In addition, three new species of Ancylostoma were collected: A. genettae in Genetta genetta, A.

Hookworm infection.

It retards growth and intellectual development in millions of children yet is largely ignored by researchers. New findings suggest excellent possibilities for a vaccine.

Density-dependent regulation of the growth of the hookworms Necator americanus and Ancylostoma ceylanicum.

Laboratory bred DSN hamsters were exposed to varying doses of infective larvae of Ancylostoma ceylanicum (orally) or Necator americanus (percutaneously) and were autopsied at times which corresponded to a period immediately before cessation of growth of worms or soon afterwards. A total of 829 (404 male and 425 female) A. ceylanicum and 1582 (781 male and 801 female) N. americanus were measured. At worm burdens of fewer than 100, the length of A. ceylanicum appeared to increase with infection intensity and no evidence was found that growth was retarded under crowded conditions. In an experimen

[An imported human case of hookworm infection with worms in the rectum].

An imported case of rectal hookworm infection was diagnosed by stool examination and recovery of adult worms from the rectal mucosa by sigmoidoscopy. The chief complaints of a patient were diarrhea, abdominal pain and weight loss for about 1 month after returning from his travel abroad to the Southeast Asia. Leukocytosis(16,750/microliters) and peripheral eosinophilia(33.7%) were noticed without anemia. Typical hookworm eggs were detected by stool examination, and 3 worms were collected by sigmoidoscopy from rectal mucosa of this patient. Those worms were confirmed as adult worms of Ancylostom

[A case report of a patient repeatedly infected with Ancylostoma duodenale, probably from himself through his artificial anus, and resistant against a single dose of pyrantel pamoate].

A 88 year old Japanese male was repeatedly infected with Ancyclostoma duodenale. He underwent an artificial anus operation about 55 years ago. He appeared to be infected with hookworm earlier than in 1977 and developed severe anemia. Though he was treated with pyrantel pamoate and mebendazole several times, reinfections developed in each time. A possible origin for his reinfections was his own feces defecated through his artificial anus. Unsanitary handling of the anus and the feces exposed himself to oral or percutaneous infection. Besides, a single dose of pyrantel pamoate, usually very effe

Transmission of Ancylostoma caninum and Alaria marcianae in coyotes (Canis latrans).

One of seven female coyotes (Canis latrans) captured in Webb County, Texas during September 1986 and confined and mated in holding facilities at Millville, Utah whelped the following spring. The maternal female (greater than 5-yr-old) and her five neonates were killed at 22 days postparturition. All were infected with adult Ancylostoma caninum and were passing eggs in their feces. Also, the neonates and maternal female were infected with immature and adult Alaria marcianae, respectively. These findings suggested that the transmammary route is an important transmission mechanism for acquisition

Efficacy of UV-irradiated larval vaccine of Ancylostoma ceylanicum (Looss, 1911) in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

A vaccination trial in golden hamsters with UV-irradiated infective larvae of Ancylostoma ceylanicum was attempted. One oral vaccination of hamsters with 100 infective larvae irradiated by means of UV-tube (390 nm) at different time intervals induced the development of resistance. As the time exposure of irradiation was increased, there was a corresponding decrease in the subsequent worm establishment. A high level of protection afforded by larvae irradiated for 15 min UV-exposure was recorded giving 99.0% and 95.0% worm reduction against the challenge doses of 100 and 1000 normal larvae respe

Host immune response against homologous challenge infection of Ancylostoma caninum larvae after application of effective anthelmintics.

The development of immunity against Ancylostoma caninum larval reinfection has been investigated in mice after the primary infection has been treated with an effective anthelmintics. Experimentally A, caninum larvae infected mice treated with levamisole (5 x 40 mg/kg), thiabendazole (5 x 200 mg/kg), oxfendazole (5 x 100 mg/kg), or albendazole (5 x 100 mg/kg) when challenged with A. caninum larvae showed 47.77 to 55.81% larval reduction from the challenge dose indicating thereby the development of partial immunity.

Anthelmintic activity of closantel against Ancylostoma caninum in dogs.

The efficacy and minimum therapeutic dose of closantel, an injectable salicylanilide anthelmintic, was evaluated on adult Ancylostoma caninum. Doses of 7.5 and 10 mg/kg had a marked anthelmintic effect on adult stages, removing 99 and 98%, respectively. A second experiment tested the efficacy of closantel against hypobiotic larval stages of A. caninum. A dose of 20 mg/kg did not affect the abundance of arrested hookworm larvae or prevent their subsequent development, but it may have inhibited their full maturation as adult worms so that patent, intestinal infections did not occur. Small number

Experimental infection of chickens with Ancylostoma caninum: migration and distribution of larvae in tissues.

Two hundred one-day-old male white leghorn chickens (Gallus domesticus) divided into 4 groups were inoculated with a single dose of 500, 1000, 2000 or 4000 filariform larvae of Ancylostoma caninum. Larval recoveries were made from different tissues at intervals from 4 hours to 72 hours after infection. Larval migration in the heart took place within 4 hours in all the groups except group A with 500 larvae and in thoracic muscle at 8 hours. Larvae also migrated into liver, lungs and neck muscle within 12 hours and into leg muscle at 18 hours. No larvae were recovered from the muscles after 72 h
