In silico mapping of microbial communities and stress responses in a porcine slaughterhouse and pork products through its production chain, and the efficacy of HLE disinfectant.

The use of shotgun metagenomic sequencing to understand ecological-level spread of microbes and their genes has provided new insights for the prevention, surveillance and control of microbial contaminants in the slaughterhouse environment. Here, microbial samples were collected from products and surrounding areas though a porcine slaughter process; shotgun metagenomic DNA-sequencing of these samples revealed a high community diversity within the porcine slaughterhouse and pork products, in zones originating from animal arrival through to the sale zones. Bacteria were more prevalent in the firs

Escherichia coli isolates from broiler chicken meat, broiler chickens, pork, and pigs share phylogroups and antimicrobial resistance with community-dwelling humans and patients with urinary tract infection.

Escherichia coli is the most common cause of urinary tract infection (UTI). Phylogroup B2 and D isolates are associated with UTI. It has been proposed that E. coli causing UTI could have an animal origin. The objective of this study was to investigate the phylogroups and antimicrobial resistance, and their possible associations in E. coli isolates from patients with UTI, community-dwelling humans, broiler chicken meat, broiler chickens, pork, and pigs in Denmark. A total of 964 geographically and temporally matched E. coli isolates from UTI patients (n = 102), community-dwelling humans (n = 10

Regulation of Social Recognition Memory in the Hippocampal Circuits.

Social recognition memory reflects the ability of the social animals to recognize and remember familiar individuals of the same species. The unique ability for mammals to recognize conspecifics is essential and beneficial when animals conduct daily social activities. This brief review summarizes a brain network underlying social recognition memory and explores the possible relationships between social isolation and social recognition memory. Finally, we introduce some possible related molecular mechanisms underlying social recognition memory. These findings help us explore potential targeting

Antidotes against venomous animals: state of the art and prospectives.

This communication revises the state of the art concerning antivenoms against snakes, spiders and scorpions. An overview of the historical facts that preceded the therapeutic use of antibodies is mentioned. A brief list of the major protein components of these venomous animals is revised with a short discussion of what is known on the proteomic analysis of their venoms, but the emphasis is placed on the type of antivenoms available commercially, including pertinent literature and addresses of the companies that prepare these antivenoms. The final section revises and discusses current research

Longitudinal Profiling of the Macaque Vaginal Microbiome Reveals Similarities to Diverse Human Vaginal Communities.

The vaginal microbiota plays an important role in women's reproductive and urogenital health. It is now well accepted that a "Работает" vaginal microbiome is dominated by Lactobacillus species. Disturbances in this microbial community can lead to several adverse outcomes, including pelvic inflammatory disease and bacterial vaginosis (BV), as well as increased susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections, miscarriage, and preterm births. However, vaginal communities, especially those of women in the developing world, can be comprised of a diverse set of microorganisms in the absence of over

Acoustic signals of Chinese alligators (Alligator sinensis): social communication.

This paper reports the first systematic study of acoustic signals during social interactions of the Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis). Sound pressure level (SPL) measurements revealed that Chinese alligators have an elaborate acoustic communication system with both long-distance signal-bellowing-and short-distance signals that include tooting, bubble blowing, hissing, mooing, head slapping and whining. Bellows have high SPL and appear to play an important role in the alligator's long range intercommunion. Sounds characterized by low SPL are short-distance signals used when alligators are

Chlamydia caviae Causing Community-Acquired Pneumonia: An Emerging Zoonosis.

We describe a case of community-acquired pneumonia due to Chlamydia caviae in a patient with no direct animal exposure, raising questions about the zoonotic reservoirs and potential transmission routes. Genotyping of Chamydia isolates that cause pneumonia should be performed for a precise diagnosis and to initiate adequate infection control measures.

Enhancing community awareness of antimicrobial use and resistance through community conversations in rural Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced availability of veterinary drugs in Ethiopia has led to a growing use of these drugs in food-producing animals. However, the use of drugs in livestock is not commonly supervised by trained veterinarians. In addition, smallholder livestock producers often lack sufficient education and information about antimicrobial use to achieve the intended impact. METHODS: We used Community Conversations to raise awareness and knowledge about antimicrobial use and resistance within rural communities. We used single-sex and mixed-gender discussion groups to explore community members' pe

Zoonotic disease knowledge, attitudes, and livestock biosecurity practices among community members in Ada East District, Ghana: a concurrent mixed-methods study.

