Involvement of catecholaminergic medullary pathways in cardiovascular responses to acute changes in circulating volume.

Water deprivation and hypernatremia are major challenges for water and sodium homeostasis. Cellular integrity requires maintenance of water and sodium concentration within narrow limits. This regulation is obtained through engagement of multiple mechanisms and neural pathways that regulate the volume and composition of the extracellular fluid. The purpose of this short review is to summarize the literature on central neural mechanisms underlying cardiovascular, hormonal and autonomic responses to circulating volume changes, and some of the findings obtained in the last 12 years by our laborato

Toward an agreement on terminology of nuclear and subnuclear divisions of the motor thalamus.

The nomenclature most commonly applied to the motor-related nuclei of the human thalamus differs substantially from that applied to the thalamus of other primates, from which most knowledge of input-output connections is derived. Knowledge of these connections in the human is a prerequisite for stereotactic neurosurgical approaches designed to alleviate movement disorders by the placement of lesions in specific nuclei. Transfer to humans of connectional information derived from experimental studies in nonhuman primates requires agreement about the equivalence of nuclei in the different species

K252a Prevents Microglial Activation Induced by Anoxic Stimulation of Carotid Bodies in Rats.

Inducing carotid body anoxia through the administration of cyanide can result in oxygen deprivation. The lack of oxygen activates cellular responses in specific regions of the central nervous system, including the Nucleus Tractus Solitarius, hypothalamus, hippocampus, and amygdala, which are regulated by afferent pathways from chemosensitive receptors. These receptors are modulated by the brain-derived neurotrophic factor receptor TrkB. Oxygen deprivation can cause neuroinflammation in the brain regions that are activated by the afferent pathways from the chemosensitive carotid body. To invest…

Effects of two anticholinergic drugs, trospium chloride and biperiden, on motility and evoked potentials of the oesophagus.

BACKGROUND: Anticholinergic drugs are known to impair the motor function of the oesophagus but their effects on the oesophageal afferent pathways are unknown. AIM: To determine the effects of a peripherally-acting (trospium chloride) and a centrally-acting (biperiden) anticholinergic drug on the motility and the evoked potentials of the oesophagus. METHODS: Nine healthy volunteers were randomized to receive 1.2 mg trospium chloride (TC), 5 mg biperiden (BIP) or saline i.v. Primary peristalsis was elicited by swallowing a 5 mL water bolus and secondary peristalsis by insufflation of 20 mL air…

Neurotransmission and neuromodulation in the chemosensory carotid body.

The mammalian carotid body is a small chemosensory organ that helps maintain the chemical composition of arterial blood via reflex control of ventilation. Thus, in response to decreased PO2 (hypoxia), increased PCO2 (hypercapnia), or decreased pH (acidity), chemoreceptor glomus or type I cells become stimulated and release neuroactive agents that excite apposed sensory terminals of the carotid sinus nerve. The resulting increase in afferent discharge ultimately leads to corrective changes in ventilation so as to maintain blood gas and pH homeostasis. Recent evidence that the organ can also sen

Triple network activation causes tinnitus in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss: A model-based volume-entropy analysis.

Tinnitus can be defined as the conscious perception of phantom sounds in the absence of corresponding external auditory signals. Tinnitus can develop in the setting of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), but the underlying mechanism is largely unknown. Using electroencephalography, we investigated differences in afferent node capacity between 15 SSNHL patients without tinnitus (NT) and 30 SSNHL patients with tinnitus (T). Where the T group showed increased afferent node capacity in regions constituting a "triple brain network" [default mode network (DMN), central executive network (CEN)

Central Nervous System Processing of Emotions in Children with Fecal Incontinence and Constipation.

OBJECTIVE: Fecal incontinence and constipation are common disorders in childhood. The enteric nervous system and the central nervous system are highly interactive along the brain-gut axis. The interaction is mainly afferent. These afferent pathways include centers that are involved in the central nervous processing of emotions as the mid/posterior insula and the anterior cingulate cortex. A previous study revealed altered processing of emotions in children with fecal incontinence. The present study replicates these results. METHODS: In order to analyze the processing of emotions, we compared …

Mechanisms of Disease: the role of nerve growth factor in the pathophysiology of bladder disorders.

The case is compelling for the involvement of nerve growth factor (NGF) in the pathogenesis of lower urinary tract disease, especially in conditions with altered neural function. Remodeling of the micturition pathways occurs following experimental bladder-outlet obstruction, denervation, spinal cord injury, cystitis, and diabetes mellitus. Clinically, NGF levels are elevated in the bladders of men with benign prostatic hyperplasia, women with interstitial cystitis and in patients with idiopathic overactive bladder. Blockade of NGF, using either an endogenous antibody or an antibody against the

TRPV1 and the gut: from a tasty receptor for a painful vanilloid to a key player in hyperalgesia.

Capsaicin, the pungent ingredient in red pepper, has been used since ancient times as a spice, despite the burning sensation associated with its intake. More than 50 years ago, Nikolaus Jancso discovered that capsaicin can selectively stimulate nociceptive primary afferent neurons. The ensuing research established that the neuropharmacological properties of capsaicin are due to its activation of the transient receptor potential ion channel of the vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1). Expressed by primary afferent neurons innervating the gut and other organs, TRPV1 is gated not only by vanilloids such as c

Is demyelination a feature of maple syrup urine disease?

