OBJECTIVES: To examine bone formation in dehiscence defects using biphasic hydroxyapatite/β-tricalcium phosphate plus biphasic calcium sulfate (BCP/BCS).
MATERIAL: After extractions, 24 mandibular buccal dehiscence defects (3 × 3 mm) were treated with BCP/BCS (E), membrane (MC), or control (NC). Histology and histomorphometric analysis were performed.
RESULTS: After 6 weeks, bone formation was noticeable in most sites. In subsequent phases, the woven bone was gradually remodeled into lamellar bone and marrow. Vertical new bone height in the E and MC groups (1.06 and 0.85 mm.) was substantial

PURPOSE: The purpose of this report was to describe a surgical technique for performing alveolar distraction in the upper jaw via a palatal approach.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: To illustrate this technique we report 2 clinical cases in which palatal-approach alveolar distraction was used to rectify insufficient alveolar rim height. The first case involves a 50-year-old man with atrophy of the alveolar rim in the posterior upper jaw. From the palatal side, a transport segment pedicled to the vestibular mucosa was cut, and 2 Lead System distractors (Leibinger, Kalamazoo, MI) were placed. The second

The increased use of implants in orthodontics has stimulated interest in augmenting bone in patients who have deficient alveolar ridges that preclude ideal implant placement. A nonsurgical technique for increasing the amount of available bone for implant site development and fixture placement is orthodontic extrusion, or forced eruption. The concept of a tooth moving coronally by orthodontic means and the clinical alterations in the soft tissue architecture of the periodontium demonstrated during orthodontic extrusive movement of periodontally compromised teeth have demonstrated a direct relat

PURPOSE: There is a paucity of studies that have assessed the long-term outcomes of the alveolar ridge split (ARS). This study evaluated the intraoperative and postoperative complications and assessed the placed dental implant and prosthesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of the ARS was conducted in a single private dental clinic. The predictor variable was the ARS technique (1 stage vs 2 stages). The primary outcome was the dental implant survival rate. Secondary outcomes were intraoperative complications, marginal bone loss, prosthetic complications, and prosthesis success ra

This case report presents the surgical and prosthetic treatment of posterior mandibular tooth loss using a digitally guided augmentation technique with an autogenous bone cylinder, referred to as the Digital CarroTrack Technique. The method represents a digital modification of the autogenous bone cylinder harvesting technique (carrot technique) described by Khoury and integrates implant planning with guided bone augmentation. A 33-year-old female patient presented for implant-prosthetic rehabilitation of missing mandibular molars following previous orthodontic treatment. Diagnostic assessment

BACKGROUND: The simultaneous placement of dental implants during sinus augmentation is advocated in cases in which >or=4 to 5 mm of alveolar bone exists coronally to the sinus floor. The aim of the present study was to assess the survival rate of dental implants placed during sinus augmentation and stabilized by the use of cancellous freeze-dried block allograft. Residual alveolar ridge height <or=4 mm was an inclusion criteria.
METHODS: Twenty-eight consecutive patients (13 females and 15 males) aged between 25 and 65 years (mean, 54 +/- 9 years) were referred for implant-supported reconstru

PURPOSE: The degree of difficulty in performing lateral window sinus augmentation may depend on the morphology of the maxillary sinus. The aim of this was to measure the distances between the medial and lateral sinus wall (sinus width [SW]) at different levels and apply those SW values to formulate a new sinus classification.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Edentulous sites adjacent to maxillary sinuses with inadequate ridge height (RH; <10 mm) were included from cone-beam computed tomography database in the University of Michigan. SW was measured at the heights of 5, 7, 10, 13, and 15 mm from alveola

INTRODUCTION: As a consequence of extraction, the height of the buccal wall tends to decrease and results in the disappearance of bundle bone. To modify bone remodelling after extraction, various ridge preservation techniques have been proposed. The present research was drawn up with the following considerations in mind: to evaluate and to compare changes of hard and soft tissues in post-extraction sockets which received a ridge preservation procedure, with post-extraction sockets which had healed naturally.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each patient was randomly allocated to a test or control group

INTRODUCTION: Achieving tension-free flap closure is a critical challenge in vertical ridge augmentation of the anterior maxilla, where anatomical constraints limit flap mobility and soft tissue advancement. This study compares the split-thickness flap (control) and sub-orbicularis full-thickness flap (test) in cadaveric models to evaluate their impact on soft tissue thickness, flap integrity following periosteal release, and mucogingival junction (MGJ) displacement. The goal is to characterize and optimize surgical approaches for vertical bone augmentation in the anterior maxilla.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the viability of free gingival grafts (FGG) and assess clinical and radiographic changes in the alveolar ridge following socket seal surgery with or without freeze-dried bone allograft (FDBA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight anterior and premolar tooth extractions were randomly allocated to 2 groups: socket graft of FDBA sealed with FGG (n = 15) and control with empty sockets sealed solely with FGG (n = 13). Photographs taken at 3, 7, 14, and 30 days post-surgery assessed FGG viability. Alveolar ridge volume was clinically evaluated via intraoral s

The placement of dental implants is based on the amount of alveolar bone present in the edentulous site to be reconstructed. Insufficient alveolar contours may require bone grafting procedures to restore an adequate bone volume before implant placement. Larger osseous defects often require block grafts harvested from the symphysis or the ramus buccal shelf region. These provide adequate donor sites to harvest a graft sufficient to restore a significant defect in the osseous structures planned for implant placements. Autogenous block grafts have been well established to reconstruct these types

BACKGROUND: Anatomic variations of the maxillary sinus determine the degree of difficulty in performing sinus augmentation. Whereas some variations, e.g., the septum and morphology of the sinus, have been extensively studied, the structure of the medial wall has never been investigated. The aims of this study are to measure the location and angulation of the palatonasal recess (PNR) on the medial wall and identify risk sites that are related to the shape of the PNR.
METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were screened from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry database.

Alveolar ridge deficiency is considered a major esthetic limitation, especially in the maxillary anterior region. Several approaches have been developed to enhance and increase the soft-tissue volume. Among those approaches are connective tissue grafts, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membrane and implying the guided bone regeneration concept. The PRF grafting technique was employed in this clinical case to improve and enhance the anterior esthetic without the need for the bone graft and augmentation. This article describes the use of PRF as a sole grafting material for both socket and soft-tissue