Zoonotic diseases disproportionately burden settings where humans and livestock coexist, yet community-level knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) remain poorly characterized in West Africa. This study aimed to assess KAP regarding zoonotic diseases and document household biosecurity gaps among livestock-keeping community members in Ada East Distrct in Ghana. A concurrent mixed-methods design was employed, integrating a quantitative cross-sectional survey with a qualitative focus group discussion. Livestock-keeping adults were recruited from five health facilities in Ada East District. A s

Epidemiological Profile and Awareness Regarding Animal Bite Management in an Urban Area.

OBJECTIVES: The most common way for people to contract the deadly zoonotic disease rabies is through animal bites. This study was designed because there is a shortage of community-based data to determine the true extent of rabies infection and a lack of understanding regarding patient misconceptions in urban areas. The objective was to determine the scope of the issue and the epidemiological features of animal bite incidents. METHODOLOGY: This was a facility-based cross-sectional study conducted at the field practice area (Urban Health Training Centre) under the Department of Community Medici

New variability in cerebrovascular anatomy determines severity of hippocampal injury following forebrain ischemia in the Mongolian gerbil.

Transient bilateral carotid artery occlusion in the Mongolian gerbil is a widely used model of forebrain ischemia due to species-specific absence of communicating arteries between the middle and posterior cerebral arteries. We have found that transient carotid occlusion induces a wide variation in histological injury of the hippocampus, suggesting that Mongolian gerbils currently available in the US have anomalous connections between the vertebral and carotid circulations. We subjected Mongolian gerbils from Harlan Sprague-Dawley and Charles River Laboratories to 5 min of bilateral carotid occ

Smart plants: memory and communication without brains.

The immobility of plants is consistent with their principal function: collecting light to provide photosynthetic substrate for the biological system. Their immobility does impose limitations on some basic requirements, such as the need for pollination, for seed dispersal, and for protection against herbivores. Meeting these 3 needs will logically necessitate some ability for plant communication - at least a capability for beneficial adaptive behavior. Three types of plant behavior provide evidence of memory and communication abilities: a capability for memory, a capability for measuring time,

Correlation between environmental monitoring of thermophilic campylobacters in sewage effluent and the incidence of Campylobacter infection in the community.

Environmental monitoring of thermophilic campylobacters in liquid sewage effluent (primary settlement only) during 1988 and 1989 showed a prominent seasonality with distinct peaks in May and June (the average number of bacteria per 100 ml of effluent in months other than May and June was 2244 and the average for the peak months was 50,778). Apart from September 1989, this seasonality coincided precisely with the seasonal variation of campylobacter enteritis in the community with similar distinct peaks in May and June (the incidence of infection in May and June was twice or three times that in

Signatures of branched-chain fatty acids derived from a kidney reservoir confer stable chemical individuality on domestic cats.

Animals often rely on scent marks to communicate identity across time, yet how chemically dynamic signals remain individually informative is unresolved. Here, we show that domestic cats achieve durable chemical individuality through a reservoir-buffered system based on branched-chain fatty acids (BFAs). Using behavior-guided chemistry, we identify a structurally unusual repertoire of urinary BFAs whose compositional profiles are individually distinctive, stable within individuals, and relatively resistant to post-deposition drift. Cats discriminate donor-derived BFA compositions even when pres

Heart development and regeneration-a multi-organ effort.

Development of the heart, from early morphogenesis to functional maturation, as well as maintenance of its homeostasis are tasks requiring collaborative efforts of cardiac tissue and different extra-cardiac organ systems. The brain, lymphoid organs, and gut are among the interaction partners that can communicate with the heart through a wide array of paracrine signals acting at local or systemic level. Disturbance of cardiac homeostasis following ischemic injury also needs immediate response from these distant organs. Our hearts replace dead muscles with non-contractile fibrotic scars. We have

Use of waggle dance information in honey bees is linked to gene expression in the antennae, but not in the brain.

Communication is essential for social animals, but deciding how to utilize information provided by conspecifics is a complex process that depends on environmental and intrinsic factors. Honey bees use a unique form of communication, the waggle dance, to inform nestmates about the location of food sources. However, as in many other animals, experienced individuals often ignore this social information and prefer to rely on prior experiences, i.e., private information. The neurosensory factors that drive the decision to use social information are not yet understood. Here we test whether the decis

Head Louse Feces: Chemical Analysis and Behavioral Activity.

Human head lice Pediculus humanus capitis (De Geer) (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) are insect parasites closely associated with humans, feeding on the blood of their hosts and causing them skin irritation and probable secondary infections. Despite being a severe nuisance, very few studies have reported on intraspecific chemical communication in head lice. Here, we evaluated the attractive response of head lice to the volatile compounds and solvent extracts from their feces. We also chemically analyzed the main volatile components of these feces and those of the feces' extracts. Head lice were att