To determine whether disturbance of myelination is a pathophysiologic feature in patients with treated maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), neurophysiologic studies were performed in 10 MSUD patients ages 4-16 years. Afferent and efferent pathways were studied by visual evoked potentials, somatosensory evoked potentials, motor evoked potentials, stance-stabilizing reflexes, and peripheral nerve conduction velocity. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to detect possible cerebral white matter abnormalities. Visual evoked potentials were normal in all patients. There was only slight prolongation of

Characterization of nociceptin/orphanin FQ-induced pain responses in conscious mice: neonatal capsaicin treatment and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor GluRepsilon subunit knockout mice.

Activation of primary afferent C fibers gives rise to spinal release of substance P and glutamate, and these mediators facilitate the cascade of nociceptive processing. We recently showed that intrathecal administration of nociceptin or orphanin FQ (hereafter called nociceptin) induced hyperalgesia to noxious thermal stimuli and allodynia to innocuous tactile stimuli applied to conscious mice. In the present study, we designed experiments to elucidate the pathways and mediators of nociceptin-evoked pain responses. Neonatal capsaicin treatment eliminated the induction of hyperalgesia and allody

Olfactory marker protein mRNA is found in axons of olfactory receptor neurons.

The separation between the cell bodies of olfactory receptor neurons in the nasal cavity and their axon terminals in the olfactory bulb make them attractive for studying axonal transport. Although high molecular weight RNAs are generally believed to be excluded from axons of mature neurons, we demonstrate here that mRNA for olfactory marker protein (OMP), an abundant cytoplasmic protein selectively expressed in mature receptor cells, is present in rodent olfactory receptor axons. OMP RNA was detected by in situ hybridization at the light microscope level in axons and in terminals. By nuclease

Anekomochi glutinous rice provides low postprandial glycemic response by enhanced insulin action via GLP-1 release and vagal afferents activation.

Glutinous rice (mochi rice), compared to non-glutinous rice (uruchi rice), exhibits a wide range of glycemic index (GI) values, from low to high. However, the underlying mechanisms behind the variation in GI values remain poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to identify rice cultivars with a low postprandial glycemic response and investigate the mechanisms, focusing on insulin and incretin hormones. We examined seven glutinous rice cultivars and three non-glutinous rice cultivars. We discovered that Anekomochi, a glutinous rice cultivar, has the lowest postprandial glycemic response. Ane

Afferent Visual Manifestations of Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes structural and functional damage to the central nervous system including the visual pathway. Defects in the afferent visual pathways affect visual function and in severe cases cause complete visual loss. Visual dysfunction is detectable by structural and functional ophthalmic examinations that are routine in the eye clinic, including examination of the pupillary light reflex and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Assessment of pupillary light reflex is a non-invasive assessment combining afferent and efferent visual function. While a assessment using a flas

Review article: Helicobacter pylori, mucosal inflammation and symptom perception--new insights into an old hypothesis.

The role of Helicobacter pylori and the accompanying mucosal inflammatory response in functional dyspepsia is still undefined. Human and animal studies have clearly demonstrated a link between intestinal mucosal inflammation and changes in sensory-motor function. Growing clinical and basic evidence supports the concept that a similar paradigm may occur in H. pylori-related dyspepsia. The infection may both induce gastric dysmotility and trigger neuroplastic changes in the afferent neural pathways leading to visceral hyperalgesia. A reduction of central antinociceptive control systems may also

Neuro-ophthalmologic diagnosis and therapy of central nervous system trauma.

Careful examination and judicious use of neuroimaging will lead to the initiation of appropriate management for injuries of the afferent and efferent visual systems. This article concentrates on those aspects of neuro-ophthalmologic trauma that are most relevant to the neurosurgeon, particularly those disorders that are commonly faced when caring for acutely injured patients. Although direct injury to the orbit and globes can easily result in neuro-ophthalmologic disorders, it is less appreciated that distant head injury can similarly result in injury to the retrobulbar afferent visual pathway

Saccadic latency as a measure of afferent visual conduction.

Latency to initiate a saccadic eye movement to a visual target, and visual evoked potential, were measured in seven patients with resolved unilateral optic neuritis. Saccades were delayed when the target was presented to the clinically involved eye, but were normal when the contralateral eye was tested. With binocular target presentation, saccades were symmetric between eyes and normal in latency. In two patients with pituitary adenoma and low-grade bitemporal field defects, saccades were delayed when targets were presented in the temporal field, but were within normal limits when presented in

Intravascular mechanoreceptor modulation of renal sympathetic nerve activity in the cat.

Experiments were performed in chloralose-anesthetized cats to characterize intravascular mechanoreceptro input to renal nerve activity in th … phrine, volume expansion, or veratrine administration. These experiments demonstrate that the major afferent pathways for renal sympathetic circulatory reflexes are confined to the carotid sinus and aortic and vagus nerves. No evidence was found for a significant contribution from sympathetic afferent nerves.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the visual pathways in human albinos.

Neuroanatomical and electrophysiological studies of albino visual pathways have demonstrated that retinogeniculate axons arising from the temporal retina decussate abnormally in the optic chiasm to synapse in the contralateral lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). Anomalies in the LGN secondarily disrupt normal geniculo-cortical and interhemispheric cortico-cortical (callosal) visual connections. It is not known whether retinogeniculate misrouting affects the size or configuration of the afferent visual pathways in human albinos. We used T1-weighted coronal and sagittal magnetic resonance imaging
