Green-synthesized silver-alginate-ciprofloxacin hydrogel: A multifaceted therapeutic for enhanced diabetic and burn Wound healing.

Wound healing is a complex physiological process involving coordinated phases of inflammation, tissue repair, and scar formation to restore tissue integrity. Recently, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been investigated for their potential to promote wound healing; however, their application is limited by concerns over cytotoxicity and the development of bacterial resistance. To address these limitations, this study presents the development of a silver-alginate hydrogel (AgSACip) incorporating ciprofloxacin, synthesized using green tea extract act as a biogenic reducing and stabilizing agent.

A Synthetic Hydrogel with Tunable Stiffness for Engineering Pancreatic Cancer Organoids and Drug Testing.

Pancreatic cancer organoids (PCOs) have gained extensive attention as promising in vitro models that can advance our understanding of translational cancer biology and biomedical research. To date, PCOs are mostly cultured in animal-derived matrices, which are limited by their low similarity with native tumors due to batch-to-batch variations, stringent operating conditions, and uncontrollable physicochemical properties. Here, we developed a more controllable hydrogel matrix comprising sodium alginate (NaA) and hyaluronic acid (HA) that can mimic the mechanical properties of native tumor tissue

Biomimetic Anisotropic Polyvinyl Alcohol/Sodium Alginate/MXene Aerogel for Efficient Uremic Toxin Adsorption in Hemoperfusion.

The accumulation of uremic toxins, which ultimately leads to renal failure, results in systemic complications and necessitates efficient and biocompatible removal strategies. This paper presents the preparation of a biomimetic anisotropic aerogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), and MXenes (Ti3C2TX) via directional freezing. Inspired by plant vascular bundles, the resulting vertically aligned porous structure enhances the mechanical stability of and mass transfer in the material. The aerogel with its high MXene loading and high surface utilization offers remarkable ad

Enhancing therapeutic effects alginate microencapsulation of thyme and calendula oils using ionic gelation for controlled drug delivery.

This study focuses on encapsulating and characterizing essential oils such as thyme and calendula oils, which are known for their therapeutic properties but are limited in pharmaceutical formulations due to their low water solubility and instability, with alginate microspheres. Alginate presents an excellent option for microencapsulation due to its biocompatibility and biological degradability. The ionic gelation (IG) technique, based on the ionic binding between alginate and divalent cations, allows the formation of hydrogel materials with high water content, mechanical strength, and biocompa

Probing insulin bioactivity in oral nanoparticles produced by ultrasonication-assisted emulsification/internal gelation.

Alginate-dextran sulfate-based particles obtained by emulsification/internal gelation technology can be considered suitable carriers for oral insulin delivery. A rational study focused on the emulsification and particle recovery steps was developed in order to reduce particles to the nanosize range while keeping insulin bioactivity. There was a decrease in size when ultrasonication was used during emulsification, which was more pronounced when a cosurfactant was added. Ultrasonication add-on after particle recovery decreased aggregation and led to a narrower nanoscale particle-size distributio

Studies of craniofacial development in rotating bioreactors.

Several studies in our laboratory assessed the effect of 3-D culture in various rotating bioreactors on craniofacial development. Initially, mouse first branchial arches were cultured. Molar and incisor development occurred in both upper and lower jaws, but maxilla development was deficient because no brain was present. In a second study using excised whole heads, the oral epithelia fused and teeth did not develop. External structure of the face was obliterated, although internally, eye development was excellent. To preserve both internal spaces and external face structure, subsequent experime

Unusual donor site reactions to calcium alginate dressings.

Calcium alginate dressings have been used as the standard dressing for split skin donor sites at the Women's and Children's Hospital burn unit for the last 12 yr. This method has proven satisfactory with good haemostasis, reliable healing, low infection rate and is well accepted by the children and nursing staff. We have recently had 5 cases with the unusual and unexplained phenomenon of dermal calcification in the donor site following the use of two new varieties of calcium alginate dressing.

