) remains controversial.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 47 patients with ACC who underwent surgery for the primary tumor and presented with DM at baseline or developed DM during follow-up. We compared survival outcomes between patients with DM at baseline (Gr

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential survival advantages associated with chemoradiotherapy (CRT) compared to radiotherapy (RT) as standalone modalities in the treatment of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the salivary glands. Patients diagnosed with resected salivary gland ACC were retrospectively enrolled and categorized into two groups based on the type of adjuvant therapy received. The overall survival outcomes between the CRT and RT cohorts were evaluated using a multivariable Cox model. Post propensity score-matching, a total of 114 patients (57 in each treatment group)

Tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare malignancy. We report the case of a 65-year-old male who presented to our department due to a 3-month history of mild dysphagia without other associated symptoms. The neck, laryngeal, and hypopharyngeal examinations were normal. Ultrasound showed hypertrophy and marked hypoechogenicity of the left thyroid lobe without suspicious nodules. Fine needle aspiration of the hypoechogenic area revealed an adenoid cystic carcinoma. A tracheal origin was then suspected and it was confirmed by a flexible bronchoscopy that showed a tumor located in the proximal

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea (ACC-T) is an extremely rare cancer of the central bronchial system. It is usually associated with an excellent prognosis. Surgery is the standard treatment for resectable tumors, while radiation therapy is used for unresectable tumors or medically inoperable patients. Radiation therapy can be delivered with photons, protons, or carbon ion therapy. In this report, we review a case of unresectable ACC-T in a middle-aged female patient who was treated with radiation therapy and review the potential benefits of the different types of radiation thera

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an uncommon malignant epithelial tumor of the salivary and lacrimal glands. Orbital ACC is rare, originating commonly from the lacrimal gland, with only a few cases reported without lacrimal gland involvement. Deep orbital ACC may be associated with extension into skull base structures, and further intracranial invasion.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 47-year-old gentleman who presented with insidious onset of bilateral proptosis, left ophthalmoplegia, and loss of vision. Imaging revealed left orbital infiltrative mass with intrac