Drought-tolerant Pseudomonas sp. showed differential expression of stress-responsive genes and induced drought tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana.

The growth and persistence of rhizobacteria in soils are highly impacted by moisture stress. In this study, we report the first transcript analysis of four Pseudomonas strains (PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4) isolated from the root-soil interface of rice and maize associated with different moisture levels during water deprivation. Filtered Pseudomonas sp. cells incubated at low (RH10%) and high (RH85%) relative humidity showed decreased survival of all Pseudomonas sp. at RH10% when compared with RH85%. RT-PCR showed differential expression of treS (trehalose synthase), rpoS (sigma factor), mucA (algin

Mucoprotective effect of a galactomannan- and hyaluronic-based medical device in a reconstructed human esophageal epithelium.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common disorder characterized by troublesome symptoms (classically, heartburn and regurgitation). Repeated or prolonged exposure to gastric contents may cause irritation and inflammation of the esophageal mucosa. RefluG™ is a medical device conceived to form a physical barrier on contact with gastric contents, neutralize stomach acid excess, and elicit a mucoprotective effect. The aim of the current study was to investigate the mucoprotective potential of RefluG™ (IHS, Biofarma Group, Lissone, Italy) in a simulated reflux model. METHODS:

Complete biodegradation of di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) by a novel Pseudomonas sp. YJB6.

Phthalate acid esters (PAEs) are environmentally ubiquitous and have aroused a worldwide concern due to their threats to environment and human health. Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) is one of the most frequently observed PAEs in the environment. In this study, a novel bacterium identified as Pseudomonas sp. YJB6 that isolated from PAEs-contaminated soil was determined to have strong DBP-degrading activity. A complete degradation of DBP in 200 mg/L was achieved within 3 days when YJB6 was cultivated at 31.4 °C with an initial inoculation size of 0.6 (OD600) in basic mineral salts liquid medium (MSM

Antibacterial and toxicological evaluation of beta-lactams synthesized by immobilized beta-lactamase-free penicillin amidase produced by Alcaligenes sp.

Search for anti-beta-lactamase and synthesis of newer penicillin were suggested to overcome resistance to penicillin in chemotherapy. It was found that clavulanic acid, an ant-beta-lactamase was ineffective due to its structural modification by bacteria. Thus, there is a need for the synthesis of newer pencillins. Retro-synthesis was inspired by the success of forward reaction i.e.conversion of penicillin G to 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) by biological process. In the present study a better enzymatic method of synthesis of newer pencillin by a beta-lactamase-free penicillin amidase produce

Macrophage-reprogramming calcium alginate microspheres enhance exosome-mediated antigen cross-presentation to boost embolization-immunotherapy in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is a first-line therapeutic modality for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Nevertheless, its therapeutic efficacy remains constrained by the hostile tumor microenvironment (TME), typified by acidity and an immunosuppressive milieu. Here, multifunctional microspheres (RC6CaAlgMS) were developed to neutralize the acidic TME and relieve immunosuppression. The uniform-sized calcium alginate microspheres were fabricated using microfluidic technology, incorporating pH-responsive CaCO3 nanocarriers to efficiently encapsulate R848 and C6-ceramide (C6). Their physic

A pH-responsive hydrogel based on polysaccharides incorporated with honeysuckle-derived exosome-like nanovesicles for the management of infected wound.

The management of infected wounds is a major clinical challenge because the healing process is often obstructed by several related pathological factors, such as drug-resistant microbial infections, persistent inflammatory responses, oxidative stress, and impaired angiogenesis. In this study, we developed an injectable hydrogel (CTOHo) designed using honeysuckle-derived exosome-like nanovesicles (HoNVs) incorporated into a dynamic network created from carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), tannic acid (TA), and oxidised sodium alginate (OSA). HoNVs were isolated from fresh honeysuckle and characterised
